Promises and challenges of regenerative medicine
The attitude to the possibility of regeneration in mammals has changed in recent years to one of cautious optimism that the endogenous mechanisms can be exploited for the medical armentarium. In this volume leading experts discuss the molecular, in vivo and clinical aspects of the use of stem cells in various disease contexts. With the current excitement in the research and clinical communities over the potential of regenerative medicine it is hoped that novel therapies will emerge that target intractable degenerative diseases. The book contains accounts of the latest advances in stem cell biology from the foremost researchers in the field. It discusses the analysis and use of stem cells in basic biology but also their application in clinical practice and is therefore unique in combining basic and applied approaches.

Coumarin chemistry remains one of the major interest areas of phytochemists, especially because of their structural diversity and medicinal properties, along with the wide-ranging bioactivities of these compounds, inclusive of analgesic, anticoagulant anti-HIV, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antineoplastic, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. The second contribution presents a comprehensive survey of the many aspects of PAD biochemistry and physiology. The third contribution gives a comprehensive overview of secondary metabolites from higher fungi, with more than 700 references highlighting the isolation, structure elucidation, biological activities, chemical synthesis, and biosynthesis of pigments, nitrogen-containing compounds, and terpenoids from mushrooms.

The first chapter describes the oldest method of communication between living systems in Nature, the chemical language. Plants, due to their lack of mobility, have developed the most sophisticated way of chemical communication. The second chapter is focused on the natural products obtained from Hypericum L., a genus of the family Hypericaceae within the dicotyledones. Hypericum has been valued for its important biological and chemical properties and its use in the treatment of depression and as an antibacterial has been well documented in primary literature and ethnobotanical reports. The present contribution gives a comprehensive summary of the chemical constituents and biological effects of this genus. The third chapter addresses microtubule stabilizers, which are a mainstay in the treatment of many solid cancers and are often used in combination with molecularly targeted anticancer agents and immunotherapeutics.

The first chapter in volume 111 summarizes research on the sesterterpenoids, which are known as a relatively small group of natural products. However, they express a variety of simple to complicated chemical structures. This chapter focuses on the chemical structures of sesterterpenoids and how their structures are synthesized in Nature. The second chapter is devoted to marine-derived fungi, which play an important role in the search for structurally unique secondary metabolites, some of which show promising pharmacological activities that make them useful leads for drug discovery. Marine natural product research in China in general has made enormous progress in the last two decades as described in this chapter on fungal metabolites.

This volume comprises three reviews. The first describes isolation, structure determination, syntheses, and biochemistry of the low molecular weight compounds of the secretion of exocrine glands of termies with emphasis to pheromones and defensive compounds. The second review describes recent studies on isolation and structure elucidation of bioactive compounds involved in the life cycle and determination of the molecular mechanisms of the developmental events observed in higher plants. The third contribution reports on the current body of knowledge of African propolis, with a particular emphasis on its chemistry and biological activity.

It summarizes current trends in research on medicinal plants in Mexico with emphasis on work carried out at the authors' laboratories. The most relevant phytochemical and pharmacological profiles of a selected group of plants used widely for treating major national health problems are described. It is also provides a detailed survey of the so far reported literature data on the capacities of selected oxyprenylated phenylpropanoids and polyketides to trigger receptors, enzymes, and other types of cellular factors for which they exhibit a high degree of affinity and therefore evoke specifice responses.It discusses aspects of endophytic actinobacterial biology and chemistry, including biosynthesis and total synthesis of secondary metabolites produced in culture. It also presents perspectives fo the future of microbial biodiscovery, with emphasis on the seondary metabolism of endophytic actinobacteria.

It describes examples of very promising compounds discovered from plants acquired from Africa, Southeast Asia, the Americas, and the Caribbean region with potential anticancer activity. These include plant secondary metabolites of the diphyllin lignan, penta[b]benzofuran, triterpenoid, and tropane alkaloid types.The reported pharmacological activities of the new and known alkaloids showed a greater bias towards central nervous system and related activities. Other prominent activities reported were antifeedant or insecticidal, cytotoxicity/antitumor/anticancer/estrogenic, antiprotozoal, antiinflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal and antiviral activities.

