Lifting Modules : Supplements and Projectivity in Module Theory
Extending modules are generalizations of injective modules and, dually, lifting modules generalize projective supplemented modules. There is a certain asymmetry in this duality. While the theory of extending modules is well documented in monographs and text books, the purpose of our monograph is to provide a thorough study of supplements and projectivity conditions needed to investigate classes of modules related to lifting modules. The text begins with an introduction to small submodules, the radical, variations on projectivity, and hollow dimension. The subsequent chapters consider preradicals and torsion theories (in particular related to small modules), decompositions of modules (including the exchange property and local semi-T-nilpotency), supplements in modules (with specific emphasis on semilocal endomorphism rings), finishing with a long chapter on lifting modules, leading up their use in the theory of perfect rings, Harada rings, and quasi-Frobenius rings.

Paradoxically, serious intra-abdominal infections are the forgotten ones in the world of infectious diseases. Paradoxical, because they are very common pathologies, affecting all age groups of the population and often life-threatening; paradoxical, because they concern many medical specialties through intensive care, gastroenterology, hepatology, imaging, infectious diseases, emergencies and surgery. Hence the need, thanks to an interdisciplinary collaboration, to publish a book in French bringing together all infectious abdominal pathologies, thus offering a synthesis of recent data from the literature in this field. This document should allow the various specialties concerned to find updates integrating the latest clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic data. Specialty interns and practitioners in the field will find something to establish an effective and up-to-date strategy for the management of patients with these pathologies, the high incidence of which and the severity of which is too often overlooked, it is important to remember.

Kristian Birkeland : The First Space Scientist
PREFACEThisscientific biography of Kristian Birkeland (1867–1917) was written to bring the story ofa Norwegian national hero to the attention ofthe English-speaking world. Birkeland’sheroic stature was established not on a field of military battle,but in the bitter cold of the Artic wilderness ashe sought to answer basic questions abouthow the Sun controlled northern lights andmag-netic storms. He was also afather of Norsk Hydro one ofNorway’s largest industries. Birkel and died before reaching the age of 50.Because Birkel and never kept adiary, documented information about his family and private life is sparse.
