Image Analysis, Sediments and Paleoenvironments
This seventh volume of the DPER series examines imaging techniques for sedimentologists, paleolimnologists, paleoceanographers and microscopists working on issues related to paleoenvironmental reconstruction. It will help the researcher or graduate student to understand every step involved in the imaging process, from image acquisition to measurements.nbsp; Procedures are described to ensure that the right protocols and methodology are selected to solve a particular issue, and to evaluate the validity of scientific results. Case studies illustrate the wide range of information that can be obtained from many kinds of sediments (marine, lacustrine and aeolian) and different types of samples (cores, embedded blocks, microscopic slides) using different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum (visible, UV, IR, X-ray). The volume provides comprehensive protocols, guidelines, and recommendations for the use of low cost image analysis techniques, to facilitate intercomparisons of measurements.

ICIAR 2006, the International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition, was the third ICIAR conference, and was held in P´ ovoa de Varzim, Portugal. ICIARisorganizedannually,andalternatesbetweenEuropeandNorthAmerica. ICIAR 2004 was held in Porto, Portugal and ICIAR 2005 in Toronto, Canada. The idea of o?ering these conferences came as a result of discussion between researchers in Portugal and Canada to encourage collaboration and exchange, mainlybetweenthesetwocountries,butalsowiththeopenparticipationofother countries, addressing recent advances in theory, methodology and applications. The response to the call for papers for ICIAR 2006 was higher than the two previous editions. From 389 full papers submitted, 163 were ?nally accepted (71 oral presentations, and 92 posters). The review process was carried out by the Program Committee members and other reviewers; all are experts in various image analysis and recognition areas. Each paper was reviewed by at least two reviewers, and also checked by the conference Co-chairs. The high quality of the papers in these proceedings is attributed ?rst to the authors, and second to the quality of the reviews provided by the experts.

Mechanical occlusion of the small intestine is a frequently encountered clinical problem, whose clinical-instrumental management is made difficult by the complexity of the mechanisms responsible for the occlusive picture. The role of the radiologist is to promptly guide the therapeutic process on the basis of a correct interpretation of the iconographic pictures. The purpose of this volume - the only one of its kind - is to relate the pathophysiology of occlusion to imaging. The rich iconography, which ranges from clinical onset to resolution, emphasizes the role of multidetector computed tomography with intravenous contrast, which is the current gold standard. However, the correlations with the echo-radiographic methods are not forgotten, which retain an effective diagnostic role, with a low biological and economic cost. The mechanical ileus of the small intestine is a striking example in support of the dream of many professionals: that, that is, to have a figure of a fine abdominal emergency radiologist, an expert in organ and disease and not only in the machine, as often unfortunately it happens.

Il Parlagioco nasce da un'esperienza riabilitativa con un bambino autistico, il cui linguaggio aveva bisogno di regole comunicative. Per questo è stato creato un gioco di carte per realizzare uno scambio interattivo attraverso il desiderio di comunicare giocando. Il Parlagioco è servito anche a ridurre l'iperselettività tipica dell'autismo, orientando l'attenzione del bambino verso gli elementi esaustivi, ignorando i dettagli insignificanti allo scopo di cogliere i nessi di un insieme necessari a una comprensione globale. Da questa esperienza il Parlagioco è stato ulteriormente sviluppato per promuovere la pragmatica della comunicazione e le regole del linguaggio in ambito clinico. La sua applicazione nei disturbi specifici del linguaggio permette di ampliare il lessico, la comprensione di nuovi vocaboli e la produzione di richieste. Quando il disturbo del linguaggio è invece associato a ritardo mentale nelle malattie genetiche o neurologiche, esso consente delle facilitazioni nel proporre compiti specifici di riabilitazione linguistica. La presentazione grafica allettante e la proposta ludica fannno si' che esso sia facilmente applicabile anche in ambito scolastico e familiare.

This volume, dedicated to medical students who live the exciting moment of initiation into the medical profession, is structured in eleven didactic modules, which are developed according to the typical sequence of problem solving revised in the light of the EBM method (presentation of problem, formulation and testing of hypotheses, formulation of clinical and background questions, comparison with international literature, answer to questions, application to the clinical case and possible formulation of recommendations for practice, case management). Linked to them are eight in-depth analyzes structured as compendia of evidence (Evidence compendia, in the style of Clinical Evidence), in which a series of background questions relating to complex pathologies, of high prevalence and of considerable interest for the hospital internist and of the territory. Ifo Survey Data in Business Cycle and Monetary Policy Analysis
The business surveys of the Ifo Institute (short for Information and Forschung) are internationally renowned. Every month close to 7,000 enterprises are questioned on their short-term planning and their appraisals of the actual and future business situation. The confidence indicator frequently referred to as the Ifo Business Climate Index is derived from the responses to this Ifo Business Survey. While the Index attracts a lot of attention by practitioners (especially financial market analysts), the use and empirical exploitation of this and other components of Ifo business surveys is – amongst academics – still relatively scarce. The present volume, based on a conference entitled "The Academic Use of Ifo Survey Data", gives examples of timely research questions which can be addressed by qualitative survey data like the monthly Ifo Business Survey. It shows that this type of real-time data can be very informative when it comes to forecasting real economic activity or exploring monetary policy transmission.
