General Relativity

this book is a short and concise exposition of the central ideas of general relativity. Although the original audience was made up of mathematics students, the focus is on the chain of reasoning that leads to the relativistic theory from the analysis of distance and time measurements in the presence of gravity, rather than on the underlying mathematical structure. The geometric ideas - which are central to the understanding of the nature of gravity - are introduced in parallel with the development of the theory, the emphasis being on laying bare how one is led to pseudo-Riemannian geometry through a natural process of reconciliation of special relativity with the equivalence principle.

Fuzzy Implications

Fuzzy Equational Logic

The book deals with similarity relations defined on a set with functions. The functions are required to map similar elements to similar ones. The book presents basic mathematical properties of structures consisting of similarity-preserving functions and logics for reasoning about similarities. The presented text is self-contained. Fuzzy Choice Functions : A Revealed Preference Approach

This book extends the theory of revealed preference to fuzzy choice functions and provides applications to multicriteria decision making problems. The main topics of revealed preference theory (rationality, revealed preference and congruence axioms, consistency conditions) are treated in the framework of fuzzy choice functions. New topics, such as the degree of dominance and similarity of vague choices, are developed. The results obtained are applied to economic problems where partial information and human subjectivity involve vague choices and vague preferences. The book contains a number of new results achieved by the author. Even though the text is reasonably self-contained, previous knowledge of revealed preference and fuzzy set theory is helpful for the reader.

Fuel cell technologies : State and perspectives ; Proceedings of the NATO advanced research workshop on fuel cell technologies: State and perspectives, Kyiv, Ukraine from 6 to 10 June 2004.

This book has brought together a team of world-renowned experts in all aspects of fuel cell development for both SOFC and PEM in a workshop environment. The workshop held between June 6–10, 2004 was held in the capital city of the Ukraine, Kiev. The reason for the venue was that Ukraine is the third largest resource of zircon sands, a major source of material for the solid oxide fuel cell. Ukraine is looking at undertaking a very large effort in the solid oxide fuel cell arena, and hopes, one day, to be an international player in this market, and this book is an outcome from the workshop. From Hyperbolic Systems to Kinetic Theory : A Personalized Quest

Equations of state are not always effective in continuum mechanics. Maxwell and Boltzmann created a kinetic theory of gases, using classical mechanics. How could they derive the irreversible Boltzmann equation from a reversible Hamiltonian framework? By using probabilities, which destroy physical reality! Forces at distance are non-physical as we know from Poincaré's theory of relativity. Yet Maxwell and Boltzmann only used trajectories like hyperbolas, reasonable for rarefied gases, but wrong without bound trajectories if the "mean free path between collisions" tends to 0. Tartar relies on his H-measures, a tool created for homogenization, to explain some of the weaknesses, e.g. from quantum mechanics: there are no "particles", so the Boltzmann equation and the second principle, can not apply. He examines modes used by energy, proves which equation governs each mode, and conjectures that the result will not look like the Boltzmann equation, and there will be more modes than those indexed by velocity!

From Assessing to Conserving Biodiversity : Conceptual and Practical Challenges

This book despite increasing communication, accelerating policy and management responses, and notwithstanding improving ecosystem assessment and endangered species knowledge, conserving biodiversity continues to be more a concern than an accomplished task. Why is it so? The overexploitation of natural resources by our species is a frequently recognised factor, while the short-term economic interests of governments and stakeholders typically clash with the burdens that implementing conservation actions imply. But this is not the whole story. This book develops a different perspective on the problem by exploring the conceptual challenges and practical defiance posed by conserving biodiversity, namely: on the one hand, the difficulties in defining what biodiversity is and characterizing that “thing” to which the word ‘biodiversity’ refers to; on the other hand, the reasons why assessing biodiversity and putting in place effective conservation actions is arduous.

Forest Diversity and Management
