Supernovae : and How to Observe Them
Supernovae mark the deaths of massive stars or of white dwarfs in binary systems. Even when they occur in galaxies millions of light years away they can be within the reach of amateur astronomers’ telescopes, this book is a mine of information for all levels of amateur astronomer.
Superlinear Parabolic Problems : Blow-up, Global Existence and Steady States
This book is devoted to the qualitative study of solutions of superlinear elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations and systems. This class of problems contains, in particular, a number of reaction-diffusion systems which arise in various mathematical models, especially in chemistry, physics and biology.Although the techniques introduced in the first two chapters provide efficient tools to attack some aspects of these problems, they often display new phenomena and specifically different behaviors, whose study requires new ideas.
Superior Beings. If They Exist, How Would We Know? : Game-Theoretic Implications of Omnipotence, Omniscience, Immortality, and Incomprehensibility
The book shows how game theory can help breathe life into questions that have been dismissed too quickly simply because they are metaphysical--outside the world of experience. Thereby he clarifies the structure of our thought about an ultimate reality, whether or not it is viewed as religious.
Superconductivity in Complex Systems
In this volume of the Springer Series “Structure and Bonding” superconductivity in unconventional systems is reviewed with emphasis on cuprate supercon-ductors, however one additional contribution to the superconductivity of alka-li-doped fullerides A3C60has also been included. Even though in this latter com-pound the evidence for phonon mediated pairing is well manifested, the prob-lem to be solved lies in the fact that the Coulomb repulsion is of the same orderof magnitude as the vibronic energy, whereas the A2C60and A4C60 are insula-tors, the A3C60is a superconductor. Treating both energy scales on the samefooting, an interesting interplay between Coulomb and phonon contributionsresults which enables electron (hole) pairing locally.
Superconductivity ; Vol.1 : Conventional and Unconventional Superconductors ; Vol.2 : Novel Superconductors
Conceived as the definitive reference in a classic and important field of modern physics, this extensive and comprehensive handbook systematically reviews the basic physics, theory and recent advances in the field of superconductivity. Leading researchers, including Nobel laureates, describe the state-of-the-art in conventional and unconventional superconductors at a particularly opportune time, as new experimental techniques and field-theoretical methods have emerged. In addition to full-coverage of novel materials and underlying mechanisms, the handbook reflects continued intense research into electron-phone based superconductivity. Considerable attention is devoted to high-Tc superconductivity, novel superconductivity, including triplet pairing in the ruthenates, novel superconductors, such as heavy-Fermion metals and organic materials, and also granular superconductors.
Sunlight, Vitamin D and Skin Cancer
Represents the most important risk factor for the development of nonmelanoma skin cancer. Additionally, assessment of sun exposure parameters has consistently shown an association between the development of malignant melanoma and short term, intense UV exposure, particularly burning in childhood. As a consequence, protection of the skin from UV exposure is an integral part of skin cancer prevention programs. However, more chronic, less intense UV exposure has not been found to be a risk factor for melanoma and in fact has been found in some studies to be protective. Moreover, 90% of all requisite vitamin D is formed within the skin through the action of the sun—a serious problem—for a connection between vitamin D deficiency and various types of cancer (e. g. , colon, prostate and breast cancers) has been demonstrated in a large number of studies. Hence, the - sociation between vitamin D deficiency and various internal malignancies has now opened a debate among dermatologists and other clinicians how to balance between positive and negative effects of solar and artificial UV exposure. The goal of this volume is to provide a comprehensive, highly readable overview of our present knowledge of positive and negative effects of UV exposure, with a focus on vitamin D and skin cancer.

This book is designed to be a comprehensive resource on sulfur in phototrophic organisms for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, beginning researchers and teachers in the area of photosynthesis, bacterial energy metabolism, biotechnology, plant nutrition, plant production and plant molecular physiology.
Sulfur Assimilation and Abiotic Stress in Plants
Sulfur is one of the four major essential elements necessary for the plant life cycle. Its assimilation in higher plants and its reduction in metabolically important sulfur compounds are crucial factors determining plant growth and vigor and resistance to stresses. The range of biological compounds that contain sulfur is wide. The information on sulfur assimilation can be exploited in tailoring for efficient sulfur utilization, and in the applied approaches for the sustenance of agricultural productivity through nutritional improvement and increased stress tolerance. The present book discusses the aspects of sustainable crop production with sulfur, the importance of sulfur metabolites and sulfur metabolizing enzymes in abiotic stress management in plants.
Suites de Sturm, indice de Maslov et périodicité de Bott = Sturm sequences, Maslov index and Bott periodicity
The classical theory of Sturm sequences provides an algorithm to determine the number of roots of a polynomial with real coefficients contained in a given interval. The main object of this thesis is to show that an adequate generalization of the theory of Sturm sequences provides among other things: a notion of Maslov index for an algebraic loop of Lagrangians defined on a commutative ring ; a proof of the fundamental theorem of Hermitian (algebraic) K-theory, theorem due to M. Karoubi ; a proof of Bott's periodicity theorems (topological), in the spirit of the work of F. Latour ; a symplectic-linear computation of the relative group K2 for all commutative rings, in the spirit of the work of R. Sharpe. The book is as far as possible "self-contained" and elementary: it essentially implements linear or bilinear algebra arguments. It presents a unified approach to the Maslov index in terms of Sturm sequences and quadratic forms.
Sugar substitute stevia
Added sugars are a controversial and hotly debated topic. Consumption of added sugars has been implicated in increased risk of a variety of chronic diseases including obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as well as cognitive decline and even some cancers. Stevia is a naturally sourced, zero-calorie sweetener that has been used as a natural sugar substitute and flavoring ingredient for hundreds of years...

Substructuring Method for Civil Structural Health Monitoring
Investigates the substructuring technology in structural health monitoring (SHM) to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the present SHM methods. SHM has been developed for monitoring, evaluation, and maintenance of civil structures. As the civil structures are usually large scale and a large number of sensors are deployed on a structure, accurate evaluation and maintenance of civil structures are always time-consuming. The book establishes a fundamental framework of substructuring method for the fast analysis of finite element (FE) model and monitoring data. Several practical civil structures are used for illustration.

This is particularly critical when process feature sizes scale down to the nano meter range.
Substance abuse and addiction
Illicit drug abuse has reached an epidemic level in the world. Drug overdose has become the leading cause of injury-related deaths since 2008 due to the recent surge of opioid overdose by heroin, controlled prescription drugs, and normethadones synthetic opioids. Synthetic designer drugs such as synthetic cathinone (“bath salts”) and synthetic cannabinoids (“Spice” and “K2”) continue to emerge and attract recreational users. This research is going to tackle drug abuse by shedding the light on Syrian prisoners Over the past 20 years or so, the drug misuse scenario has seen the emergence of both prescription-only and over-the-counter medications being reported as ingested for recreational purposes.
