Integrated Graphic and Computer Modelling
Full colour throughout, the book explores programming language developments from machine code to more natural language forms, and the basic display operations and commands needed to create effective computer graphic systems. As the visual presentation of real and virtual environments becomes more and more the norm in application systems, a clear understanding of the theory that underpins these techniques is required of all students and practitioners studying and working on large computer systems.
Integrated Capacity and Price Control in Revenue Management : A Fuzzy System Approach
Due to tough competition and increased customer-orientation, companies must improve their management of revenue objectives. In the context of a fluctuating demand and the unknown price behaviour of customers, the practice-oriented development of a revenue management approach for an integrated control of capacities and prices becomes essential. Michael Becher develops a concept for an integrated capacity and price control in revenue management. His concept is based on fuzzy expert controllers and complies with the defined business and application requirements. The resulting approach is evaluated in three applications: capacity control in waste incineration industry, price control in hotels and integrated capacity and price control in goods distribution. The results show that the amount of coverage can be increased due to the application of the proposed concept.

Insulin is a peptide hormone secreted by the B cells of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans and maintains normal blood glucose levels by facilitating cellular glucose uptake, regulating carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism and promoting cell division and growth through its mutagenic effects.

Modern industry imposes ever increasing requirements upon tools and tool materials as to the provision for performance under the conditions of high cutting speeds and dynamic loads as well as under intensive thermal and chemical interactions with workpiece materials. The industry demands a higher productivity in combination with the accuracy of geometry and dimensions of workpieces and quality of working surfaces of the machined pieces. These requirements are best met by the tool superhard materials (diamond and diamond-like cubic boron nitride). Ceramics based on silicon carbide, aluminum and boron oxides as well as on titanium, silicon and aluminum nitrides offer promise as tool materials. Tungsten-containing cemented carbides are still considered as suitable tool materials. Hi- hardness and high strength composites based on the above materials fit all the requirements imposed by machining jobs when manufacturing elements of machinery, in particular those operating under the extreme conditions of high temperatures and loads.

Informing Digital Futures : Strategies for Citizen Engagement
In the present digital revolution we often seem trapped in a Kafkaesque world of technological advances, some desired, some disliked or even feared, which we cannot influence but must accept. This book discusses the urgent need to redress this situation. The authors argue that technologies succeed or fail according to their relevance and value to people, who need to be actively engaged in order to create shared visions and influence their implementation. Strategies for citizen engagement and empowerment will enable citizens to influence and shape desirable digital futures. The book reviews the currently accepted ways of thinking about the design of systems and the reasons why these methods are no longer adequate. From an academically rigorous analysis of case histories across a wide variety of sectors, knowledge and best practice are captured in a rich, descriptive model of the contributions of citizen engagement to the design process. Informed Traders as Liquidity Providers : Evidence from the German Equity Market
A high frequency transaction data set for the German equity market is the basis for Alexandra Hachmeister’s extensive empirical analysis. This includes a detailed market description of the German equity market, a new methodological approach for the identification of informed traders and finally the analysis of the individual liquidity providing and demanding behavior of the identified informed traders. Questioning the existing theoretical literature on liquidity provision in equity markets, she finds strong evidence for liquidity providing behavior of informed traders.

Information Processing with Evolutionary Algorithms : From Industrial Applications to Academic Speculations
The last decade of the 20th century has witnessed a surge of interest in num- ical, computation-intensive approaches to information processing. The lines that draw the boundaries among statistics, optimization, arti cial intelligence and information processing are disappearing, and it is not uncommon to nd well-founded and sophisticated mathematical approaches in application - mains traditionally associated with ad-hoc programming. Heuristics has - come a branch of optimization and statistics. Clustering is applied to analyze soft data and to provide fast indexing in the World Wide Web. Non-trivial matrix algebra is at the heart of the last advances in computer vision. The breakthrough impulse was, apparently, due to the rise of the interest in arti cial neural networks, after its rediscovery in the late 1980s. Disguised as ANN, numerical and statistical methods made an appearance in the - formation processing scene, and others followed. A key component in many intelligent computational processing is the search for an optimal value of some function. Sometimes, this function is not evident and it must be made explicit in order to formulate the problem as an optimization problem. The search - ten takes place in high-dimensional spaces that can be either discrete, or c- tinuous or mixed. The shape of the high-dimensional surface that corresponds to the optimized function is usually very complex. Evolutionary algorithms are increasingly being applied to information processing applications that require any kind of optimization.
