Runtime Verification ; 7th International Workshop, RV 2007, Vancover, Canada, March 13, 2007, Revised Selected Papers

Runtime verification is a recent direction in formal methods research, which is complementary to such well-established formal verifcation methods as model checking. In 2007, the workshop was held on March 13, 2007 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, co-located to the Conference on Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD) in order to explore the emerging connections between the two communities.

Rules and Rule Markup Languages for the Semantic Web ; First International Conference, RuleML 2005, Galway, Ireland, November 10-12, 2005, Proceedings

RuleML 2005 also accommodated the ?rst Workshop on OWL: Experiences and Directions. Rules are widely recognized to be a major part of the frontier of the Semantic Web, and critical to the early adoption and applications of knowledge-based techniques in- business, especially enterprise integration and B2B e-commerce. This includes kno- edge representation (KR) theory and algorithms; markup languages based on such KR; engines, translators, and other tools; relationships to standardization efforts; and, not least, applications. Interest and activity in the area of rules for the Semantic Web has grown rapidly over the last five years. The theme for RuleML 2005 was rule languages for reactive and proactive rules, complex event p- cessing, and event-driven rules, to support the emergence of Semantic Web applications.

Roots and Patterns : Hebrew Morpho-syntax

This book is simultaneously a theoretical study in morphosyntax and an in-depth empirical study of Hebrew. Based on Hebrew data, the book defends the status of the root as a lexical and phonological unit and argues that roots, rather than verbs or nouns, are the primitives of word formation. A central claim made throughout the book is the role of locality in word formation, teasing apart word formation from roots and word formation from existing words syntactically, semantically and phonologically. The book focuses on Hebrew, a language with rich verb morphology, where both roots and noun- and verb-creating morphology are morphologically transparent.

Rigid Flexibility : The Logic of Intelligence

While most of the current works in Artificial Intelligence (AI) focus on individual aspects of intelligence and cognition, the project described in this book, Non-Axiomatic Reasoning System (NARS), is designed and developed to attack the AI problem as a whole. This project is based on the belief that what we call "intelligence" can be understood and reproduced as "the capability of a system to adapt to its environment while working with insufficient knowledge and resources". According to this idea, a novel reasoning system is designed, which challenges all the dominating theories in how such a system should be built. The system carries out reasoning, learning, categorizing, planning, decision making, etc., as different facets of the same underlying process. This theory also provides unified solutions to many problems in AI, logic, psychology, and philosophy.

Representation Learning : Propositionalization and Embeddings

This monograph addresses advances in representation learning, a cutting-edge research area of machine learning. Representation learning refers to modern data transformation techniques that convert data of different modalities and complexity, including texts, graphs, and relations, into compact tabular representations, which effectively capture their semantic properties and relations. The monograph focuses on (i) propositionalization approaches, established in relational learning and inductive logic programming, and (ii) embedding approaches, which have gained popularity with recent advances in deep learning. The authors establish a unifying perspective on representation learning techniques developed in these various areas of modern data science, enabling the reader to understand the common underlying principles and to gain insight using selected examples and sample Python code. The monograph should be of interest to a wide audience, ranging from data scientists, machine learning researchers and students to developers, software engineers and industrial researchers interested in hands-on AI solutions.

Reasoning Web ; Vol. 3564 : 1st International Summer School 2005, Msida, Malta, July 25-29, 2005, Revised Lectures

Contains the tutorial papers of the Summer School “Reasoning Web, ”July 25–29, 2005. The main idea of the Semantic Web is to enrich Web data with meta-data carrying a “meaning” of the data and allowing Web-based systems to reason about data (and meta-data). The meta-data used in Semantic Web applications is usually linked to a conceptualization of the application domain shared by di?erent applications. Such a conceptualization is called an ontology and species classes of objects and relations between them. Ontologies are defined by ontology languages, based on logic and supporting formal reasoning. Just as the current Web is inherently heterogeneous in data formats and data semantics, the Semantic Web will be inherently heterogeneous in its reasoning forms. - deed, any single form of reasoning turns out to be insu?cient in the Semantic Web.
