JDBC Recipes : A Problem-Solution Approach

JDBC Recipes provides easy-to-implement, usable solutions to problems in relational databases that use JDBC. You will be able to integrate these solutions into your web-based applications, such as Java servlets, JavaServer Pages, and Java server-side frameworks. This handy book allows you to cut and paste the solutions without any code changes. This book focuses on topics that have been ignored in most other JDBC books, such as database and result set metadata. It will help you develop database solutions, like adapters, connectors, and frameworks using Java/JDBC. The insightful solutions will enable you to handle all data types, including large binary objects. A unique feature of the book is that it presents JDBC solutions (result sets) in XML.

IUTAM Symposium on Multiscale Modelling of Damage and Fracture Processes in Composite Materials ; Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium held in Kazimierz Dolny, Poland, 23-27 May 2005

This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium. The main aim of the Symposium was to discuss the basic principles of damage growth and fracture processes in different types of composites: ceramic, polymer and metal matrix composites, cement and bituminous composites and wood. Nowadays, it is widely recognized that important macroscopic properties like the macroscopic stiffness and strength, are governed by processes that occur at one to several scales below the level of observation starting from nanoscale.

Issues in Theoretical Diversity : Persistence, Composition, and Time

Our world is full of composite objects that persist through time: dogs, persons, chairs and rocks. But in virtue of what do a bunch of little objects get to compose some bigger object, and how does that bigger object persist through time? This book aims to answer these questions, but it does so by looking at accounts of composition and persistence through a new methodological lens. It asks the question: what does it take for two theories to be genuinely different, and how can we know whether what seems like metaphysical disagreement is really just semantic disagreement

Complex Motion ; 1st International Workshop, IWCM 2004, Günzburg, Germany, October 12-14, 2004, Revised Papers

The world we live in is a dynamic one: we explore it by moving through it, and many of the objects which we are interested in are also moving. Trafic, for instance, is an example of a domain where detecting and processing visual motion is of vital interest, both in a metaphoric as well as in a purely literal sense. Visual communication is another important example of an area of science which is dominated by the need to measure, understand, and represent visual motion in an eficient way. Visual motion is a subject of research which forces the investigator to deal with complexity; complexity in the sense of facing efiects of motion in a very large diversity of forms, starting from analyzing simple motion in a changing envir- ment (illumination, shadows, . . . ), under adverse observation conditions, such as bad signal-to-noiseratio (low illumination, small-scaleprocesses, low-dosex-ray, etc. ), covering also multiple motions of independent objects, occlusions, and - ing as far as dealing with objects which are complex in themselves (articulated objects such as bodies of living beings). The spectrum of problems includes, but does not end at, objects which are not ‘bodies’ at all, e. g. , when anal- ing fiuid motion, cloud motion, and so on. Analyzing the motion of a crowd in a shopping mall or in an airport is a further example that implies the need to struggle against the problems induced by complexity.

Complex Inorganic Solids : Structural, Stability, and Magnetic Properties of Alloys

One the key aspects of this volume is to cut across the traditional taxonomy of disciplines in the study of alloys. Hence there has been a deliberate attempt to integrate the different approaches taken towards alloys as a class of materials in different fields, ranging from geology to metallurgical engineering. The emphasis of this book is to highlight commonalities between different fields with respect to how alloys are studied. The topics in this book fall into several themes, which suggest a number of different classification schemes. We have chosen a scheme that classifies the papers in the volume into the categories Microstructural Considerations, Ordering, Kinetics and Diffusion, Magnetic Considerations and Elastic Considerations. The book has juxtaposed apparently disparate approaches to similar physical processes, in the hope of revealing a more dynamic character of the processes under consideration. This monograph will invigorate new kinds of discussion and reveal challenges and new avenues to the description and prediction of properties of materials in the solid state and the conditions that produce them

Cirrhosis and New Treatment

The liver organ in the human body is located in the abdominal-pelvic space below the diaphragm. It is responsible for metabolic functions. This research talks about the liver anatomy and its functions as well as the liver cirrhosis that defined as the histological development of regenerative nodules surrounded by fibrous bands in response to chronic liver injury that leads to portal hypertension and end stage liver disease. Recent advances in the understanding of the natural history and pathophysiology of cirrhosis, and in treatment of its complications, resulting in improved management, quality of life and life expectancy of cirrhotic patients. At present, liver transplantation remains the only curative option for a selected group of patients, but pharmacological therapies that can halt progression to decompensated cirrhosis or even reverse cirrhosis are currently being developed.

Chiral Diazaligands for Asymmetric Synthesis

The use of phosphine derivatives has historically induced the tremendous development of catalysis (both non-asymmetric and asymmetric). Although the chemistry of amines is more documented, the use of nitrogen-containing ligands only appeared recently. Nevertheless, during the last ten years, the results describing chiral diamine preparations and their uses in asymmetric catalysis and synthesis are increasing faster than their phosphorus counterparts. The reader will find in this volume the most recent methods for the synthesis of chiral diamines as well as their applications in asymmetric catalysis of CC bond formation. Particular attention will be given to spartein and derivatives of such diamines. Recently, the particular properties and the chemistry of amines allowed to obtain catalysts easy to separate and recycle and new types of ligands such as diaminocarbenes, ureas and thioureas. Finally, the complexing properties of some diamines allowed the formation of complexes with chirality "at the metal " which is of major theoretical interest and presents numerous potential applications.

Children's diabetes

Diabetes in infants, toddlers, older children, and adolescents poses serious physical, mental, and emotional challenges. Striking a balance among hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia, growth/development, and other life factors is not easy for health care providers, patients, or families. In addition, personal, family, or environmental conditions present before the onset of diabetes may compound the delicate balance needed to maintain good glycemic control. Therefore, there is a great need, especially at the time of initial diagnosis, to assess the developmental, behavioral, and psychosocial history of children with diabetes and their families.

Chemokine biology : Basic research and clinical application ; Vol.1 : Immunobiology of chemokines

The discovery of interleukin-8 close to 20 years ago initiated a new field of research touching on many aspects of immunology and inflammation. Interleukin-8 is just one member of a large class of structurally related chemoattractant proteins, known as chemokines. Chemokines are involved in the traffic control of leukocytes, which bear the corresponding chemokine receptors on their surfaces. Today, it is clear that chemokines affect all aspects of immunology and even many unrelated fields, such as tissue development and tumor cell metastasis. Their fundamental contributions to chronic inflammatory diseases make them a principal target for the development of novel, anti-inflammatory therapeutics.
