Advances in Knowledge Acquisition and Management ; Pacific Rim Knowledge Acquisition Workshop, PKAW 2006, Guilin, China, August 7-8, 2006 : Revised Selected Papers
In recent years, a significant interest developed regarding the problem of constructing ontologies. Of particular interest have been ontologies that could be re-used in a number of ways and could possibly be shared across diff- ent users as well as domains. The Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshops (PKAW) have a long tradition in providing a forum for researchers to exchange the latest ideas on the topic. Parti- pants come from all over the world but with a focus on the Pacific Rim region. PKAW is one of three international knowledge acquisition workshop series held in the Pacific-Rim, Canada and Europe over the last two decades. The previous Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshop, PKAW 2004, had a strong emphasis on inc- mental knowledge acquisition, machine learning, neural networks and data mining.

Forexample, the proceeding sinclude papers withth eoretical contributions dealing with statistical approaches to sequence alignment as well as papers addressing practical problems in the areas of text classification and medical data analysis. It is reassuring to see that IDA continues to bring such diverse areas together, thus helping to cross-fertilize these fields

One of the superb characteristics of Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) is that it is an interdisciplinary ?eld in which researchers and practitioners from a number of areas are involved in a typical project. This also creates a challenge in which the success of a team depends on the participation of users and domain experts who need to interact with researchers and developers of any IDA system. All this is usually re?ected in successful projects and of course on the papers that were evaluated by this year’s program committee from which the ?nal program has been developed. In our call for papers, we solicited papers on (i) applications and tools, (ii) theory and general principles, and (iii) algorithms and techniques. We received a total of 184 papers, In the end 46 papers were accepted, which are all included in the proceedings and presented at the conference. This year’s papers re?ect the results of applied and theoretical researchfrom a number of disciplines all of which are related to the ?eld of Intelligent Data Analysis. To have the best combination of theoretical and applied research and also provide the best focus.

Advances in image enhancement
In the era of the internet of things, images have played important roles in human–computer interactions, and with the arrival of big data technology, people have higher requirements regarding image quality, especially for images collected in dark light. This can be addressed through the development of camera hardware quality, i.e., the resolution and exposure time of cameras, which may require high computational costs. As an alternative, image enhancement techniques can exact salient features to improve the quality of captured images according to the differences in diverse features, although they suffer from some challenges, i.e., a low contrast, artifacts, and overexposure, thus making it decidedly necessary to determine how to use advanced image enhancement techniques.
Advances in Human-Robot Interaction
The book addresses key issues of human-robot interaction concerned with perception, modelling, control, planning and cognition, covering a wide spectrum of applications. This includes interaction and communication with robots in manufacturing environments and the collaboration and co-existence with assistive robots in domestic environments. We received 156 papers from 19 different countries. The main topics are data mining in medicine and marketing, web mining, mining of images and signals, theoretical aspects of data mining, and aspects of data mining that bundle a series of different data mining applications such as intrusion detection, knowledge management, manufacturing process control, time-series mining and criminal investigations. The Program Committee worked hard in order to select the best papers.

This year a broad spectrum of work of different applications was presented ranging from image mining, medicine and biotechnology, management and environmental control, to telecommunications. Besides that an industrial exhibition showed the successful application of data mining methods by industries in different areas such as medical devices, mass data management systems, data mining tools, etc. During the discussion many projects were inspired leading to new and joint work. The fruitful discussions, the exchange of ideas and the spirit of the conference made it a remarkable event for both sides, industry and research.

Concerning these applications, there is a great need to understand and support the user by means of recommendation systems, adaptive information systems, as well as by personalization.
