Solar electric power generation - photovoltaic energy systems : Modeling of optical and thermal performance, electrical yield, energy balance, effect on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
Professor Krauter demonstrates how the importance of accurate yield calculations, optimal system performance, and new prototypes aid in cost reductions. The potential of solar electric power generation as a means to significantly reduce CO2 emissions is also detailed. In addition, various locations for the production and installation of photovoltaic power plants are considered – with surprising results.
Software-Intensive Systems and New Computing Paradigms : Challenges and Visions
The objective was to imagine the landscape in which next generations of software-intensive systems will operate and the challenges they present to computing, software engineering, cognition and intelligence. The volume starts with an overview of the current state of the art and the research missions in engineering software-intensive systems. The book is structured in three major parts: ensemble engineering, theory and formal methods, and novel computing paradigms. These papers cover a broad spectrum of relevant topics ranging from methods, languages and tools for ensemble engineering, socio-technical and cyber-physical systems, ensembles in urban environments, formal methods and mathematical foundations for ensembles, orchestration languages to disruptive paradigms such as molecular and chemical computing.
Software product lines in action : The best industrial practice in product line engineering
Software product lines represent perhaps the most exciting paradigm shift in software development since the advent of high-level programming languages. Nowhere else in software engineering have we seen such breathtaking improvements in cost, quality, time to market, and developer productivity, often registering in the order-of-magnitude range. While the underlying concepts are straightforward enough – building a family of related products or systems by planned and careful reuse of a base of generalized software development assets – the devil can be in the details, as successful product line practice can involve organizational change, business process change, and technology change.
Software for Data Analysis : Programming with R
This book guides the reader through programming with R, beginning with simple interactive use and progressing by gradual stages, starting with simple functions. More advanced programming techniques can be added as needed, allowing users to grow into software contributors, benefiting their careers and the community. R packages provide a powerful mechanism for contributions to be organized and communicated. The techniques covered include such modern programming enhancements as classes and methods, namespaces, and interfaces to spreadsheets or data bases, as well as computations for data visualization, numerical methods, and the use of text data.
Software Engineering 2 : Specification of Systems and Languages
volume 2 covers the basic principles and techniques of specifying systems and languages. It deals with modelling the semiotics (pragmatics, semantics and syntax of systems and languages), modelling spatial and simple temporal phenomena, and such specialized topics as modularity (incl. UML class diagrams), Petri nets, live sequence charts, statecharts, and temporal logics, including the duration calculus. Finally, the book presents techniques for interpreter and compiler development of functional, imperative, modular and parallel programming languages.
Software Engineering 1 : Abstraction and Modelling
Volume 1 covers the basic principles and techniques of formal methods abstraction and modelling. First this book provides a sound, but simple basis of insight into discrete mathematics: numbers, sets, Cartesians, types, functions, the Lambda Calculus, algebras, and mathematical logic. Then it trains its readers in basic property- and model-oriented specification principles and techniques. The model-oriented concepts that are common to such specification languages as B, VDM-SL, and Z are explained here using the RAISE specification language (RSL). This book then covers the basic principles of applicative (functional), imperative, and concurrent (parallel) specification programming. Finally, the volume contains a comprehensive glossary of software engineering, and extensive indexes and references.

Component-based software development is the next step after object-oriented programming that promises to reduce complexity and improve reusability. These advantages have also been identified by the industry, and consequently, over the past years, a large number of component-based techniques and processes have been adopted in many of these organizations.
Soft Ground Tunnel Design
Teaches the principles of tunnel and underground space design in soft ground. ‘Soft ground’ refers to soil, in contrast to rock. The book focuses on stability, prediction of ground movements, and structural design of the lining. It shows that the choice of excavation and support methods depends on ground stability, limitation of damage to the existing built environment, and health, safety and environmental considerations. Readers will be able to: understand the basis for choosing an underground construction method and/or ground improvement method / calculate heading stability / predict ground movements / understand the complex soil-structure interaction around an advancing tunnel / design tunnel linings in soft ground using a variety of methods / predict the effects of construction on the built environment and assess potential damage

