Operations Research Proceedings 2006 ; Selected Papers of the Annual International Conference of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), Jointly Organized with the Austrian Society of Operations Research (ÖGOR) and the Swiss Society of Operations Research (SVOR)
Contains a selection of papers referring to lectures presented at the symposium ”OperationsResearch 2006” (OR 2006) held at the university of Karlsruhe, September 6 - 8, 2006. This international conference took place under the auspices of the Operations Research Societies of Germany (GOR), ¨ Austria (OGOR), and Switzerland (SVOR). The symposiumwas attended by morethan 600academicsand practiti- ers from 35 countries. It presented the state of the art in Operations Research and related areas in Economics, Mathematics, and Computer Science and demonstrated the broad applicability of its core themes, placing particular emphasis on Basel II, one of the most topical challenges of Operations - search. The scienti?c program consisted of two plenary talks, eleven semi-plenary talks and more than 400 contributed papers, selected by the program c- mittee and arranged in 19 sections.

Contains a selection of papers referring to lectures presented at the symposium "Operations Research 2004" (OR 2004) held at Tilburg University, September 1-3, 2004. This international conference took place under the auspices of the German Operations Research Society (GOR) and the Dutch Operations Research Society (NGB). The symposium had about 500 participants from more than 30 countries all over the world. It attracted academicians and practitioners working in various fields of Operations Research and provided them with the most recent ad vances in Operations Research and related areas in Economics, Mathematics, and Computer Science. The program consisted of 4 plenary and 19 semi-plenary talks and more than 300 contributed presentations, selected by the program committee, to be presented in 20 sections. Due to a limited number of pages available for the proceedings volume, the length of each article as well as the total number of accepted contributions had to be restricted. Submitted manuscripts have therefore been reviewed and 59 of them have been selected for publication
Operations Research and Health Care : A Handbook of Methods and Applications
In both rich and poor nations, public resources for health care are inadequate to meet demand. Policy makers and health care providers must determine how to provide the most effective health care to citizens using the limited resources that are available. This chapter describes current and future challenges in the delivery of health care, and outlines the role that operations research (OR) models can play in helping to solve those problems. The chapter concludes with an overview of this book – its intended audience, the areas covered, and a description of the subsequent chapters. Much of these gains occurred in low- and middle-income countries, and were due in large part to improved nutrition and sanitation, medical innovations, and improvements in public health infrastructure.

Operational Freight Carrier Planning : Basic Concepts, Optimization Models and Advanced Memetic Algorithms
Represents the compilation of several research approaches on opera tional freight carrier planning carried out at the Chair of Logistics, University of Bremen. It took nearly three years from the first ideas to the final version, now in your hands. During this time, several persons helped me all the time to keep on going and to re-start when I got stuck in a dead end or when I could not see the wood for the trees. I am deeply indebted to them for their encouragement and comments. Prof. Dr. Herbert Kopfer, holder of the Chair of Logistics, introduced me into the field of operational transport planning. Operating Hours and Working Times : A Survey of Capacity Utilisation and Employment in the European Union
Presents the descriptive findings and analytical results from the recent representative European Union Company survey of Operating hours, Working times and Employment (EUCOWE) in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom. The EUCOWE-project is the first representative and standardised European company survey which covers all categories of firm size and all sectors of the economy. Several relevant questions are addressed on the basis of the survey, such as: What are the operating hours of the different European countries that form the six country studies of this research? What are the differences between sectors of activities and establishment sizes? By means of what type of working-time organisation are those operating hours accomplished? What is the relationship between operating hours and employment? The book is the most comprehensive analysis on Operating Hours, Capacity Utilisation, Working Times and Employment in the European Union available.
Open Skies : The National Radio Astronomy Observatory and Its Impact on US Radio Astronomy
Covers the scientific discoveries and technical innovations of late 20th century radio astronomy with particular attention to the people and institutions involved. The authors have made extensive use of the NRAO Archives, which contain an unparalleled collection of documents pertaining to the history of radio astronomy, including the institutional records of NRAO as well as the personal papers of many of the pioneers of U.S. radio astronomy. Ontologies for Agents : Theory and Experiences
On the other hand, ontologies have established themselves as a powerful tool to enable kno- edge sharing, and a growing number of applications have bene?ted from the use of ontologies as a means to achieve semantic interoperability among heterogeneous, distributed systems. In principle ontologies and agents are a match made in heaven, that has failed to happen. What makes a simple piece of software an agent is its ability to communicate in a ”social” environment, to make autonomous decisions, and to be proactive on behalf of its user. Communication ultimately depends on und- standing the goals, preferences, and constraints posed by the user. Autonomy is theabilitytoperformataskwithlittleornouserintervention,whileproactiveness involves acting autonomously with no need for user prompting. Communication, but also autonomy and proactiveness, depend on knowledge. The ability to c- municate depends on understanding the syntax (terms and structure) and the semantics of a language. Ontologies provide the terms used to describe a domain and the semantics associated with them. In addition, ontologies are often comp- mented by some logical rules that constrain the meaning assigned to the terms. These constraints are represented by inference rules that can be used by agents to perform the reasoning on which autonomy and proactiveness are based.
One Hundred Years of Chemical Warfare : Research, Deployment, Consequences
On April 22, 1915, the German military released 150 tons of chlorine gas at Ypres, Belgium. Carried by a long-awaited wind, the chlorine cloud passed within a few minutes through the British and French trenches, leaving behind at least 1,000 dead and 4,000 injured. This chemical attack, which amounted to the first use of a weapon of mass destruction, marks a turning point in world history. The preparation as well as the execution of the gas attack was orchestrated by Fritz Haber, the director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry in Berlin-Dahlem. During World War I, Haber transformed his research institute into a center for the development of chemical weapons (and of the means of protection against them).
Ondansetron Patches
The objective of this study was to develop the matrix of transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS) of ondansetron hydrochloride (ODH), in which ondansetron is the first serotonin subtype 3 receptor antagonist indicated for the treatment and/or prophylaxis of postoperative, chemotherapy or radiotherapy induced emesis. It has been proven efficient and safe to treat such symptoms, by using in vitro drug release study and evaluate the effect of eucalyptus oil and different percentage of carbopol 940. The result of drug release decreased by increasing the percentage of carbopol 940 which achieved the purpose of the study by prolonging the release of the ondansetron . The patch provides a means to reduce the side effects associated with its oral therapy, avoidence of the first-pass metabolism and minimize inconsistency in absorption across GIT. Various types of transdermal patches are used to incorporate the active ingredients into the circulatory system via skin.

Olfactory knows the truth
Olfaction, the sense of smell detects and discriminate odors as well as social cues which influence our innate responses. The olfactory system in human beings is found to be weak as compared to other animals; however, it seems to be very precise. It can detect and discriminate millions of chemical moieties (odorants) even in minuscule quantities. The sense of smell is greatly underappreciated, despite the fact that it monitors the intake of airborne agents into the human respiratory system and determine to a large degree the flavor and palatability of foods and beverage. In addition to enhancing quality of life, this primary sensory system warns of spoiled foods, leaking natural gas, polluted air and smoke, and mediates basic elements of communication (e.g., mother-infant interaction). It is now apparent that smell dysfunction is among the first clinical signs of such neurodegenerative diseases as Alzheimer’s disease and sporadic Parkinson’s disease.
