Talking faces : Audio driven talking faces

Talking face generation aims to synthesize a sequence of face images and voices of characters corresponding to their identities, it can serve several solutions; such as voice tone, facial expression, with a good lip synchronization. Therefore, we propose virtual news anchor based on real news anchor called Brooke Baldwin, which reads the texts by itself, reports tirelessly 24/7 for anyone in the world. Several methods and algorithms applied in this project using the dataset to simulate the voice, personalize facial expression and natural head poses to present a life-like image instead of a cold robot. Transfer learning and fine-tuning approaches used to serve this project by taking pre-trained models over LRW (Lip reading in the wild) dataset and fine-tune them to achieve our goal.

Synthesis, Properties and Applications of Ultrananocrystalline Diamond ; Proceedings of the NATO ARW on Synthesis, Properties and Applications of Ultrananocrystalline Diamond, St. Petersburg, Russia, from 7 to 10 June 2004.

There are two forms of UNCD, dispersed particles and films. The two communities of researchers working on these two forms of UNCD have hitherto lacked a common forum in which to explore areas of scientific and technological overlap. As a consequence, the two fields have up to now developed independently of each other. The time had clearly come to remedy this situation in order to be able to take full advantage of the enormous potential for societal benefits to be derived from exploiting the synergistic relationships between UNCD dispersed particulates and UNCD films. The NATO sponsored ARW therefore occurred in a very timely manner and was successful in beginning the desired dialogue, a precondition for making progress toward the above stated goal. The discovery of UNCD completes a triadof nanostructured carbonswhich includes fullerenes and nanotubes.

Sutureless anastomoses : Secrets for Success

When doctors first look at sutureless anastomosis devices created by new technologies, the most frequent comment is how amazingly easy it is to create a vascular anastomosis and, as a direct consequence, they believe anybody could play the role of the cardiovascular surgeon. Pessimistic c- diovascular surgeons, on their side, think that creating a machine capable of perfectly reproducing their core activity, which consists in making an- tomosis, will kill their profession.This specialty’s claimed collapse has generally been attributed to recent advantages in percutaneous procedures and devices that give the oppor- nity to non-surgeon doctors to accomplish the surgeon’s work. The reality is different. Data suggest that cardiac surgery continues to survive and has not suffered the precipitous decline that was predicted.

Sustainable Use of Forest Biomass for Energy : A Synthesis with Focus on the Baltic and Nordic Region

With the large-scale utilization of forest biomass for energy still in its infancy, there is an urgent need to understand the short- and long-term consequences of intensive forest biomass harvesting - both on the forest ecosystem and on forest economics. Sustainable Use of Forest Biomass for Energy draws on the vast body of knowledge of forest ecology and management in the Nordic-Baltic region, with the aim of bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and general principles on the one hand, and more concrete practical forest management and policy development on the other. The focus on the Nordic and Baltic countries makes it possible to compare two groups of countries in Europe which have similar ecological conditions, but substantial differences in both their economic frameworks and, consequently, their need to overcome barriers to increased use of forest biomass for energy.

Sustainable Resource Use and Economic Dynamics

Pollution of the environment increased while the stock of worldwide natural resources declined. Consequently, the concern that environmental restrictions, especially the bounded supply of natural resources end energies, will limit economic development in the long run is widespread. Most prominently, it has been expressed in the prediction of ‘limits to growth’ by the Club of Rome in the 1970s. Today, the notion of ‘sustainable growth’ is widely accepted as a main principle in the theoretical and political discussion. But a general consensus on the consequences for the use of natural capital has still to be established. This holds true not only for economics, but also for interdisciplinary research programs and the public debate.

Sustainable Living with Environmental Risks

Modern economic development has accelerated environmental pollution, caused loss of natural habitats, and modified landscapes. These environmental changes have impacted natural systems: water and heat circulation, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity. These changes in natural systems degrade ecosystem services and subsequently increase environmental risks for humans. Environmental risks, therefore, are not only human health risks by pollution, climatic anomalies, and natural disasters, but also degradation of ecosystem services on which most people are relying for their lives. We cannot entirely eliminate the risks, because it is not possible to attain zero impact on the environment, but we need to find a mechanism that minimizes environmental risks for human sustainably. This is the idea of the interdisciplinary framework of “environmental risk management” theory, which advocates harmony between economic development and environmental conservation.

Survie des patients atteints de cancer en France = Survival of cancer patients in France

The Francim network brings together all the French cancer registries. It has set up an observatory for cancerous pathologies in France, the purpose of which is to provide the community with epidemiological indicators useful for the knowledge and management of this pathology, in conjunction with various institutional partners. A first output of this observatory was to provide estimates of the incidence of cancer in France in 2000. Its second output is reported in this work, and concerns the survival of cancer patients, as it could be estimated. from all cancer cases recorded from 1989 to 1997 in 20 French departmental registers. To achieve these objectives, the network joined forces with the biostatistics service of the civil hospices of Lyon, which provided statistical analysis of the data collected by the various registers. The procedures that have been put in place for the different phases of this work can be implemented on a regular basis, for subsequent estimates. They also lend themselves to the implementation of more in-depth studies that are necessary for certain cancers. These so-called “population” data usefully complement the results of studies carried out in the field of clinical research. An additional tool for epidemiological cancer surveillance is therefore now available in France, thanks to the support of the National Cancer League.

There are two dim- sions to be taken into account to understand the structure of this book. The first is concerned with a sequential perspective. Given that 9/11 has provided a critical momentum in this area, chapter 2 deals with the international position prior to 9/11, whereas chapters 3, 4 and 5 analyse development following 9/11. The s- ond is related to a hard law and soft law perspective.

