Medical Technologies in Neurosurgery

The tremendous progress evolving in medical technologies in recent years increasingly influences our daily neurological practice. Ethical aspects in the application of technologies from differing viewpoints are discussed in detail. Additionally, typical examples for the application of medical technologies in the operating room include image processing, robotic devices, and intraoperative imaging are clearly presented.

Interventional Radiology in Pain Treatment

Disease whether it is acute, chronic, or at end stage, is all too regularly accompanied by pain. Pain is often difficult to control, in malignant disease in particular, even by using appropriate medications. Anesthesiologists and pain therapists have developed new invasive therapies including nerve block, sympatholysis, and neurolysis useful for both diagnosis and pain management. To insure the efficiency and safety of these procedures, and furthermore for elaborate techniques such as vertebroplasty, cementoplasty, and radio frequency bone ablation, imaging guidance becomes mandatory. This state-of-the-art book describes the techniques elaborated by interventional radiologists in the treatment and palliation of a variety of benign and malignant painful conditions.

Imaging of the liver and Intra-hepatic biliary tract ; Vol.1 : Imaging techniques and non-tumoral pathologies

This is the first of two volumes that together provide a comprehensive analysis of the embryology, normal anatomy, and pathology of the liver and intrahepatic biliary tract as seen on modern diagnostic imaging techniques. In this volume, readers will find fundamental information on embryology, radiological anatomy, and anatomic variants. A thorough introduction is then provided to each imaging technique, including ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine techniques, angiography, and interventional radiology. The remainder of the volume is devoted to non-tumoral pathology of the liver and intra-hepatic biliary tract

Gastrointestinal malignancies

Details the advances in drug discovery and delivery and the present need for emerging technologies. Throughout the text new micro and nanofabrication techniques are described, including methods such as electrohydrodynamic processes, additive manufacturing, and microfluidics, which have the potential to produce drug delivery systems that were not possible a few years ago. This book is of great use to both entry-level and experienced researchers in the field of emerging technologies for the manufacturing of drug delivery devices.

Focal liver lesions : Detection, characterization, ablation

Few fields of medicine have witnessed such impressive progress as the diagnosis and treatment of liver tumors. Advances in imaging technology, the development of novel contrast agents, and the introduction of optimized scanning protocols have greatly facilitated the non-invasive detection and characterization of focal liver lesions. Furthermore, image-guided techniques for percutaneous tumor ablation have become an accepted alternative treatment for patients with inoperable liver cancer. This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the role of diagnostic and interventional radiology in respect of liver tumors. The volume moves from background sections on methodology and segmental liver anatomy to the main sections on the diagnosis of benign and malignant liver lesions. An integrated approach, focused on the correlation of ultrasound, CT, and MR imaging findings, is presented. Finally, a full section describes the principles, methods, and results of percutaneous tumor ablation techniques.

Management of Heart Failure ; Vol.1 : Medical

This practical volume focuses on the medical management of heart failure and outlines the causes, etiopathology and mechanisms in such a way that most health care professionals can grasp the concepts.

img

Keyhole Approaches in Neurosurgery : Vol. I Concept and surgical technique

Offers a detailed systematic overview of the different approaches for minimally invasive craniotomies. After a description of the historical development of the particular craniotomy, each chapter illustrates the anatomical construction of the target region and the surgical approach itself with artistic illustrations and photographs of human cadaver dissections.

Classic Papers in Modern Diagnostic Radiology

The subject of diagnostic radiology is now very large and radiology depa- ments are involved in all areas of modern patient care. The defining event in m- ern radiology, and arguably the most significant development in radiology since Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays, was the invention of the CT scanner in the 1970s.The CT scanner introduced modern cross-sectional imaging and also di- tal imaging. We now have MRI and ultrasound and these techniques are replacing many traditional X-ray procedures. The developments in radiology have been the result of a fruitful interaction between the basic sciences, clinical medicine and the manufacturers. This can be seen by looking at the various sources of these publications. Change is produced by the interactions between the various dis- plines. The editors have had a very difficult task in selecting the key discoveries and descriptions. The radiological literature is very large.Medical imaging continues to develop rapidly and these papers are the foundations of our current practice.

Cerebral vasospasm : New strategies in research and treatment

More than 90 papers give a summary of clinical and basic studies on cerebral vasospasm, including reviews by leading researchers in this field. Several new frontiers are proposed for future research directions that will not only promote research from neurosurgery and neurology but also from other interconnecting fields of emergency medicine, electrophysiology, molecular biology, and vascular biology.
