The Work : Architecture, Urban Design, Drawings, and Sculptures
After graduating, Krier first worked with O. M. Ungers and Frei Otto before setting up his own studios in Vienna and Berlin. He later taught at the Vienna University of Technology from 1976 to 1998 and as a visiting professor at Yale University in 1986. Drawing on a wealth of historical models and archetypal patterns, he developed new typologies of streets and public squares as an architect and urban planner, and was responsible for numerous urban development projects throughout Europe. These included the perimeter block development on Ritterstrasse for the IBA in Berlin, the residential complex on Breitenfurter Strasse in Vienna, the Kirchsteigfeld district in Potsdam, and numerous projects in the Netherlands.
SOM structural engineering
Presents the theoretical background of SOM’s structural group. On the basis of a variety of projects with their general structural concept or their specific details, the book explains the process of finding corresponding solutions. These solutions illustrate the company's core values: simplicity, clarity, hierarchy, efficiency and continuous reseach.In addition, the projects – from James Turrel Skyspace to Burj Khalifa – are also placed in the context of SOM’s work as a whole using anecdotes from a number of other well-known SOM projects as John Hancock or Sears Tower.
Brunet Saunier Architecture : Monospace and Simplexity
Discusses and analyzes this concept in detail, presenting trueto- scale floor plans, cross-sections, architectural views, and other information. The Monospace concept - which is based on a process of creative reduction down to essentials, i.e. "simplexity" - is adaptive rather than normative or prescriptive, and based on probabilities rather than determinism. It respects energy, even when it sometimes uses it. It takes the individual's experience into account, and starts from the position of the subject. It also permits changing perspectives. This design concept should attract attention far beyond the borders of France.
