Multiple Stressors : A Challenge for the Future

This book publishes the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Multipollution Exposure and Risk Assessment, Ecotoxiclogical risk from multiple stressors covers any situation where org- isms are exposed to a combination of environmental stressors. These include physical and chemical pollutants as well as other stressors such as parasites and environmental impact (e. g. , climate change or habitat loss). The combi- tion of stressors can result in increased risk to organisms (either additive or synergistic effects) or decreased effects (protective or antagonistic effects). The multiple stressor challenge is an international, multi-disciplinary problem requiring an international, multi-disciplinary approach. The c- rent approach to multiple stressors is to examine one stressor at a time and assume additivity.

Mechanisms of mineralization of vertebrate skeletal and dental tissues

Presents a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding mechanisms regulating the formation of mineral in vertebrate skeletal and dental tissues. The focus of the book is directed toward the mineralization process, an evolutionarily conserved system in which cells synthesize a complex and unique extracellular matrix into which mineral is deposited. Regulatory control is viewed though lenses that emphasize the genetic, physical-chemical, biochemical, structural, cellular and extracellular aspects of the mineralization process as they relate to crystal nucleation, growth and maturation. Throughout the book, defects in regulation at the genetic and transcriptional levels are linked to the numerous clinical problems associated with the mineralization of bone, cartilage, tendon, tooth, and soft tissues.

How does the Galaxy Work? : A Galactic Tertulia with Don Cox and Ron Reynolds

Presents a multi-disciplinary approach to the physical mechanisms which structure the shape, evolution and fate of the Galaxy. It contains 4 panel sessions (the recording transcripts of the galactic 'tertulias'), an introductory historical overview on the Galaxy research, 17 reviews, and the proceedings of more than 50 oral and poster contributions. This book is not a new edition of a previous volume but it is in some way related to the book "The Formation of the Milky Way" (1995; Cambridge University Press), which contains the proceedings of the first IAA-IAC-University of Pisa meeting, held in Granada ten years ago, on the formation of the Milky Way, (see Shore's introduction). Where many other books focus their attention on singular galactic components or specific driving forces, this title provides a wide overview on the gaseous and stellar components and on the physical mechanisms which maintain the dynamical equilibrium of such a complex system as the Galaxy. The book, intended for graduate students and researchers, provides a valuable overview on the different physical mechanisms which drive the galactic gas-stars feedback.

Formulation of Appropriate Laws : A New Integrated Multidisciplinary Approach and an Application to Electronic Funds Transfer Regulation

This book presents such an approach using the Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) regulation in Australia as its vehicle of analysis. The two-pronged approach offered in this book can be applied to formulate efficient laws that maximise the social welfare of the country, irrespective of social, political and economic organisations of the country under study. As such, this book makes several distinct contributions to the literature in law as it: . develops a new integrated multi-disciplinary approach using quantitative methods to formulate appropriate laws; . applies recent developments in welfare economics.

Cadmium toxicity : challenges and solutions

Offers a comprehensive collection of review and case chapters that cover cadmium toxicity and remediation. It covers sources of cadmium contamination, its impact on human health, and prospective remediation strategies, taking a multi-disciplinary approach a focus on application of recent advanced biological technology. The chapters here bring together a diverse group of environmental science, sustainability and health researchers to address the challenges caused by cadmium contamination, explaining the routes of exposure to environmental cadmium, how cadmium is transported in ecosystems, and the health risks linked to cadmium exposure in food and the environment.

Ambient intelligence : A novel paradigm

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is an integrating technology for supporting a pervasive and transparent infrastructure for implementing smart environments. Such technology is used to enable environments for detecting events and behaviors of people and for responding in a contextually relevant fashion. AmI proposes a multi-disciplinary approach for enhancing human machine interaction. The authors start with a description of the iDorm as an example of a smart environment conforming to the AmI paradigm, and introduces computer vision as an important component of the system. Other computer vision examples describe visual monitoring for the elderly, classic and novel surveillance techniques using clusters of cameras installed in indoor and outdoor application domains, and the monitoring of public spaces. Face and speech recognition systems are also covered as well as enhanced LEGO blocks for novel educational purposes. The book closes with a provocative chapter on how a cybernetic system can be designed as the backbone of a human machine interaction.
