Handbook of Social Movements Across Disciplines

Researchers and students from divergent academic disciplines share an interest in the study of social movements and collective action. Through a variety of disciplinary approaches and techniques, researchers seek to understand the emergence and development of collective action. In the last few decades, the field of social-movements-studies has proliferated enormously, covering a wide array of movements, issues and places. With this growth, social movement scholars have criticized the traditional vision of collective mobilization as the results of irrational behavior and have instead developed a range of new approaches. The expansion of the field has also led to increased theoretical debates and attempts to synthesize the different perspectives. With this in mind, this seminal volume revisits the disciplinary roots of social movement studies. Each discipline raises its own questions and approaches the subject from a different perspective. This volume combines these divergent perspectives into one cohesive, comprehensive work.

Hamiltonian dynamical systems and applications

This volume is the collected and extended notes from the lectures on Hamiltonian dynamical systems and their applications that were given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute in Montreal in 2007. Many aspects of the modern theory of the subject were covered at this event, including low dimensional problems as well as the theory of Hamiltonian systems in infinite dimensional phase space; these are described in depth in this volume. Applications are also presented to several important areas of research, including problems in classical mechanics, continuum mechanics, and partial differential equations. These lecture notes cover many areas of recent mathematical progress in this field, including the new choreographies of many body orbits, the development of rigorous averaging methods which give hope for realistic long time stability results, the development of KAM theory for partial differential equations in one and in higher dimensions, and the new developments in the long outstanding problem of Arnold diffusion.
