Advances in neural networks - ISNN 2006 ; Vol.3973 : 3rd International symposium on Neural Networks, ISNN 2006, Chengdu, China, May 28 - June 1, 2006, Proceedings, Part III
Constitute the Proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Neural Networks (ISNN 2006) held in Chengdu in southwestern China during May 28–31, 2006. After a successful ISNN 2004 in Dalian and ISNN 2005 in Chongqing, ISNN became a well-established series of conferences on neural computation in the region with growing popularity and improving quality. ISNN 2006 received 2472 submissions from authors in 43 countries and regions,Based on rigorous reviews, 616 high-quality papers were selected for publication in the proceedings with the acceptance rate being less than 25%. The papers are organized in 27 cohesive sections covering all major topics of neural network research and development. In addition to the numerous contributed papers, ten distinguished scholars gave plenary speeches .

The automatic analysis of images and signals in medicine, biotechnology, and chemistry is a challenging and demanding field. Signal-producing procedures by microscopes, spectrometers, and other sensors have found their way into wide fields of medicine, biotechnology, economy, and environmental analysis. With this arises the problem of the automatic mass analysis of signal information. Signal-interpreting systems which generate automatically the desired target statements from the signals are therefore of compelling necessity. The continuation of mass analyses on the basis of classical procedures leads to investments of proportions that are not feasible. New procedures and system architectures are therefore required. It was with pleasure that we hosted PAKDD 2006 in Singapore again, since the inaugural PAKDD conference was held in Singapore in 1997. PAKDD 2006 continues its tradition of providing an international forum for researchers and industry practitioners to share their new ideas, original research results and practical development experiences from all aspects of KDD data mining, including data cleaning, data warehousing, data mining techniques, knowledge visualization, and data mining applications.

In recent years, a significant interest developed regarding the problem of constructing ontologies. Of particular interest have been ontologies that could be re-used in a number of ways and could possibly be shared across diff- ent users as well as domains. The Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshops (PKAW) have a long tradition in providing a forum for researchers to exchange the latest ideas on the topic. Parti- pants come from all over the world but with a focus on the Pacific Rim region. PKAW is one of three international knowledge acquisition workshop series held in the Pacific-Rim, Canada and Europe over the last two decades. The previous Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshop, PKAW 2004, had a strong emphasis on inc- mental knowledge acquisition, machine learning, neural networks and data mining.

One of the superb characteristics of Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) is that it is an interdisciplinary ?eld in which researchers and practitioners from a number of areas are involved in a typical project. This also creates a challenge in which the success of a team depends on the participation of users and domain experts who need to interact with researchers and developers of any IDA system. All this is usually re?ected in successful projects and of course on the papers that were evaluated by this year’s program committee from which the ?nal program has been developed. In our call for papers, we solicited papers on (i) applications and tools, (ii) theory and general principles, and (iii) algorithms and techniques. We received a total of 184 papers, In the end 46 papers were accepted, which are all included in the proceedings and presented at the conference. This year’s papers re?ect the results of applied and theoretical researchfrom a number of disciplines all of which are related to the ?eld of Intelligent Data Analysis. To have the best combination of theoretical and applied research and also provide the best focus.
