Welcome to the proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing and Applications (ISPA2004) which was held in Hong Kong, China, 13–15 December, 2004. With the advance of computer networks and hardware technology, parallel and distributed processing has become a key technology which plays an imp- tant part in determining future research and development activities in many academic and industrial branches. It provides a means to solve computati- ally intensive problems by improving processing speed. It is also the only - able approach to building highly reliable and inherently distributed applications. ISPA2004 provided a forum for scientists and engineers in academia and indsttry to exchange and discuss their experiences, new ideas, research results, and applications about all aspects of parallel and distributed computing. There was a very large number of paper submissions (361) from 26 countries and regions, including not only Asia and the Pacific, but also Europe and North America. All submissions were reviewed by at least three program or technical committee members or external reviewers. It was extremely di?cult to select the presentations for the conference because there were so many excellent and interesting submissions.

Optimal Control of Wind Energy Systems : Towards a Global Approach
Presents a thoroughgoing review of the main control issues in wind power generation, offering a unified picture of the issues in optimal control of wind power generation. A series of optimal control techniques are analyzed, assessed and compared, starting with the classical ones, like PI control, maximum power point strategies and gain-scheduling techniques, and continuing with some modern ones: sliding-mode techniques, feedback linearization control and robust control. Discussion is focused on a global dynamic optimization approach to wind power systems using a set of optimization criteria which comply with a comprehensive group of requirements including: energy conversion efficiency; mechanical reliability; and quality of the energy provided.

Seemingly simple and harmless, they nevertheless hide some of the most difficult and exciting mysteries of the whole of mathematics. Cryptography, on the other hand, is concerned with hiding the content of confidential communications from prying eyes and corresponds to widespread needs in our society. The Theory of Numbers can help Cryptography in these needs, thanks to the mysteries that still surround it. The text gives an account of this link. It first introduces Modern Cryptography, its goals and priorities. He then goes on to expose arguments of Number Theory, with particular reference to the two problems of recognizing prime numbers, and of decomposing a natural into its prime factors; for each of the two issues it provides a vast panorama of the algorithms that deal with it and try to solve it as effectively as possible. In particular, it presents the very recent AKS procedure for recognizing prime numbers. The book then returns to Cryptography and shows how ideas and methods of Number Theory apply to the construction of reliable procedures for the secure transmission of confidential information.
