Meaning in Mathematics Education
This book presents a wide variety of theoretical reflections and research results about meaning in mathematics and mathematics education based on long-term and collective reflection by the group of authors as a whole. It is the outcome of the work of the BACOMET (BAsic COmponents of Mathematics Education for Teachers) group who spent several years deliberating on this topic. The ten chapters in this book, both separately and together, provide a substantial contribution to clarifying the complex issue of meaning in mathematics education.
Maxillofacial Imaging
Demonstrates how advanced medical imaging techniques can be successfully applied to dental and maxillofacial conditions. There is a focus on CT and MRI, but the use of all contemporary imaging techniques are illustrated including PET, PET/CT, ultrasonography, and cone beam CT. The presentation is in atlas style, with succinct, bulleted text and a wealth of high-quality images in multiple planes. All images for each patient are grouped to enable the reader very quickly to gain an imaging overview of the condition under consideration. After a comprehensive introductory chapter on normal imaging anatomy, the role of advanced imaging techniques is described in pathologic conditions of the mandible and maxilla, temporomandibular joint, regions closely related to the jaw, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, salivary glands, and structures adjacent to the maxillofacial region. A concluding chapter examines the use of interventional procedures for diagnosis and treatment of maxillofacial conditions. Compared with the first edition, numerous additional cases have been incorporated and a completely new chapter focuses on cone beam CT.
Matrix Convolution Operators on Groups
In the last decade, convolution operators of matrix functions have received unusual attention due to their diverse applications. This monograph presents some new developments in the spectral theory of these operators. The setting is the Lp spaces of matrix-valued functions on locally compact groups. The focus is on the spectra and eigenspaces of convolution operators on these spaces, defined by matrix-valued measures. Among various spectral results, the L2-spectrum of such an operator is completely determined and as an application, the spectrum of a discrete Laplacian on a homogeneous graph is computed using this result. The contractivity properties of matrix convolution semigroups are studied and applications to harmonic functions on Lie groups and Riemannian symmetric spaces are discussed. An interesting feature is the presence of Jordan algebraic structures in matrix-harmonic functions.
Mathematical Survey Lectures 1943-2004
This collection traces the career of Beno Eckmann, whose work ranges across a broad spectrum of mathematical concepts from topology and differential geometry through homological algebra to group theory. One of our most influential living mathematicians, Eckmann has been associated for nearly his entire professional life with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH), as student, lecturer, professor, and professor emeritus.
Mathematical Statistics : Exercises and Solutions
This book consists of four hundred exercises in mathematical statistics and their solutions,this solutions to train students for their research ability in mathematical statistics and presents many additional results and examples that complement any text in mathematical statistics. To develop problem-solving skills, two solutions and/or notes of brief discussions accompany a few exercises.The exercises are grouped into seven chapters with titles matching those in the author's Mathematical Statistics.
Intrusion and Malware Detection and Vulnerability Assessment 2nd International Conference, DIMVA 2005, Vienna, Austria, July 7-8, 2005, Proceedings
Represents an increase of approximately 25% compared with the n- ber of submissions last year. All submissions were carefully reviewed by at least three Program Committee members or external experts according to the cri- ria of scienti?c novelty, importance to the ?eld, and technical quality. The ?nal selection took place at a meeting held on March 18, 2005, in Zurich, Switz- land. Fourteen full papers were selected for presentation and publication in the conference proceedings. In addition, three papers were selected for presentation in the industry track of the conference. The program featured both theoretical and practical research results, which were grouped into six sessions. Philip Att?eld from the Northwest Security Institute gave the opening keynote speech. The slides presented by the authors are available on the DIMVA 2005 Web site at http://www.dimva.org/dimva2005 We sincerely thank all those who submitted papers as well as the Program Committee members and the external reviewers for their valuable contributions.
Intramembrane-Cleaving Proteases (I-CLiPs)
The aim of this book is to provide an update on this emerging group of unusual but important proteases for both the specialist and those with a broader interest in proteases. Amongst the target audience will be protease researchers, enzymologists, those working in academia and the pharmaceutical industry on biological processes and diseases involving I-CLiPs.

This research monograph focuses on the arithmetic, over number fields, of surfaces fibred into curves of genus 1 over the projective line, and of intersections of two quadrics in projective space. The first half contains a complete account of the technique initiated by Swinnerton-Dyer in 1993 for studying rational points on pencils of curves of genus 1, while incorporating and generalising most of its subsequent refinements. The second half, which builds upon the first, is devoted to quartic del Pezzo surfaces and higher-dimensional intersections of two quadrics.

Recent armed conflicts, whether international or non-international in character, are in many respects characterized by a variety of asymmetries. These asymmetries may be overstressed, sometime even abused, and ultimately virtually meaningless. The goal of that colloquium, which marked the 70th birthday of Knut Ipsen, was to find operable solutions for problems and challenges the contemporary law of armed conflict is confronted with.

International Handbook of Juvenile Justice
This comprehensive reference work presents an in-depth analysis on the juvenile justice systems of 19 different countries, both in EU-member states (old and new) and in the United States and Canada. The book is the result of research conducted by a group of outstanding scholars working in the field of juvenile justice. The book reflects a collective concern about trends in juvenile justice over the past two decades; trends that have begun to blur the difference between criminal and juvenile justice. The introduction highlights similarities and differences between the various systems, identifying three clusters of countries with a similar approach to juvenile justice. In particular, differences are found between the Anglo-Saxon countries, and continental Europe.