Supply Chain Management on Demand : Strategies and Technologies, Applications

New techniques and practices for highly efficient supply chain management are being made possible by the rapid progress in information and communication technologies, laying the foundation for a new wave of applications. Connectivity and the integration of business processes have laid the foundations for an increased visibility over the entire supply chain. Software technologies like portals, data warehouses, reporting systems, and on-line analytical processing (OLAP) are providing the necessary information and visibility for the decision makers. The next step is to assist the decision maker to quickly and optimally respond to unexpected situations. Intelligent analytics can automatically determine the best decision alternative and predict its consequence on the supply chain performance. We use the phrase "sense and respond" to characterize such a supply chain management system that is able to respond quickly and optimally to unexpected situations.

Superplumes : Beyond Plate Tectonics

Provides a concise overview of our understanding of the entire mantle, its evolution since early differentiation and the consequences of superplumes for earth surface processes. The balanced, international authorship of the 18 contributions has produced a state-of-the-science report on the emerging concept of superplumes and has documented the potential of superplumes to serve as a testable model for future studies.The topic of superplume dynamics has been treated from different angles covering the sub-disciplines of geology, geochemistry, petrology as well as geophysics (including mineral physics, seismic tomography and mantle dynamics). For instance, it is shown how transport of heat via superplumes, huge stable pipes connecting the high-temperature core with the surface land mass, could have caused mass extinctions and drastic environmental change.

Sunlight, Vitamin D and Skin Cancer

Represents the most important risk factor for the development of nonmelanoma skin cancer. Additionally, assessment of sun exposure parameters has consistently shown an association between the development of malignant melanoma and short term, intense UV exposure, particularly burning in childhood. As a consequence, protection of the skin from UV exposure is an integral part of skin cancer prevention programs. However, more chronic, less intense UV exposure has not been found to be a risk factor for melanoma and in fact has been found in some studies to be protective. Moreover, 90% of all requisite vitamin D is formed within the skin through the action of the sun—a serious problem—for a connection between vitamin D deficiency and various types of cancer (e. g. , colon, prostate and breast cancers) has been demonstrated in a large number of studies. Hence, the - sociation between vitamin D deficiency and various internal malignancies has now opened a debate among dermatologists and other clinicians how to balance between positive and negative effects of solar and artificial UV exposure. The goal of this volume is to provide a comprehensive, highly readable overview of our present knowledge of positive and negative effects of UV exposure, with a focus on vitamin D and skin cancer.

Suites de Sturm, indice de Maslov et périodicité de Bott = Sturm sequences, Maslov index and Bott periodicity

The classical theory of Sturm sequences provides an algorithm to determine the number of roots of a polynomial with real coefficients contained in a given interval. The main object of this thesis is to show that an adequate generalization of the theory of Sturm sequences provides among other things: a notion of Maslov index for an algebraic loop of Lagrangians defined on a commutative ring ; a proof of the fundamental theorem of Hermitian (algebraic) K-theory, theorem due to M. Karoubi ; a proof of Bott's periodicity theorems (topological), in the spirit of the work of F. Latour ; a symplectic-linear computation of the relative group K2 for all commutative rings, in the spirit of the work of R. Sharpe. The book is as far as possible "self-contained" and elementary: it essentially implements linear or bilinear algebra arguments. It presents a unified approach to the Maslov index in terms of Sturm sequences and quadratic forms.

Studying Human Populations : An Advanced Course in Statistics

Studying Human Populations is a textbook for graduate students and research workers in social statistics and related subject areas. It follows a novel curriculum developed around the basic statistical activities of sampling, measurement and inference. Statistics is defined broadly as making decisions in the presence of uncertainty that arises as a consequence of limited resources available for collecting information. A connecting link of the presented methods is the perspective of missing information, catering for a diverse class of problems that include nonresponse, imperfect measurement and causal inference. In principle, any problem too complex for our limited analytical toolkit could be converted to a tractable problem if some additional information were available. Ingenuity is called for in declaring such (missing) information constructively, but the universe of problems that we can address is wide open, not limited by a discrete set of procedures.

Strength Analysis in Geomechanics

The book presents a new approach for the solution of geomechanical problems - it explicitly takes into account deformation and fracture in time, which are neglected in classical methods although these properties create important effects. The method reveals the influence of the form of a structure on its ultimate state. It uses the rheological law which accounts for large strains at a non-linear unsteady creep, an influence of a stress state type, an initial anisotropy and damage. The whole approach takes into account five types of non-linearity (physical as well as geometrical ones) and contains several new ideas. For example, it considers the fracture as a process, the difference between the body and an element of the material which only deforms and fails because it is in the structure, the simplicity of some non-linear computations against the consequent linear ones, the dependence of the maximum strain in dangerous poins of the body only on the material.

Stream Data Management

Researchers in data management have recently recognized the importance of a new class of data-intensive applications that requires managing data streams, i.e., data composed of continuous, real-time sequence of items. Streaming applications pose new and interesting challenges for data management systems. Such application domains require queries to be evaluated continuously as opposed to the one time evaluation of a query for traditional applications. Streaming data sets grow continuously and queries must be evaluated on such unbounded data sets. These, as well as other challenges, require a major rethink of almost all aspects of traditional database management systems to support streaming applications. Stream Data Management comprises eight invited chapters by researchers active in stream data management. The collected chapters provide exposition of algorithms, languages, as well as systems proposed and implemented for managing streaming data.
