Olfactory knows the truth
Olfaction, the sense of smell detects and discriminate odors as well as social cues which influence our innate responses. The olfactory system in human beings is found to be weak as compared to other animals; however, it seems to be very precise. It can detect and discriminate millions of chemical moieties (odorants) even in minuscule quantities. The sense of smell is greatly underappreciated, despite the fact that it monitors the intake of airborne agents into the human respiratory system and determine to a large degree the flavor and palatability of foods and beverage. In addition to enhancing quality of life, this primary sensory system warns of spoiled foods, leaking natural gas, polluted air and smoke, and mediates basic elements of communication (e.g., mother-infant interaction). It is now apparent that smell dysfunction is among the first clinical signs of such neurodegenerative diseases as Alzheimer’s disease and sporadic Parkinson’s disease.
New Perspectives on Aloe
The contents include a brief introduction of aloe, isolation, purification, and structural analysis of components, and various physiological effects of those components for possible use as health foods or drugs. Various functions identified were wound healing, angiogenesis, anti-allergy, skin whitening, stimulation of cell proliferation such as liver or kidney, protection against nephrotoxicity, and immune modulation. Moreover, we suggest standardization and quality control procedures for manufacturing raw aloe, and how to develop related products for successful application of aloe. This is important in Korea because last year the Korean government listed aloe as a health food for which the government establishes regulatory laws. Therefore, many scientists in Korea who are interested in studying health foods would be interested in this kind of text. Other major fields related to this kind of research will be medicine, biology, pharmaceutics, natural products and analytics.

Over the years, PATMOS has evolved into an important European event, where - searchers from both industry and academia discuss and investigate the emerging ch- lenges in future and contemporary applications, design methodologies, and tools - quired for the developmentof upcominggenerationsof integrated circuits and systems. The technical program of PATMOS 2005 contained state-of-the-art technical contri- tions, three invited talks, a special session on hearing-aid design, and an embedded - torial. The technical program focused on timing, performance and power consumption, as well as architectural aspects with particular emphasis on modeling, design, char- terization, analysis and optimization in the nanometer era. The Technical Program Committee, with the assistance of additional expert revi- ers, selected the 74 papers to be presented at PATMOS. The papers were divided into 11 technical sessions and 3 poster sessions. As is always the case with the PATMOS workshops, the review process was anonymous, full papers were required, and several reviews were carried out per paper. Beyond the presentations of the papers, the PATMOS technical program was - riched by a series of speeches offered by world class experts, on important emerging research issues of industrial relevance. Innovation Capacity and the City : The Enabling Role of Design
This book represents one of the key milestones of DESIGNSCAPES: value creation through design-enabled innovation”. The book demonstrates that adopting design allows us to embed innovation within the city so as to arrive at feasible answers to complex global challenges. In this way, innovation can become disruptive, while also sparking a dynamic of gradual change in the “urbanscape” it acts within. To explore this potential, the book puts forward the concept of “design enabled innovation in urban environments” and examines the part that the city can play in promoting and facilitating the adoption of design among public and private sector innovators. This leads to a potential evaluation framework in which a given urbanscape is assessed both in terms of its capacity for generating innovation, and of the nature (more or less design-dependent or design-prone) of the innovative initiatives it hosts. This thread of reasoning holds many promising implications, including a possible “third way” between those who dream of an alternative economic model where revenues and growth are sacrificed on the altar of social and environmental respect, and the supporters of the traditional market-based view, who feel it is enough to add a touch of responsibility and concern to a system that should continue rewarding the profitability of innovations.
