Radar Interferometry : Persistent Scatterer Technique

This volume is devoted to the Persistent Scatterer Technique, the latest development in radar interferometric data processing. Using this technique, millimetric displacements can be observed at hundreds of thousands of targets that are affected only slightly from temporal and geometric decorrelation, such as the walls and the roofs of houses, lamp posts, grates, window ledges, etc. All acquired data can be used by this technique, which enables the analysis of displacements since 1992 in any area world-wide, using the archived historical data of the ERS-1 and ERS-2 satellites. Data of other current and future sensors can also be processed using this technique. The original PS algorithm is revisited based on the main literature, and possible weak points are identified.

Quantum Superposition : Counterintuitive Consequences of Coherence, Entanglement, and Interference

Coherence, entanglement, and interference arise from quantum superposition, the most distinctive and puzzling feature of quantum physics. Silverman, whose extensive experimental and theoretical work has helped elucidate these processes, presents a clear and engaging discussion of the role of quantum superposition in diverse quantum phenomena such as the wavelike nature of particle propagation, indistinguishability of identical particles, nonlocal interactions of correlated particles, topological effects of magnetic fields, and chiral asymmetry in nature. He also examines how macroscopic quantum coherence may be able to extricate physics from its most challenging quandary, the collapse of a massive degenerate star to a singularity in space in which the laws of physics break down.

Quantum Optics

Quantum Optics gives a comprehensive coverage of developments in quantum optics over the past years. In the early chapters the formalism of quantum optics is elucidated and the main techniques are introduced. These are applied in the later chapters to problems such as squeezed states of light, resonance fluorescence, laser theory, quantum theory of four-wave mixing, quantum non-demolition measurements, Bell's inequalities, and atom optics. Experimental results are used to illustrate the theory throughout. This yields the most comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of experiment and theory in quantum optics in any textbook. More than 40 exercises helps readers test their understanding and provide practice in quantitative problem solving.

Quantum Kinetics in Transport and Optics of Semiconductors

Nanoscale miniaturization and femtosecond laser-pulse spectroscopy require a quantum mechanical description of the carrier kinetics that goes beyond the conventional Boltzmann theory. On these extremely short length and time scales the electrons behave like partially coherent waves. This monograph deals with quantum kinetics for transport in low-dimensional microstructures and for ultra-short laser pulse spectroscopy. The nonequilibrium Green function theory is described and used for the derivation of the quantum kinetic equations. Numerical methods for the solution of the retarded quantum kinetic equations are discussed and results are presented for high-field transport and for mesoscopic transport phenomena. Quantum beats, polarization decay, and non-Markovian behaviour are treated for femtosecond spectroscopy on a microscopic basis.

Quantum Interferometry in Phase Space : Theory and Applications

Quantum Interferometry in Phase Space is primarily concerned with quantum-mechanical distribution functions and their applications in quantum optics and neutron interferometry. In the first part of the book, the author describes the phase-space representation of quantum optical phenomena such as coherent and squeezed states. Applications to interferometry, e.g. in beam splitters and fiber networks, are also presented. In the second part of the book, the theoretical formalism is applied to neutron interferometry, including the dynamical theory of diffraction, coherence properties of superposed beams, and dephasing effects.

Pyrometamorphism

Pyrometamorphism is a type of contact metamorphism (sanidinite facies) involving very high temperatures that may cause fusion in suitable lithologies at very low pressures. The high temperatures are attained by flow of mafic magma through conduits, by way of spontaneous combustion of coal, carbonaceous sediments, oil and gas, and through the action of lightning strikes. Temperature gradients are typically extreme, varying by several hundred degrees over a few metres or even centimetres. Relatively short periods of heating and cooling create an environment dominated by metastable melting and rapid mineral reaction rates driven by significant temperature overstepping of equilibrium conditions. This results in the formation of a large variety of minerals, many of which are metastable and are only found in pyrometamorphic rocks.

Psychosomatics diseases

Psychosomatics definition is a branch of medicine that deals with psychosomatic diseases which are diseases in which the mental and psychological factors of the patient greatly influence their emergence, development and turbulence, such as: migraine, eczema, ulcers, irritable bowel ... Etc., and in the event of a medical examination, no physical or organic causes appear for these diseases, or in the event of a disease resulting from an emotional or mood state such as anger, anxiety, depression, or guilt, in this case such cases are considered psychosomatic diseases. Psychosomatic diseases differ from transformational hysteria in that hysteria does not include a true organic defect, where the organ is healthy but is unable to perform its function, while in psychosomatic diseases, emotional and psychological factors lead to a defect in the anatomical formation of the affected organ, such as cases of stomach ulcers or inflammation Joints..etc.

Protocollo per la valutazione delle abilità prassiche e della coordinazione motoria APCM = Protocol for the evaluation of practical skills and motor coordination APCM

Intended to provide valuable support in formulating a definitive diagnosis in children with multiple developmental difficulties (learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and signs of dyspraxia). The authors also emphasize the importance of carefully observing certain aspects of the behavior of children with these difficulties. Recent research, based on the concept of embodied cognition, has shown that experiences derived from the body, and therefore the development and control of motor functions, play a crucial role in the development of the mind, or cognitive development.

Prenatal Exposures : Psychological and Educational Consequences for Children

Synthesizes important findings that help explain why prenatal events may result in abnormal behavior and learning disabilities later in life. Examines the role of prenatal perturbations, along with genetics and the postnatal roles of caretakers and the social environment, in light of how each may – individually or together – contribute to conditions as varied as dyslexia, schizophrenia, fetal alcohol syndrome, and autism. Ensures that effective prevention and intervention can occur during the prenatal phases of development. Addresses the research needs in behavioral teratology that are likely to lead to discoveries that may ensure the birth of healthier babies who develop normally across the lifespan.