The conference was co-organized by the Information Security Research Lab at Swinburne University of Technology (Sarawak Campus), NISER (National ICT Security and Emergency Response Centre) and INSPEM (Ins- tute for Mathematical Research)at UPM (University Putra Malaysia).Mycrypt 2005 was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during September 28-30 2005, in conjunction with the e-Secure Malaysia 2005 convention. Therewere90paper submissionsfrom23 countriescoveringall areasof cr- tologic research, from which 19 were accepted. We would like to extend our thanks to all authors who submitted papers to Mycrypt 2005. Each paper was sent an onymously to at least 3 members of the International Program Committee for reviews and comments. The review comments were then followed by disc- sions among the Program Committee. A recipient of the Best Paper Award was also selected after voting among Program Committee members. . These proceedings contain revised versions of all the accepted papers.
Progress in Cryptology - INDOCRYPT 2004 ; 5th International Conference on Cryptology in India, Chennai, India, December 20-22, 2004, Proceedings
The INDOCRYPT series of conferences started in 2000. INDOCRYPT 2004 was the ?fth one in this series. The popularity of this series is increasing every year. The number of papers submitted to INDOCRYPT 2004 was 181, out of which 147 papers conformed to the specifications in the call for papers and, therefore, were accepted to the review process. Those 147 submissions were spread over 22 countries. Only 30 papers were accepted to this proceedings. We should note that many of the papers that were not accepted were of good quality but only the top 30 papers were accepted. Each submission received at least three independent - views. The selection process also included a Web-based discussion phase. We made efforts to compare the submissions with other ongoing conferences around the world in order to ensure detection of double-submissions, which were not - lowed by the call for papers. We wish to acknowledge the use of the Web-based review software developed by Bart Preneel, Wim Moreau, and Joris Claessens in conducting the review process electronically. The software greatly facilitated the Program Committee in completing the review process on time. We would like to thank C´ edric Lauradoux and the team at INRIA for their total support in conguring and managing the Web-based submission and review softwares.

The 21 papers presented in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 49 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on zero knowledge, symmetric key cryptography, elliptic curves, post quantum cryptography, lattice based cryptography, side channel attacks, cryptanalysis and new algorithms and schemes. AFRICACRYPT is a major scientific event that seeks to advance and promote the field of cryptology on the African continent. The conference has systematically drawn some excellent contributions to the field. The conference has always been organized in cooperation with the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR).

Programming Multi-Agent Systems ; Vol. 3346 : 2nd International Workshop ProMAS 2004, New York, NY, July 20, 2004, Selected Revised and Invited Papers
Focusses on a principled way to combine the two dominant paradigms for building multiagent team plans, namely the “belief-desire-intention” (BDI) approach and distributed POMDPs. In this hybrid BDI-POMDP approach, BDI team plans are exploited to improve distributed POMDP tractability and distributed POMDP-based analysis improves BDI team plan performance. Concretely, we focus on role allocation, a fundamental problem in BDI teams – which agents to allocate to the different roles in the team. The hybrid BDI-POMDP approach provides three key contributions. First, unlike prior work in multiagent role allocation, we describe a role allocation technique that takes into account future uncertainties in the domain. The second contribution is a novel decomposition technique, which exploits the structure in the BDI team plans to significantly prune the search space of combinatorially many role allocations. Our third key contribution is a significantly faster policy evaluation algorithm suited for our BDI-POMDP hybrid approach. Finally, we also present experimental results from two domains: mission rehearsal simulation and RoboCupRescue disaster rescue simulation. In the RoboCupRescue domain, we show that the role allocation technique presented in this paper is capable of performing at human expert levels by comparing with the allocations chosen by humans in the actual RoboCupRescue simulation environment.

We received over 550 submissions this year, giving acceptance rates below 30% for each one. Congratulations to all the authors who made it to the ?nal program! I hope that most of the other authors still found a way of participating in this exciting event and I hope you will continue submitting. The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system development process, including specification, design, implementation, analysis and improvement. The languages, methodologies and tools which support these - tivities are all well within its scope. Di?erent blends of theory and practice are represented, with an inclination towards theory with a practical motivation on the one hand and soundly based practice on the other. Many of the issues involved in software design apply to systems in general, including hardware s- tems, and the emphasis on software is not intended to be exclusive.
