Growing Food : A guide to food production

This specialist handbook is intended as a quick and easy reference guide for individuals and organisations that are involved with the production of food, from both agriculture and horticulture. It is designed to be used as a reference book that answers basic questions about how food is produced from plants, and aims to demystify the subject of growing food as far as possible. The focus is firmly on the technical aspects of food crops; animal husbandry, agrochemicals and genetic engineering are only briefly mentioned. The book is divided into three sections: 1. Principles and Practices used in Agriculture and Horticulture; 2. Description and Characteristics of the Main Food Crops; 3. Naming and Classification of Plants, Seed Purchase Procedures, Conversion Tables and Statistics, Planning and Assessing Agricultural Projects.

Genome Mapping and Molecular Breeding in Plants presents the current status of the elucidation and improvement of plant genomes of economic interest. The focus is on genetic and physical mapping, positioning, cloning, monitoring of desirable genes by molecular breeding and the most recent advances in genomics. The series comprises seven volumes: Cereals and Millets; Oilseeds; Pulses, Sugar and Tuber Crops; Fruits and Nuts; Vegetables; Technical Crops; and Forest Trees. Fruits and nuts form the largest group among crop plants. Several constraints such as long life cycle, heterozygosity and large plant size caused comparatively slow research progress in the past. The chapters on 20 fruit and nut crops authored by 56 renowned scientists from 12 countries include for the first time comprehensive reviews on mango, banana, olive, pineapple, pistachio, persimmon and papaya. Other crops covered are apple, grape, cherry, plum, peach, pear, apricot, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, almond, citrus and avocado.

For example, usual autocorrect systems will not correct a sentence like “An apple is better than a banana” as this is a syntactically correct sentence. However, a correction should be made here to the word “then” and the sentence should be, “An apple is better than a banana.” These types of mistakes are common in people texting and can be found for example in people learning English as a second language. Natural Language Processing can be summarized as combining the utilization of computation to understand the concepts of natural language and speech.

Efficient Screening Techniques to Identify Mutants with TR4 Resistance in Banana : Protocols

The Joint FAO/IAEA Centre of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture implemented a Coordinated Research Project (CRP) ‘Efficient Screening Techniques to Identify Mutants with Disease Resistance for Coffee and Banana” (2015-2020). This CRP brought together experts from Asia, Europe and Africa in addition to experts of the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre to develop resistance against TR4 through mutation-assisted breeding. Induced mutagenesis is particularly attractive in case of banana since most cultivated bananas are seedless, thus hampering conventional cross breeding

Biotechnologies for plant mutation breeding : Protocols

This book offers 19 detailed protocols on the use of induced mutations in crop breeding and functional genomics studies, which cover topics including chemical and physical mutagenesis, phenotypic screening methods, traditional TILLING and TILLING by sequencing, doubled haploidy, targeted genome editing, and low-cost methods for the molecular characterization of mutant plants that are suitable for laboratories in developing countries. The collection of protocols equips users with the techniques they need in order to start a program on mutation breeding or functional genomics using both forward and reverse-genetic approaches. Methods are provided for seed and vegetatively propagated crops (e.g. banana, barley, cassava, jatropha, rice) and can be adapted for use in other species.
