Progress in Ultrafast Intense Laser Science III

The PUILS series presents Progress in Ultrafast Intense Laser Science, a newly emerging interdisciplinary research field spanning atomic and molecular physics, molecular science, and optical science. PUILS has been stimulated by the recent development of ultrafast laser technologies. Each volume contains approximately 15 chapters, authored by researchers at the forefront. Each chapter opens with an overview of the topics to be discussed, so that researchers, who are not experts in the specific topics, as well as graduate students can grasp the importance and attractions of this sub-field of research, and these are followed by reports of cutting-edge discoveries. This third volume covers a diverse range of disciplines, focusing on such topics as strong field ionization of atoms, ionization and fragmentation of molecules and clusters, generation of high-order harmonics and attosecond pulses, filamentation and laser plasma interaction, and the development of ultrashort and ultrahigh-intensity light sources.

Principles of management : Efficiency and effectiveness in the private and public sector

Shows an overview of how the activities of an organisation can be managed to satisfy the needs of stakeholders through the cost effective, operationally efficient and sustainable transformation of resources into outputs. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the authors show the relationship between management and economics and within this framework present the key areas of management activity. Also explains the connections between these areas and provides tools and instruments for successful management. The book's approach and content is relevant for all kinds of organisation - private or public sector, service or manufacturing, non-profit, large or small.

Power, Freedom, and Voting

Power, Freedom, and Voting is an interdisciplinary book that presents a comprehensive insight into current research by economists, mathematicians, philosophers and political scientists on three intimately related concepts that are at the heart of theories of democracy and social welfare. The editors have brought together some of the leading scholars in the different fields to create a distinctive volume. Chapters include contributions on foundational and methodological issues in the definition and measurement of power and freedom and empirical studies of power and coalition formation in voting bodies. The volume also contains contributions that make an effort to bridge the gaps between different disciplinary approaches, including one on the importance of Machiavelli’s writing as a reference point for modern political theory, and others on the related concepts of fairness and responsibility. A majority of the chapters make use of game theory.

Pollution of the Sea : Prevention and Compensation

In May 2005, the International Max Planck Research School for Maritime Affairs organized an international conference addressing marine pollution. At the conf- ence venue, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, academics and practitioners debated recent developments from an interdisciplinary perspective. The papers shed light upon ecological aspects, upon the efforts of the international community to prevent and combat marine pollution by appropriate institutions and regulations, and upon the compensation of losses which have occurred despite those efforts. The present volume collects the papers of the conference and at the same time conveys an impression of the diversity of subjects discussed in the International Max Planck Research School for Maritime Affairs.

Political Economy, Linguistics and Culture : Crossing Bridges

During the late 19th and throughout the 20th century, social sciences in general and economics in particular have undergone enormous progress. This has led to something of an embarrassment of riches. While certain topics have been fully researched to the point where the marginal benefit from further research is approaching zero, others have remained largely under-researched or were being ignored altogether. It is this discrepancy which prompted the research paradigm of “Crossing Bridges”. For this volume, ten authors have joined forces to address the problem of under-researched topics, focussing in particular on gaps in interdisciplinary research between economics and other social sciences such as linguistics, art and cultural history. Making use of interdisciplinary methods and approaches, the book makes a case for stronger bonds between the different fields of social science.

Plasticity in the Visual System : From Genes to Circuits

Plasticity is the basis for learning, memory formation and cognition, and the adaptability it affords is essential for normal day-to-day functioning. Many diseases of brain functioning can be described as, or affect, plasticity mechanisms. The goal of Plasticity in the Visual System: From Genes to Circuits is to assemble and integrate the various levels of analysis required to approach a more complete picture of plasticity in the visual system. Researchers with backgrounds varying from systems neuroscience to molecular biology present a coherent picture of visual system plasticity, in which an array of genetic and molecular processes becomes linked with changes in neuronal connectivity, physiological changes, and ultimately, learning behavior. Because of its interdisciplinary view on plasticity, this book will appeal to the wide neuroscience community.
