The call for a reform got momentum since many Member States of the euro area broke the regulations of the pact at least once. The reform of the SGP succeeded in 2005.Renowned lawyers and economists from all over Europe present their views about the legal and economic foundations of the SGP and its performance so far. The major part of the book deals with the economic problems with the pact, its theoretical basis, possible improvements and the implications of the reformed SGP. The Foundations of Europe : European Integration Ideas in France, Germany and Britain in the 1950s
Thomas Hörber analyses the building process of European integration. He shows the parliamentary discourses of France, Germany and Britain to be representative of the national position of these states towards the developing concept of 'Europe'. He covers all key events and developments of the time which had an impact on the European integration process and provides an explanation for the convergence of national discourses towards a common Europe. This development was by no means a given and the analysis of parliamentary debates shows for the first time how vigorous the debates were on European integration in the 1950s, and how, despite setbacks (notably the failure of the European Defence Community), the discussion went in favour of integration.
The European Enterprise : Historical Investigation into a Future Species
What is Europe's impact on enterprises? 150 years ago, the emergence of nation-states created the national enterprise. After 50 years of European integration - is there a European firm distinct from the national firm? The book provides an assessment of the barriers to and prospects for this emerging species. Can it be claimed a major political failure of the EU not to have created an institution promoting European identity at the level of enterprise? The contributors look for European convergence at all levels of the economy - firm, branch, state, and EU. They stress various points of view, using diverse methods, and propose different measures. Though in its infancy, the European enterprise has the power to change both the perception and the actual face of Europe.
The EU and the Economies of the Eastern European Enlargement
The enlargement of the European Union towards the East from May 2004 has generated an increase of about 100 million inhabitants in the EU population, and has especially brought along major challenges and important opportunities both for the "new" countries and for the "old" member states. That is the main focus of this volume, which is divided into three sections. The first analyses the effects of the enlargement on the functioning of Community institutions, on the relations with the other Eastern European countries, and finally on regional and global economic dynamics; the second section analyses in detail the role of the monetary politics of the European Central Bank and the activities of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development; and the third deals with the importance of the entrepreneurial class in ensuring the success of the transition process of the Eastern European economies.

Solidarity in Europe : Citizens' Responses in Times of Crisis

Services Liberalisation in the Internal Market
Liberalisation of cross-border service provision developed into one of the most controversial European integration issues. In the public debate – that for the first time provided a glimpse of a European public in nuce – in particular the first draft of the regulation was subject to severe criticism, being often called the "Frankenstein directive", the transposition of which inevitably would lead to a breakdown of the so called "European Social Model", a term that was also coined during the debate. Quantitative Economic Policy : Essays in Honour of Andrew Hughes Hallett
Quantitative economic policy and econometrics were developed along with macroeconomics in the 1930s. Econometric techniques and models are still being used extensively in the business of forecasting and policy advice. In particular, policy simulations with econometric models have become standard tools for evaluating and designing macroeconomic stabilization policies. For instance, such studies provided important arguments for the popularization of the recent steps towards European integration such as the European Single Market, the European Monetary Union, and the Enlargement of the European Union. In this book, some recent advances in the theory and applications of quantitative economic policy are presented, with particular emphasis on fiscal and monetary policies in a European and global context. Andrew Hughes Hallett, a pioneer and major scientist in quantitative economic policy analysis, is being honoured by this volume, whose contributors are among his friends and former students.

This two-volume work presents social cohesion and demographic challenges that are associated with low birth rates and population ageing. It does so from the perspective of citizens and key policy actors. The work analyses peoples’ attitudes about demographic trends and expectations towards private networks and public policies. It places these in the societal context of national specificities in the fourteen countries and regards them as part of the dynamics of the European integration process. Volume 2 focuses on research findings related to general knowledge of people concerning demographic developments, gender issues, and ageing. In addition, it presents the results of a Delphi-Study on the views of key policy actors in the area of demographic developments. The volume concludes with policy implications of the findings, and a reflected overview of all results collected in the two volumes of this work.

Napoleonic Governance in the Netherlands and Northwest Germany : Conquest, Incorporation, and Integration
This Palgrave Pivot explores the ways in which French Emperor Napoleon tried to integrate the present-day Netherlands and Northwest Germany into his Empire, by replacing traditional institutions and governing practices with French ones ('Napoleonic governance'). The northern periphery of the Napoleonic Empire continues to be overlooked by the bulk of historians; this study shows that a transregional approach can yield important findings. In a broader sense, the study does not deal with these regions alone, but also with the difficulties that are inherent to European integration.
Integration, Growth, and Cohesion in an Enlarged European Union
This book’s thirteen contributions bring together the results of recent research on determinants of regional specialization, growth, and convergence in the context of European integration. They offer fresh theoretical and empirical evidence on patterns of regional production structures, specialization, regional disparities, convergence and divergence processes, and evaluation of cohesion policies on both current and future European Union (EU) member states in the context of increased integration. These subjects are addressed in both individual and cross-country analysis using innovative methodologies. Institutional Reform for Innovation and Entrepreneurship : An Agenda for Europe
The authors of this book advise the economies of the European Union to become more entrepreneurial in promoting innovation and economic growth. The authors propose a reform strategy with respect to several aspects to achieve this goal. Starting with the rule of law and the protection of property rights; the tax system; the authors deal with regulations governing savings, capital and finance, and the organization of labor markets and social insurance systems. Framework strategies related to the regulations governing goods and service markets, bankruptcy and insolvency are also put forward. A core understanding and future path is also provided towards R&D, commercialization and knowledge spillovers; human capital investments; and informal institutions.
