Geometric Integration Theory

This textbook introduces geometric measure theory through the notion of currents. Currents—continuous linear functionals on spaces of differential forms—are a natural language in which to formulate various types of extremal problems arising in geometry, and can be used to study generalized versions of the Plateau problem and related questions in geometric analysis. Key features of Geometric Integration Theory: * Includes topics on the deformation theorem, the area and coarea formulas, the compactness theorem, the slicing theorem and applications to minimal surfaces * Applies techniques to complex geometry, partial differential equations, harmonic analysis, differential geometry, and many other parts of mathematics

Foundations of landscape architecture : Integrating form and space using the language of site design

Illustrates the importance of spatial language. It introduces concepts, typologies, and rudimentary principles of form and space. Including designs for projects such as parks, campuses, and memorials, this text provides the core concepts necessary for designers to shape functional landscapes. Additionally, chapters discuss organizational and spatial design structures based on orthogonal forms, angular forms, and circular forms.

Extreme Conflict and Tropical Forests

At a time when the international community is devoting significant attention to the issue of governance as a key factor in global environmental decline, this book provides a timely insight into the relationships between extreme conflict, the international trade in forest products, and the social, economic and environmental condition of tropical forests and their human communities. Drawing on the expertise of both natural and social scientists, Extreme Conflict and Tropical Forests explores the underlying causes and the social and environmental consequences of conflict in tropical forest areas. Case studies from Africa, Asia and Latin America present a range of issues – from illicit crops and ‘conflict timber’ production, to the potential of peace parks for improving human security, social quality and biodiversity conservation.

Digital Design of Nature : Computer Generated Plants and Organics

The reproduction of nature via computer has fascinated scientists in computer graphics and artists ever since synthetic imaging was thought possible. This book illustrates and exemplifies methods for the creation of artificial plant models, and the application of these methods within areas such as simulation, virtual reality, botany, landscaping, and architecture. The models are combined to create gardens, parks, and even entire landscapes. The range of creating representational forms reaches from deceptively authentic looking pictures to abstract presentations. In addition, with similar methods organic objects can be produced, changed, and animated.

Dense + Green : Innovative building types for sustainable urban architecture

Explores new architectural typologies that emerge from the integration of green components such as sky terraces, vertical parks and green facades, in high-density buildings. In-depth case studies on the most relevant building types are complemented by expert essays that demonstrate the current paradigm shift in the sustainable urban environment.

CyberParks – The Interface Between People, Places and Technology: New Approaches and Perspectives

This book is about public open spaces, about people, and about the relationship between them and the role of technology in this relationship. It is about different approaches, methods, empirical studies, and concerns about a phenomenon that is increasingly being in the centre of sciences and strategies – the penetration of digital technologies in the urban space. As the main outcome of the CyberParks Project, this book aims at fostering the understanding about the current and future interactions of the nexus people, public spaces and technology. It addresses a wide range of challenges and multidisciplinary perspectives on emerging phenomena related to the penetration of technology in people’s lifestyles - affecting therefore the whole society, and with this, the production and use of public spaces. Cyberparks coined the term cyberpark to describe the mediated public space, that emerging type of urban spaces where nature and cybertechnologies blend together to generate hybrid experiences and enhance quality of life.

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Environmental Goods by Applying Contingent Valuation Method : Some Japanese Case Studies

Contingent valuation is one of the means of incorporating socio-environmental considerations in cost–benefit analysis. The authors of this book have examined environmental valuation methods through the lens of cost–benefit analysis focused on three case studies in Japan: public parks, a bay wetland, and a recreational theme park. With implications for the world at large, the findings presented here serve as a valuable source of information on Japanese behavior regarding the valuation of environmental goods. New, alternative approaches and guidelines for cost–benefit analysis in the public and private spheres also are discussed. This volume makes an important addition to the library of all researchers and other scientists in the fields of environmental science and environmental economics.

Airport Building Information Modelling

Details how Building Information Modelling is being successfully deployed in the planning, design, construction and future operation of the Istanbul New Airport, a mega-scale construction project incorporating a varying mix of infrastructures including terminals, runways, passenger gates, car parks, railways and roads. The book demonstrates how Airport Building Information Modelling (ABIM) is being used to: • facilitate collaboration, cooperation and integrated project delivery • manage subcontractors and eliminate cost over-runs • reduce waste on site and enhance overall quality • connect people in a virtual environment to encourage collaborative working • provide clients with an effective interface for lifecycle management including: design development, construction documentation, construction phases and BIM and Big Data Integration for future facilities management
