Advances in Artificial Intelligence ; Vol. 3955 : 4th Helenic Conference on AI, SETN 2006, Heraklion, Crete, Greece, May 18-20, 2006, Proceedings
Constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th Hellenic Conference on Artificial Intelligence, SETN 2006, held at Heraklion, Crete, Greece in May 2006. The 43 revised full papers and extended abstracts of 34 revised short papers presented together with 2 invited contributions were carefully reviewed and selected from 125 submissions. The papers address any area of artificial intelligence; particular fields of interest include; logic programming, knowledge-based systems, intelligent information retrieval, machine learning, neural nets, genetic algorithms, data mining and knowledge discovery, hybrid intelligent systems and methods, intelligent agents, multi-agent systems, intelligent distributed systems, intelligent/natural interactivity, intelligent virtual environments, planning, scheduling, and robotics.

Intelligent Design and complex problem solving are twined like wife and husband.” In the current competitive global industrial environment there are many pr- lems which need intelligent systems technology for optimal solutions. The central theme of the 19th International Conference on Industrial, Engineering & Other Applications of Applied Intelligent Systems (IEA/AIE 2006) is to focus on the research methodologies and practical implementations of these methodologies for intelligent solutions of problems in real-world applications. We are pleased to present the papers in these proceedings which cover va- ous aspects of applications of applied intelligent systems. We received more than 330 papers from many countries and each paper was reviewed by at least two reviewers. Only 134 papers were selected for presentation in the normal and special sessions.

Advanced Techniques in Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining
This explosion is a result of the growing use of electronic media. But what is data mining (DM)? A Web search using the Google search engine retrieves many (really many) definitions of data mining. We include here a few interesting ones. One of the simpler definitions is: “As the term suggests, data mining is the analysis of data to establish relationships and identify patterns” [1]. It focuses on identifying relations in data. Our next example is more elaborate: An information extraction activity whose goal is to discover hidden facts contained in databases. Using a combination of machine learning, statistical analysis, modeling techniques and database technology, data mining finds patterns and subtle relationships in data and infers rules that allow the prediction of future results. Typical applications include market segmentation, customer profiling, fraud detection, evaluation of retail promotions, and credit risk analysis .

A NATO Advanced Research Workshop on ”Advanced Radiation Sources and Applications” Hosted by the Yerevan Physics Institute, Yerevan, Armenia, 30 invited researchers from former Soviet Union and NATO countries gathered at Nor-Hamberd, Yerevan, on the slopes of Mount Aragats to discuss recent theoretical as well as expe- mental developments on means of producing photons from mostly low energy electrons.
Advanced Quantum Mechanics
Advanced Quantum Mechanics, the second volume on quantum mechanics by Franz Schwabl, discusses nonrelativistic multi-particle systems, relativistic wave equations and relativistic fields. Characteristic of Schwabl’s work, this volume features a compelling mathematical presentation in which all intermediate steps are derived and where numerous examples for application and exercises help the reader to gain a thorough working knowledge of the subject. The treatment of relativistic wave equations and their symmetries and the fundamentals of quantum field theory lay the foundations for advanced studies in solid-state physics, nuclear and elementary particle physics. This text extends and complements Schwabl’s introductory Quantum Mechanics, which covers nonrelativistic quantum mechanics and offers a short treatment of the quantization of the radiation field. New material has been added to this third edition of Advanced Quantum Mechanics on Bose gases, the Lorentz covariance of the Dirac equation, and the ‘hole theory’ in the chapter "Physical Interpretation of the Solutions to the Dirac Equation."
Advanced Planning in Fresh Food Industries: Integrating Shelf Life into Production Planning
Production planning in fresh food industries is a challenging task. Although modern Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) systems could provide significant support, APS implementation numbers in these industries remain low. Therefore, based on an in-depth analysis of three sample fresh food industries (dairy, fresh and processed meat), the author evaluates what APS systems should offer in order to effectively support production planning and how the leading systems currently handle the most distinguishing characteristic of fresh food industries, the short product shelf life. Starting from the identified weaknesses, customized software solutions for each of the sample industries are proposed that allow to optimize the production of fresh foods with respect to shelf life.

Covers synthesis, characterization, and applications of diverse types of nanomaterials. Specifically, it describes carbon, graphene, and graphene oxide-based nanomaterials and their use for environmental remediation. Nanomaterials for concrete coating applications and advances in the processing of high-entropy alloys by means of mechanical alloying are also covered. Subsequently, the use of nanomaterials in endodontics and the use of nanotechnology strategies to enhance restorative resin-based dental nanomaterials are reported.

Advanced environments, tools, and applications for cluster computing ; NATO Advanced Research Workshop, IWCC 2001, Mangalia, Romania, September 1-6, 2001. Revised Papers
Started by small group of well known scientists with the aim of sharing knowledge, experiences, and results on all aspects of cluster computing, the initiative of a workshop on cluster computing received more attention after IFIP WG 10.3 and IEEE Romania Section accepted our request for sponsorship. Moreover, the application for a NATO ARW grant was successful, leading to a greater interest in the workshop. In this respect, we have to say that we chose Romania in order to attract scientists from Central and Eastern European countries and improve the cooperation in the region, in the field of cluster computing. We had an extremely short time to organize the event, but many people joined us and enthusiastically contributed to the process. The success of the workshop is wholly due to the hard work of the organizing committee, members of the program committee, key speakers, speakers from industry, and authors of accepted papers.

This book about Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Workshop “Advanced Combustion and Aerothermal Technologies: Environmental Protection and Pollution Reductions” was held in Kiev (Ukraine) from 15 to 19 May 2006 and was organized by the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics (Ukraine) and Cardiff University (UK). These subjects to cover the critical areas of combustion and aerothermal research and development where rapid progress is needed to improve performance in terms of efficiency, compactness, and emissions. This was a very timely and successful Workshop which brought together experts from the NATO and other countries to discuss increasing concerns about emissions.
