Lake Victoria : Ecology, Resources, Environment

Recently, there has been, and continues to be, a tremendous interest on Lake Victoria and its environs, both locally and internationally. A casual browsing on the Internet indicates that the entries on the Lake have been rising phenomenally. At the same time, the issues discussed are as diverse as they are varied in their treatment of the subject, both in terms of depth and comprehensiveness. The information on Lake Victoria and its environ is scattered, isolated, and sometimes confusing even though documentation on the subject are available. Despite this situation, the fact remains that various people (e. g. , secondary and universitystudents, researchers, practitioners, etc. ,)wouldliketoaccess and know more about the Lake and its environs. Aware of the existing information gap about this world’s second largest fresh water Lake, this book is intended to provide readers with up-to-date information pertaining the Lake. The book gives an in-depth coverage of environmental issues, - source endowment, poverty amidst plenty, development opportunities, challenges and other related issues facing the Lake and its environs. It aims at providing information on the above variables, which hopefully will address the needs of various users.

Comprehensive mathematics for computer scientists 2 : Calculus and ODEs, splines, probability, fourier and wavelet theory, fractals and neural networks, categories and lambda calculus

This second volume of a comprehensive tour through mathematical core subjects for computer scientists completes the first volume in two - gards: Part III first adds topology, di?erential, and integral calculus to the t- ics of sets, graphs, algebra, formal logic, machines, and linear geometry, of volume 1. With this spectrum of fundamentals in mathematical e- cation, young professionals should be able to successfully attack more involved subjects, which may be relevant to the computational sciences. In a second regard, the end of part III and part IV add a selection of more advanced topics. In view of the overwhelming variety of mathematical approaches in the computational sciences, any selection, even the most empirical, requires a methodological justi?cation. Our primary criterion has been the search for harmonization and optimization of thematic - versity and logical coherence. This is why we have, for instance, bundled such seemingly distant subjects as recursive constructions, ordinary d- ferential equations, and fractals under the unifying perspective of c- traction theory.

Complex Variables with Applications

Complex numbers can be viewed in several ways: as an element in a field, as a point in the plane, and as a two-dimensional vector. Examined properly, each perspective provides crucial insight into the interrelations between the complex number system and its parent, the real number system. It explore these relationships by adopting both generalization and specialization methods to move from real variables to complex variables, and vice versa, while simultaneously examining their analytic and geometric characteristics, using geometry to illustrate analytic concepts and employing analysis to unravel geometric notions. The engaging exposition is replete with discussions, remarks, questions, and exercises, motivating not only understanding on the part of the reader, but also developing the tools needed to think critically about mathematical problems. This focus involves a careful examination of the methods and assumptions underlying various alternative routes that lead to the same destination.

Complex Analysis with Applications to Number Theory

The book discusses major topics in complex analysis with applications to number theory. It 's including the theory of several finitely and infinitely complex variables, hyperbolic geometry, two- and three-manifolds, and number theory. In addition to solved examples and problems, the book covers most topics of current interest, such as Cauchy theorems, Picard’s theorems, Riemann–Zeta function, Dirichlet theorem, Gamma function, and harmonic functions.

Complex Analysis : In the Spirit of Lipman Bers

In this book, the main focus is the theory of complex-valued functions of a single complex variable. This theory is a prerequisite for the study of many current and rapidly developing areas of mathematics including the theory of several and infinitely many complex variables, the theory of groups, hyperbolic geometry and three-manifolds, and number theory.

Comparative genomics ; RECOMB 2007, International Workshop, RECOMB-CG 2007, San Diego, CA, USA, September 16-18, 2007, Proceedings

This book provides an evolutionary conceptual framework for comparative genomics, with the ultimate objective of understanding the loss and gain of genes during evolution, the interactions among gene products, and the relationship between genotype, phenotype and the environment. The many examples in the book have been carefully chosen from primary research literature based on two criteria: their biological insight and their pedagogical merit. The phylogeny-based comparative methods, involving both continuous and discrete variables, often represent a stumbling block for many students entering the field of comparative genomics. They are numerically illustrated and explained in great detail.

Classification and Learning Using Genetic Algorithms : Applications in Bioinformatics and Web Intelligence

This book provides a unified framework that describes how genetic learning can be used to design pattern recognition and learning systems. The book is unique in the sense of describing how a search technique, the genetic algorithm, can be used for pattern classification mainly through approximating decision boundaries, and it demonstrates the effectiveness of the genetic classifiers vis-à-vis several widely used classifiers, including neural networks. It provides a balanced mixture of theories, algorithms and applications, and in particular results from the bioinformatics and Web intelligence domains.

Calculus of one variable

Aimed at first-year undergraduates in mathematics and the physical sciences, the only prerequisites are basic algebra, coordinate geometry and the beginnings of differentiation as covered in school. The transition from school to university mathematics is addressed by means of a systematic development of important classes of techniques, and through careful discussion of the basic definitions and some of the theorems of calculus, with proofs where appropriate, but stopping short of the rigour involved in Real Analysis. The influence of technology on the learning and teaching of mathematics is recognised through the use of the computer algebra and graphical package MAPLE to illustrate many of the ideas.

Branch-and-Bound Applications in Combinatorial Data Analysis

There are a variety of combinatorial optimization problems that are relevant to the examination of statistical data. Combinatorial problems arise in the clustering of a collection of objects, the seriation (sequencing or ordering) of objects, and the selection of variables for subsequent multivariate statistical analysis such as regression. The options for choosing a solution strategy in combinatorial data analysis can be overwhelming. Because some problems are too large or intractable for an optimal solution strategy, many researchers develop an over-reliance on heuristic methods to solve all combinatorial problems. However, with increasingly accessible computer power and ever-improving methodologies, optimal solution strategies have gained popularity for their ability to reduce unnecessary uncertainty. In this monograph, optimality is attained for nontrivially sized problems via the branch-and-bound paradigm.

Bioenergetics : Energy conservation and conversion

The present book addresses fundamental questions of biological energy transformation and conservation, with a focus on those processes which can now be understood on a structural basis.Current knowledge of selected examples of the biological energy conservation machinery such as cellular oxygen respiration, light-driven energy converters, and fermentation is reviewed. The machinery is highly variable, particularly that within microorganisms, but all of these devices universally rely on one unique underlying physico-chemical principle. The book is a rich source for specialists interested in recent developments in bioenergetics research and novices in the field alike.
