Recent Advances in Operator Theory and Its Applications : The Israel Gohberg Anniversary Vol.ume

Contains a selection of papers in modern operator theory and its applications. Most of them are directly related to lectures presented at the Fourteenth International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications (IWOTA 2003) held at the University of Cagliari, Italy, in the period of June 24–27, 2003. The workshop, which was attended by 108 mathematicians – including a number of PhD and postdoctoral students – from 22 countries, presented eight special sessions on 1) control theory, 2) interpolation theory, 3) inverse scattering, 4) numerical estimates for operators, 5) numerical treatment of integral equations, 6) pseudo differential operators, 7) realizations and transformations of analytic functions and inde?nite inner product spaces, and 8) structured matrices. The program consisted of 19 plenary lectures of 45 minutes and 78 lectures of 30 minutes in four parallel sessions. The present volume re?ects the wide range and rich variety of topics presented and discussed at the workshop, both within and outside the special sessions.

Rationality at Work : Logics of Collective Action in the Labour Market

Radiation Risk Estimates in Normal and Emergency Situations

The importance of this paper for genetics and radiobiology was enormous – not only for radiobiology, but for genetics in general. The "target" of the radiation action was indeed the "gene", that for the first time found a clear, operational definition. The organisers of this Conference proposed to convene scientists from all over the world to discuss the impact of radiation risk estimates in normal and emergency situations. This was the starting point of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop, whose proceedings are published in this book. The parallel development of the Conference and the Workshop resulted in a true synergism, both events taking advantage of the mixed environment of molecular biologists, genetists, radiobiologists, radioecologists, biophysicists, etc.

Qualitative Theory of Planar Differential Systems

The book deals essentially with systems of polynomial autonomous ordinary differential equations in two real variables. The emphasis is mainly qualitative, although attention is also given to more algebraic aspects as a thorough study of the center/focus problem and recent results on integrability. In the last two chapters the performant software tool P4 is introduced: based on both algebraic manipulation and numerical calculation, this was conceived for the purpose of drawing "Polynomial Planar Phase Portraits" on part of the plane, or on a Poincaré compactification, or even on a Poincaré-Lyapunov compactification of the plane.From the start, differential systems are represented by vector fields enabling, in full strength, a dynamical systems approach. All essential notions, including invariant manifolds, normal forms, desingularization of singularities, index theory and limit cycles, are introduced and the main results are proved for smooth systems with the necessary specifications for analytic and polynomial systems.

Public Key Infrastructure ; Vol. 3545 : 2nd European PKI Workshop : Research and Applications, EuroPKI 2005, Canterbury, UK, June 30- July 1, 2005, Revised Selected Papers

The workshop program comprised a keynote speech from Dr. Carlisle Adams, followed by18 refereed papers, with a workshop dinner in and guided tour around the historic Dover Castle. Dr. Adams is well known for his contributions to the CAST family of s- metric encryption algorithms, to international standards from the IETF, ISO, and OASIS, authorship of over 30 refereed journals and conference papers, and co-authorship of Understanding PKI: Concepts, Standards, and Deployment Considerations (Addison-Wesley). Dr. Adams keynote speech was entitled ‘PKI: Views from the Dispassionate “I”,’ in which he presented his thoughts on why PKIhas been availableas an authentication technology for many years now,but has only enjoyed large-scale success in fairly limited contexts to date. He also presented his thoughts on the possible future(s) of this technology, with emphasis on the major factors hindering adoption and some potential directions for future research in these areas. In response to the Call for Papers, 43 workshop papers were submitted in total. All papers were blind reviewed by at least two members of the Program Committee, the majority having 3 reviewers, with a few borderline papers having 4 or more reviewers ; 18 papers were accepted for presentation in 8 sessions.

Protest Movements in Asylum and Deportation

Deals with contestations “from below” of legal policies and implementation practices in asylum and deportation. Consequently, it covers three types of mobilization: solidarity protests against the deportation of refused asylum seekers, refugee activism campaigning for residence rights and inclusion, and restrictive protests against the reception of asylum seekers. By applying both a longitudinal analysis of protest events and a series of in-depth case studies in three immigration countries, this edited volume provides comparative insights into these three types of movement in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland over a time span of twenty-five years. Embedded in concepts of political change, limited state sovereignty, and migration control, the findings shed light on actors, repertoires, and the effects of protest activities. Proteomics for drug discovery

Progress in Cryptology - INDOCRYPT 2004 ; 5th International Conference on Cryptology in India, Chennai, India, December 20-22, 2004, Proceedings

The INDOCRYPT series of conferences started in 2000. INDOCRYPT 2004 was the ?fth one in this series. The popularity of this series is increasing every year. The number of papers submitted to INDOCRYPT 2004 was 181, out of which 147 papers conformed to the specifications in the call for papers and, therefore, were accepted to the review process. Those 147 submissions were spread over 22 countries. Only 30 papers were accepted to this proceedings. We should note that many of the papers that were not accepted were of good quality but only the top 30 papers were accepted. Each submission received at least three independent - views. The selection process also included a Web-based discussion phase. We made efforts to compare the submissions with other ongoing conferences around the world in order to ensure detection of double-submissions, which were not - lowed by the call for papers. We wish to acknowledge the use of the Web-based review software developed by Bart Preneel, Wim Moreau, and Joris Claessens in conducting the review process electronically. The software greatly facilitated the Program Committee in completing the review process on time. We would like to thank C´ edric Lauradoux and the team at INRIA for their total support in conguring and managing the Web-based submission and review softwares.

Problems in Algebraic Number Theory

Problems and Theorems in Classical Set Theory

This is the first comprehensive collection of problems in set theory. Most of classical set theory is covered, classical in the sense that independence methods are not used, but classical also in the sense that most results come from the period between 1920-1970. Many problems are also related to other fields of mathematics such as algebra, combinatorics, topology and real analysis. The authors choose not to concentrate on the axiomatic framework, although some aspects are elaborated (axiom of foundation and the axiom of choice). Rather than using drill exercises, most problems are challenging and require work, wit, and inspiration. The problems are organized in a way that earlier problems help in the solution of later ones. For many problems, the authors trace the origin and provide proper references at the end of the solution.
