Oncogenes Meet Metabolism : From Deregulated Genes to a Broader Understanding of Tumour Physiology

In 1920s, Otto Warburg described the phenomenon of ‘aerobic glycolysis’, the ability of tumour cells to convert glucose to lactate in the presence of normal oxygen conditions. Warburg’s hypothesis of an altered metabolism in cancer cells found no immediate acceptance, though it was latter confirmed for most human tumours. With the advent of molecular biology the focus in tumour research has shifted towards the search for oncogenes. However, the interest in cancer molecular profiling eventually led to a renaissance of the Warburg effect trying to combine genetic alterations with effects on metabolism with the help of modern analytic technologies to rapidly analyze broad varieties of metabolites in various tissues and bodyfluids (metabonomics).

Object-Oriented Technology. ECOOP 2004 Workshop Reader ; ECOOP 2004 Workshop, Oslo, Norway, June 14-18, 2004, Final Reports

Following the tradition of the ECOOP Workshop Reader, we strove for hi- quality, value-adding and open-ended workshop reports. The result, as you can judge from the following pages, is a thought-provoking snap shot of the current- searchinobject-orientation, full of pointers for further exploration of the covered topics. We want to thank our workshop organizers who, despite the additional burden, did a great job in putting together these reports.

Nutrition in Kidney Disease

The field of kidney disease has evolved over the years to encompass a broad and sophisticated knowledge base. There has been a proliferation of scientific information and technical advances in the field. In Nutrition in Kidney Disease, the authors provide a comprehensive perspective of the emerging science in nutrition in kidney disease. This important book is written by a collaborative group of distinguished dietitians and physicians in the specialized field of kidney disease and clinical nutrition, who have devoted their careers to the care of patients with kidney disease. At the end of key chapters, case studies assess knowledge of the subject within the context of didactic curriculums.

Nutraceuticals and bone health

Here is an informative volume on the importance of nutraceuticals and herbal remedies for bone health. It explains the probable mechanisms of nutraceuticals for the prevention, treatment, and management of bone-related diseases as well as their curable effects on bone injuries. The volume covers the progression and development of bones, which is a multifaceted process that requires an endless and ample supply of nutrients, such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, protein, vitamin D, magnesium, and fluoride. The book delves into the beneficial effects of nutraceuticals on overall bone health and for the treatment of bone disorders such as osteoporosis, bone fractures, scoliosis and related complications, rheumatoid arthritis, Paget’s disease, bursitis, gout, and carpal tunnel syndrome. It also addresses the use of nutraceuticals for inflammatory deformities and rickets.

Numerical analysis

Introduces readers to the theory and application of modern numerical approximation techniques. Providing an accessible treatment that only requires a calculus prerequisite, the authors explain how, why, and when approximation techniques can be expected to work-and why, in some situations, they fail. A wealth of examples and exercises develop readers' intuition, and demonstrate the subject's practical applications to important everyday problems in math, computing, engineering, and physical science disciplines.

Noninvasive Vascular Diagnosis : A Practical Guide to Therapy

This book is the definitive text on the current techniques used in assessing vascular disorders. It covers all aspects of noninvasive evaluation of the circulatory system in the extremities. They are also guided through the establishment and accreditation of a vascular laboratory and introduced to the theories behind diagnostic testing. There has been expansion of the book by the inclusion of special sections dedicated to the practical clinical management of patients through the vascular laboratory. The book is therefore invaluable to all those working in vascular laboratories as well as cardiologists, general surgeons involved in vascular surgery and the vascular surgery and medicine community in general.

Noncommunicable diseases

Focuses on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory disease and their five shared main risk factors (tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and air pollution) as defined by the United Nations, this book provides a synopsis of one of the world’s biggest challenges of the 21st century. NCDs prematurely claim the lives of millions of people across the world every year, with untold suffering to hundreds of millions more, trapping many people in poverty and curtailing economic growth and sustainable development. While resources between and within countries largely differ, the key principles of surveillance, prevention and management apply to all countries, as does the need to focus resources on the most cost-effective and affordable interventions and the need for strong political will, sufficient resources, and sustained and broad partnerships. This compendium consists of 59 short and accessible chapters in six sections: (i) describing and measuring the burden and impact of NCDs / (ii) the burden, epidemiology and priority interventions for individual NCDs / (iii) social determinants and risk factors for NCDs and priority interventions / (iv) global policy / (v) cross-cutting issues / and (vi) stakeholder action.

Nodal Discontinuous Galerkin Methods : Algorithms, Analysis, and Applications

This book discusses a family of computational methods, known as discontinuous Galerkin methods, for solving partial differential equations. While these methods have been known since the early 1970s, they have experienced an almost explosive growth interest during the last ten to fifteen years, leading both to substantial theoretical developments and the application of these methods to a broad range of problems. These methods are different in nature from standard methods such as finite element or finite difference methods, often presenting a challenge in the transition from theoretical developments to actual implementations and applications.

NMR - From Spectra to Structures : An Experimental Approach

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is one of the most powerful analytical methods. This practice-oriented textbook aims at teaching how NMR experiments should be used to make structural asssignments. The book is intended as a practical guide for students and laboratory personnel, so that the emphasis is on practical rather than on theoretical aspects, which are treated only to the extent necessary to understand the experiments and to interpret the results. The second edition has been expanded to include several other heteronuclei (15N, 19F, 29Si, 77Se, 113Cd, 117Sn/119Sn, 195Pt, 207Pb) and a new chapter on solid state NMR. The problems section has been enlarged and now includes 50 problems.

Nexus Network Journal : Leonardo da Vinci : Architecture and Mathematics

The quintessential Renaissance Man, Leonardo da Vinci was well aware of the fundamental importance of mathematics for architecture. This issue of the Nexus Network Journal examines Leonardo’s knowledge of theoretical mathematics, explores how he used concepts of geometry in his designs for architectural projects, and reports on a real-life construction project using Leonardo’s principles. Authors include Sylvie Duvernoy, Kim Williams, Rinus Roelofs, Biagio Di Carlo, Mark Reynolds, João Pedro Xavier, Vesna Petresin, Christopher Glass, and Jane Burry. To complete the issue Rachel Fletcher writes her Geometer’s Angle column on "Dynamic Symmetry", Michael Ostwald reviews A Theory of General Ethics by Warwick Fox, Sarah Clough Edwards reviews Inigo Jones and the Classical Tradition by Christy Anderson, and Sylvie Duvernoy reviews Architecture and Mathematics in Ancient Egypt by Corinna Rossi.

New Concepts of Antiviral Therapy

Antiviral drugs are important tools for treatment or prevention of viral infections. These drugs were first used for monotherapy, but nowadays combinations of antiviral agents are often part of a standard treatment as evidenced by e.g. HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy). However, in almost every case of antiviral therapy, drug resistant viruses appear. In addition, the low oral bioavailability, toxicity and the number of severe side effects still pose significant problems. All of the latter issues limit the clinical usefulness and drive the need for improved antiviral strategies. These strategies include new drugs and targets, novel modes of action, vector-based treatments and even the block of defined genes by inhibiting mRNA formation (siRNA).
