This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Haptic and Audio Interaction Design, HAID 2008 held in Jyväskylä, Finland, in September 2008.The 13 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on visual impairment, applications of multimodality, evaluation, conceptual integration of audio and haptics, interaction techniques, and perception.
Happiness—Concept, Measurement and Promotion
This book defines happiness intuitively and explores several common conceptual mistakes with regard to happiness. It then moves on to address topical issues including, but not limited to, whether money can buy you happiness, why happiness is ultimately the only thing of intrinsic value, and the various factors important for happiness. Handbook of Multilevel Analysis
Multilevel analysis is the statistical analysis of hierarchically and non-hierarchically nested data. The simplest example is clustered data, such as a sample of students clustered within schools. Multilevel data are especially prevalent in the social and behavioral sciences and in the bio-medical sciences. The models used for this type of data are linear and nonlinear regression models that account for observed and unobserved heterogeneity at the various levels in the data. ICGT 2006 was the 3rd International Conference on Graph Transformation, following the previous two in Barcelona (2002) and Rome (2004), and a series of six international workshops between 1978 and 1998. The scope of the conference concerned graphical structures of various kinds (like graphs, diagrams and visual sentences) that are useful when describing complex structures and systems in a direct and intuitive way. These structures are often enriched with formalisms that model their evolution via suitable kinds of transformations. This volume is the outgrowth of research the author has conducted in recent years. Fuzzy Database Modeling with XML introduces state of the art information to the database research, while at the same time serving the information technology professional faced with a non-traditional application that defeats conventional approaches. The research on fuzzy conceptual models and fuzzy object-oriented databases is receiving increasing attention, in addition to fuzzy relational database models. With rapid advances in network and internet techniques as well, the databases have been applied under the environment of distributed information systems. It is essential in this case to integrate multiple fuzzy database systems. Since databases are commonly employed to store and manipulate XML data, additional requirements are necessary to model fuzzy information with XML. Second, this book maps fuzzy XML model to the fuzzy databases. Very few efforts at investigating these issues have thus far occurred.

From Summetria to Symmetry : The Making of a Revolutionary Scientific Concept
The concept of symmetry is inherent to modern science, and its evolution has a complex history that richly exemplifies the dynamics of scientific change. This study is based on primary sources, presented in context: the authors examine closely the trajectory of the concept in the mathematical and scientific disciplines as well as its trajectory in art and architecture. The principal goal is to demonstrate that, despite the variety of usages in many different domains there is a conceptual unity underlying the invocation of symmetry in the period from antiquity to the 1790s which is distinct from the scientific usages of this term that first emerged in France at the end of the 18th century.
From Assessing to Conserving Biodiversity : Conceptual and Practical Challenges
This book despite increasing communication, accelerating policy and management responses, and notwithstanding improving ecosystem assessment and endangered species knowledge, conserving biodiversity continues to be more a concern than an accomplished task. Why is it so? The overexploitation of natural resources by our species is a frequently recognised factor, while the short-term economic interests of governments and stakeholders typically clash with the burdens that implementing conservation actions imply. But this is not the whole story. This book develops a different perspective on the problem by exploring the conceptual challenges and practical defiance posed by conserving biodiversity, namely: on the one hand, the difficulties in defining what biodiversity is and characterizing that “thing” to which the word ‘biodiversity’ refers to; on the other hand, the reasons why assessing biodiversity and putting in place effective conservation actions is arduous.