Social Multi-Criteria Evaluation for a Sustainable Economy
The real world is characterized by deep complexity. May be a rather unremarkable observation, yet it has important implications on the manner policy problems are represented and decision-making is framed. Is contemporary democracy compatible with science in real-world policy-making? This book gives answers in the affirmative. It also asserts that this congruence can have positive implications not only in terms of economic prosperity but also when dealing with the difficult sustainability policy problems of our millennium. To address contemporary issues economic science will have to expand its empirical relevance by introducing more and more realistic assumptions to its models. One of the most interesting research orientations in recent times in the field of public economics is the explicit attempt to take account of political constraints, interest groups and collusion effects. One of the main novelties of this book is its establishment of a clear relationship between social and public choice theories on one hand, and multiple criteria decision analysis on the other.
Social Computing, Behavioral Modeling, and Prediction
Social computing concerns the study of social behavior and context based on computational systems. Behavioral modeling reproduces the social behavior, and allows for experimenting, scenario planning, and deep understanding of behavior, patterns, and potential outcomes. The pervasive use of computer and Internet technologies creates an unprecedented environment where people can share opinions and experiences, exchange ideas, offer suggestions and advice, debate and even conduct experiments. Social computing facilitates behavioral modeling in model building, analysis, pattern mining, anticipation, and prediction. This volume presents material from the first interdisciplinary workshop focused on employing social computing for behavioral modeling and prediction. The book provides a platform for disseminating results and developing new concepts and methodologies aimed at advancing and deepening our understanding of social and behavioral computing to aid critical decision making. The contributions incorporate views from government, industry and academia and they address research problems arising from pressing demands in the real world.
Slopes and Excavations : Design and Calculation
Approaches the problems of slopes and excavations with technical knowledge and helps to better control the dangers and thus prevent damage to the population. Embankments as sloping earth surfaces occur everywhere. They are more or less worked by man, thus altering their natural state. Thus one should the effects of these changes and to be sure about the safety of the slopes. Only with this knowledge changes should be carried out in order to be able to assess their impact on people and the surrounding area. Excavation pits are being placed deeper and and closer to neighboring structures, and must therefore be handled by engineers.

Singular Sets of Minimizers for the Mumford-Shah Functional
Studies regularity properties of Mumford-Shah minimizers. The Mumford-Shah functional was introduced in the 1980s as a tool for automatic image segmentation, but its study gave rise to many interesting questions of analysis and geometric measure theory. The main object under scrutiny is a free boundary K where the minimizer may have jumps. The book presents an extensive description of the known regularity properties of the singular sets K, and the techniques to get them. Some time is spent on the C^1 regularity theorem (with an essentially unpublished proof in dimension 2), but a good part of the book is devoted to applications of A. Bonnet's monotonicity and blow-up techniques. In particular, global minimizers in the plane are studied in full detail.
Sindrome Coronarica Acuta, un nuovo modo di fare diagnosi, un nuovo modo di impostare la terapia = Acute Coronary Syndrome : Anew way of diagnosing and setting therapy
Aims to provide the reader with a concise yet comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the issue of acute coronary syndrome, in light of the enormous body of literature published on the subject over the past decade. Introduction to the concepts of electrocardiography and histophysiopathology, the nosological reclassification of acute coronary disease resulting from the introduction of new myocardial necrosis markers into clinical practice is addressed. It also emphasizes the need for physicians to assess the intrinsic risk of the disease by calculating specific scores proposed by clinical studies. Based on these new concepts, the various therapeutic approaches that should be implemented are analyzed, including both purely pharmacological and more "aggressive" approaches in terms of effectiveness. Ample space is therefore given to the use of new antithrombotic treatments and the choice between pharmacological therapy and invasive approaches using coronary angiography and angioplasty. a crossroads that sometimes puts the doctor in difficulty, but which can imply, if the options are faced rationally, a radical change in the patient's destiny.

Practitioners will find the book useful for practical issues such as the applicability of simulation methods, their reproducibility, and output interpretation.
Short-Wave Solar Radiation in the Earths Atmosphere : Calculation, Observation, Interpretation
Based on data from an experiment which ran for ten years, this book summarizes the results of the Atmospheric Physics Department of the St. Petersburg University and the Main Geophysical Observatory. The processed data now forms a rich dataset of spectral values of radiative characteristics under different atmospheric conditions. The analysis of this database clearly shows that the solar radiative absorption in a dusty and cloudy atmosphere is significantly higher than assumed to date. Both graduate students of atmospheric sciences as well as scientists and researchers in the field of meteorology and climatology will find a wealth of new data and information in this monograph.
