Lectures on Quantum Gravity
A primary goal was to foster interaction and communication between participants from different cultures, both in the layman’s sense of the term and in terms of approaches to quantum gravity. We hope that the links formed by students and the school will persist throughout their professional lives, continuing to promote interaction and the essential exchange of ideas that drives research forward. This volume contains improved and updated versions of the lectures given at the School. It has been prepared both as a reminder for the participants, and so that these pedagogical introductions can be made available to others who were unable to attend. We expect them to serve students of all ages well.

The new edition of this book takes stock of the current state of the program and its initial results. It updates technical and radiological aspects, assessment indicators, communication and forensic problems and finally the progress of foreign programs. The history of the French program is detailed from the 1990s until 2006, with the publication of the latest version of the specifications by the Directorate General of Health. The short and medium term objectives are re-specified: to increase the participation of women, to retain them and to further improve the quality of practices. The challenge is to combine the performance of screening and therapeutic management to finally achieve a clear reduction in mortality, which has remained stable for twenty years.

Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing ; Vol. 2481 : 15th Workshop, LCPC 2002, College Park, MD, USA, July 25-27, 2002, Revised Papers
LCPC 2002 brought together over 60 researchers from academia and research institutions from many countries. The program of 26 papers was selected from 32 submissions. Each paper was reviewed by at least three Program Committee members and sometimes by additional reviewers. Prior to the workshop, revised versions of accepted papers were informally published on the workshop’s website and in a paper proceedings that was distributed at the meeting. This year, the workshopwas organizedinto sessions of papers on related topics, and each session consisted of two to three 30-minute presentations.Based on feedback from the workshop,the papers were revised and submitted for inclusion in the formal proceedings published in this volume. Two papers were presented at the workshop but later withdrawn from the ?nal proceedings by their authors. We were very lucky to have Bill Carlson from the Department of Defense give the LCPC 2002 keynote speech on “UPC: A C Language for Shared M- ory Parallel Programming.” Bill gave an excellent overview of the features and programming model of the UPC parallel programming language.

The content of this edited volume Landscapes, Genomics and Transgenic Conifers addresses this question directly - and indirectly - using language drawn from policy, forest history, genomics, metabolism, pollen dispersal and gene flow, landscape ecology, evolution, economics, technology transfer and regulatory oversight. Although the book takes its title from a Nicholas School Leadership forum held November 17-19, 2004 at Duke University, its de novo contents move past the forum’s deliberations. The result is a trans-disciplinary book composed of 14 chapters written by a total of 31 authors working in North America, South America, Europe and Africa.

Landscape as Urbanism : A General Theory
Traces the roots of landscape as a form of urbanism from its origins in the Renaissance through the twentieth century. Land use and land-cover change research over the past decade has focused mainly on contemporary primary land-cover conversions in the tropics and sub-tropics, with considerable resources dedicated to the explanation and prediction of tropical deforestation and often ignoring the dynamism in the world’s agro-pastoral landscapes. This collection integrates cutting-edge research in the social, biogeophysical, and geographical information sciences to understand the human and environmental dynamics that change the type, magnitude and location of land uses and land covers in the changing countryside.This book describes the monitoring of land-cover changes, explains the processes through which land is altered, and describes the development of spatially-explicit models to predict land change. This book illustrates how practitioners have integrated knowledge from the three scientific realms - social, biophysical, and GIScience - that underpin land-change science.
Land Use and Soil Resources
Land-use change is one of the main drivers of many environmental change processes. It influences the basic resources of land use, including the soil. Its impact on soil often occurs so creepingly that land managers hardly contemplate initiating ameliorative or counterbalance measures. Poor land management has degraded vast amounts of land, reduced our ability to produce enough food, and is a major threat to rural livelihoods in many developing countries. To date, there has been no single unifying volume that addresses the multifaceted impacts of land use on soils. This book has responded to this challenge by bringing together renowned academics and policy experts to analyze the patterns, driving factors and proximate causes, and the socioeconomic impacts of soil degradation. Policy measures to prevent irreversible degradation and rehabilitate degraded soils are also identified.
