Competence and Vulnerability in Biomedical Research

In this book, the author develops a novel justificatory framework for making judgments of decisional competence to consent to biomedical research with reference to five groups of cognitively vulnerable individuals - older children and adolescents, adults with intellectual disabilities, adults with depression, adults with schizophrenia and adults with dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Clinical Neuroanatomy : A Neurobehavioral Approach

This book begins with a traditional review of the basic internal and external morphology, major nerve and fiber tracts, behavioral correlates, and clinical syndromes associated with spinal cord, brain stem, and cerebellum designed to reacquaint students and practicing clinicians with the functional anatomy of the subtentorial central nervous system. However, as the text was specifically geared to meet the needs of those practitioners whose primary interest is in what might be termed "higher order cognitive-behavioral function," the main focus of the text is on the brain itself. Chamomile & insulin nasal spray in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease

Chamomile is one of the most widely used herbs in Western countries, in the present study, we assessed the effect of chamomile combined with insulin on the learning and memory impairments (Alzheimer's disease) induced by scopolamine. The cognition-enhancing effect of chamomile & insulin was investigated using the Y-maze test. Drug-induced amnesia was induced by treating animals with scopolamine. Mix solution administration intranasally reversed scopolamine induced cognitive impairments in mice by the Y-maze test. Moreover, results suggest that the combination of both chamomile and insulin may be a useful cognitive impairment treatment, and its beneficial effects are mediated, in part, via inhibitory effects in vivo on the release of several pro-inflammatory mediators and as a co-absorbent.

Biomimetic neural learning for intelligent robots : Intelligent systems, cognitive robotics, and neuroscience

This book presents research performed as part of the EU project on biomimeticmultimodal learning in a mirror neuron-based robot (MirrorBot) and contribu-tions presented at the International AI-Workshop on NeuroBotics. The over-all aim of the book is to present a broad spectrum of current research intobiomimetic neural learning for intelligent autonomous robots. In this book we show the development of newtechniques using cell assemblies, associative neural networks, and Hebbian-typelearning in order to associate vision, language and motor concepts. We havedeveloped biomimetic multimodal learning and language instruction in a robotto investigate the task of searching for objects. As well as the research performedin this area for the MirrorBot project, the second part of this book incorporatessignificant contributions from other research in the field of biomimetic robotics.This second part of the book concentrates on the progress made in neuroscienceinspired robotic learning approaches (in short: NeuroBotics). We hope that this book stimulates and encourages new research in this in-teresting and dynamic area.

The embodied nature of sensory-motor intelligence requires a continuous and focused interplay between the control of motor activities and the interpretation of feedback from perceptual modalities. Decision making about the selection of information from the incoming sensory stream – in tune with contextual processing on a current task and an agent’s global objectives – becomes a further challenging issue in attentional control. Attention must operate at interfaces between bottom-up driven world int- pretation and top-down driven information selection, thus acting at the core of arti?cial cognitive systems. These insights have already induced changes in AI-related disciplines, such as the design of behavior-based robot control and the computational modeling of animats. Today, the development of enabling technologiessuch as autonomous robotic systems,miniaturizedmobile–evenwearable–sensors,andambientintelligence systems involves the real-time analysis of enormous quantities of data. These data have to be processed in an intelligent way to provide “on time delivery” of the required relevant information. Knowledge has to be applied about what needs to be attended to, and when, and what to do in a meaningful sequence, in correspondence with visual feedback.
