Full of Life : UNESCO Biosphere Reserves - Model Regions for Sustainable Development
UNESCO biosphere reserves are full of life. Here, people put sustainable development into practice: economic, ecological, social and cultural objectives are pursued, conserving precious natural spaces in the process. People are opening up new opportunities for today and are taking responsibility for future generations. What could be more exciting than a look at new ways into the future? The 14 biosphere reserves in Germany are part of a world network of 440 areas in the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB). Founded in the 1970s to research the relationship between man and the environment, biosphere reserves have been developed into model regions for sustainable development since the 1992 Rio Conference. This publication gives an overview of developments to date and the new direction for the MAB Programme in Germany. The generally valid guidelines for the conservation, care and development of these areas are explained. Various project examples from practice and research bear witness to the living implementation of the Programme in the German UNESCO biosphere reserves.

FPGA Implementations of Neural Networks
During the 1980s and early 1990s there was signi?cant work in the design and implementation of hardware neurocomputers. Nevertheless, most of these efforts may be judged to have been unsuccessful: at no time have have ha- ware neurocomputers been in wide use. This lack of success may be largely attributed to the fact that earlier work was almost entirely aimed at developing custom neurocomputers, based on ASIC technology, but for such niche - eas this technology was never suf?ciently developed or competitive enough to justify large-scale adoption. On the other hand, gate-arrays of the period m- tioned were never large enough nor fast enough for serious arti?cial-neur- network (ANN) applications.

ETAPS 2005 was the eighth instance of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software. ETAPS is an annual federated conference that was est- lished in 1998 by combining a number of existing and new conferences. This year it comprised ?ve conferences (CC, ESOP, FASE, FOSSACS, TACAS), 17 satellite wo- shops (AVIS, BYTECODE, CEES, CLASE, CMSB, COCV, FAC, FESCA, FINCO, GCW-DSE, GLPL, LDTA, QAPL, SC, SLAP, TGC, UITP), seven invited lectures (not including those that were speci?c to the satellite events), and several tutorials. We - ceived over 550 submissions to the ?ve conferences this year, giving acceptance rates below 30% for each one. Congratulations to all the authors who made it to the ?nal program! I hope that most of the other authors still found a way of participating in this exciting event and I hope you will continue submitting. The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system devel- ment process, including speci?cation, design, implementation, analysis and impro- ment. The languages, methodologies and tools which support these activities are all well within its scope.

The increasing relevance of security to real-life applications, such as electronic commerce and Internet banking, is attested by the fast-growing number of - search groups, events, conferences, and summer schools that address the study of foundations for the analysis and the design of security aspects. The “Int- national School on Foundations of Security Analysis and Design” (FOSAD, see http://www.sti.uniurb.it/events/fosad/)has been one of the foremost events - tablishedwiththegoalofdisseminatingknowledgeinthiscriticalarea,especially for young researchers approaching the ?eld and graduate students coming from less-favoured and non-leading countries. The FOSAD school is held annually at the Residential Centre of Bertinoro (http://www.ceub.it/), in the fascinating setting of a former convent and ep- copal fortress that has been transformed into a modern conference facility with computing services and Internet access. Since the ?rst school, in 2000, FOSAD hasattractedmorethan250participantsand50lecturersfromallovertheworld.
Foundations of AOP for J2EE Development
Foundations of AOP for J2EE Development covers a relatively new programming paradigm: aspect-oriented programming, or AOP. Presented are the core concepts of AOP: AspectJ 5, JBoss AOP, Spring AOP, and JAC. Specific features of these tools are compared. The book also explores the potential uses of AOP in everyday programming life, such as design patterns implementation, program testing, and application management. In the latter part of the book, the authors show how AOP can ease the task of J2EE application development (J2EE is known for being a rich and somewhat complicated framework).
Form-oriented analysis : A new methodology to model form-based applications
Form-based applications range from simple web shops to complex enterprise resource planning systems. Draheim and Weber adapt well-established basic modeling techniques in a novel way to achieve a modeling framework optimized for this broad application domain. They introduce new modeling artifacts, such as page diagrams and form storyboards, and separate dialogue patterns to allow for reuse. In their implementation they have developed new constructs such as typed server pages, and tools for forward and reverse engineering of presentation layers. The methodology is explained using an online bookshop as a running example in which the user can experience the modeling concepts in action. The combination of theoretical achievements and hands-on practical advice and tools makes this book a reference work for both researchers in the areas of software architectures and submit-response style user interfaces, and professionals designing and developing such applications. Formal Modelling in Electronic Commerce
Advances in automation for electronic commerce require improved understanding and formalization of the objects, processes, and policies of commerce itself. These include business objects such as bills of lading and contracts; processes such as workflows and trade procedures; and policies covering such problems as contract or procedure validation and strategic behaviour. This book is about theory, formalization, and proof-of-concept implementation of these and related matters. In addition to presenting state-of-the-art results, the book places this work in the context of nearly twenty years of developments in formal modelling for electronic commerce.
