Life System Modeling and Simulation; International Conference on Life System Modeling, and Simulation, LSMS 2007, Shanghai, China, September 14-17, 2007. Proceedings
The International Conference on Life System Modeling and Simulation (LSMS) was formed to bring together international researchers and practitioners in the field of life system modeling and simulation as well as life system-inspired theory and methodology. The arrival of the 21st century has been marked by a resurgence of research interest both in arriving at a systems-level und- standing of biology and in applying such knowledge in complex real-world appli- tions. Consequently, computational methods and intelligence in systems, biology, as well as bio-inspired computational intelligence, have emerged as key drivers for new computational methods. For this reason papers dealing with theory, techniques and real-world applications relating to these two themes were especially solicited.

Learning Theory ; Vol. 3559 : 18th Annual Conference on Learning Theory, COLT 2005, Bertinoro, Italy, June 27-30, 2005, Proceedings
The technical program contained 45 papers selected from 120 submissions, 3 open problems selected from among 5 contributed, and 2 invited lectures. The invited lectures were given by Sergiu Hart on “Uncoupled Dynamics and Nash Equilibrium”, and by Satinder Singh on “Rethinking State, Action, and Reward in Reinforcement Learning”. These papers were not included in this volume. The Mark Fulk Award is presented annually for the best paper co-authored by a student. The student selected this year was Hadi Salmasian for the paper titled “The Spectral Method for General Mixture Models” co-authored with Ravindran Kannan and Santosh Vempala. The number of papers submitted to COLT this year was exceptionally high. In addition to the classical COLT topics, we found an increase in the number of submissions related to novel classi?cation scenarios such as ranking. This - crease re?ects a healthy shift towards more structured classi?cation problems, which are becoming increasingly relevant to practitioners.

Contains selected and revised papers of the International Workshop on Lea- ing and Adaptation in Multi-Agent Systems (LAMAS 2005), held at the AAMAS 2005 Conference in Utrecht, The Netherlands, July 26. An important aspect in multi-agent systems (MASs) is that the environment evolves over time, not only due to external environmental changes but also due to agent int- actions. For this reason it is important that an agent can learn, based on experience, and adapt its knowledge to make rational decisions and act in this changing environment autonomously. Machine learning techniques for single-agent frameworks are well established. Agents operate in uncertain environments and must be able to learn and act - tonomously. This task is, however, more complex when the agent interacts with other agents that have potentially different capabilities and goals. The single-agent case is structurally different from the multi-agent case due to the added dimension of dynamic interactions between the adaptive agents. Multi-agent learning, i.e., the ability of the agents to learn how to cooperate and compete, becomes crucial in many domains. Autonomous agents and multi-agent systems (AAMAS) is an emerging multi-disciplinary area encompassing computer science, software engineering, biology, as well as cognitive and social sciences. A t- oretical framework, in which rationality of learning and interacting agents can be - derstood, is still under development in MASs, although there have been promising ?
Law and Justice in a globalized world
Consists of a selection of papers presented at the Asia-Pacific Research Conference on Social Sciences and Humanities. It contains essays on current legal issues in law and justice, and their role and transformation in a globalizing world. Topics covered include human rights, criminal law, law of the sea, good governance, democracy, foreign investment, and regional integration. The conference focused on Asia and the Pacific, two regions where law has taken an important position in creating and shaping the regional integrations, new legal institutions, and norms.

Since 1995, when Costas Fotakis first brought together restorers and scientists to discuss the potential of lasers in art conservation, the field has grown enormously in importance, and today restorers and laser scientists work together to develop new applications. This book presents the more than six dozen research papers prepared for LACONA V (Lasers in Art Conservation), held in Osnabrueck/Germany in September 2003. The fifth congress once again gathers restorers, art historians, museum staff, laser scientists and laser manufacturers. The topics include, among others: laser cleaning of artworks (case studies and side effects), removal of former conservation layers, fundamentals of laser-artwork interaction, online monitoring and process control, laser diagnostics, spectroscopy for monitoring and identification, networks and co-operation projects.

Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing ; Vol. 2481 : 15th Workshop, LCPC 2002, College Park, MD, USA, July 25-27, 2002, Revised Papers
LCPC 2002 brought together over 60 researchers from academia and research institutions from many countries. The program of 26 papers was selected from 32 submissions. Each paper was reviewed by at least three Program Committee members and sometimes by additional reviewers. Prior to the workshop, revised versions of accepted papers were informally published on the workshop’s website and in a paper proceedings that was distributed at the meeting. This year, the workshopwas organizedinto sessions of papers on related topics, and each session consisted of two to three 30-minute presentations.Based on feedback from the workshop,the papers were revised and submitted for inclusion in the formal proceedings published in this volume. Two papers were presented at the workshop but later withdrawn from the ?nal proceedings by their authors. We were very lucky to have Bill Carlson from the Department of Defense give the LCPC 2002 keynote speech on “UPC: A C Language for Shared M- ory Parallel Programming.” Bill gave an excellent overview of the features and programming model of the UPC parallel programming language.
