Les infections intra-abdominales aiguës = Acute intra-abdominal infections
Paradoxically, serious intra-abdominal infections are the forgotten ones in the world of infectious diseases. Paradoxical, because they are very common pathologies, affecting all age groups of the population and often life-threatening; paradoxical, because they concern many medical specialties through intensive care, gastroenterology, hepatology, imaging, infectious diseases, emergencies and surgery. Hence the need, thanks to an interdisciplinary collaboration, to publish a book in French bringing together all infectious abdominal pathologies, thus offering a synthesis of recent data from the literature in this field. This document should allow the various specialties concerned to find updates integrating the latest clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic data. Specialty interns and practitioners in the field will find something to establish an effective and up-to-date strategy for the management of patients with these pathologies, the high incidence of which and the severity of which is too often overlooked, it is important to remember.
Les fonctions sphinctériennes = Sphincter functions
This book on Sphincter functions provides an update on a very topical subject, urinary and anal incontinence. Divided into three parts, it first deals with fundamental aspects, whether anatomical, physiological or clinical. The explorations of the various urinary and anorectal functions are described with electrophysiological, manometric, urodynamic tests as well as imaging. The second part is devoted to the pathology with all the dysfunctions that we encounter in daily practice. Urinary and anal incontinence, dysuria and retention, neurological sphincter disorders, dysfunctions in pregnant women and children are discussed. The last part takes stock of treatments, whether pharmacological, rehabilitative or surgical. This work, which contains a considerable amount of information, will undoubtedly be of interest to many medical specialists (physicians in physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurologists, gastroenterologists, gynecologists, general practitioners, pediatricians), surgeons (urologists, gynecological surgeons, surgeons). digestive) whether they are in training or already involved in the management of perineal disability. Other health professionals will find reference material there (nurses, physiotherapists, midwives).
Les douleurs abdominales en questions : Rôle physiopathologique de la sensibilité viscérale = Abdominal pain in question : The pathophysiological role of visceral sensitivity
The gut-brain axis refers to the network of nerve pathways that connect the myenteric plexus, the veritable "gut brain," to the central nervous system. Nearly 80% of these neurons are sensory neurons, and the afferent pathways that transmit information from the digestive tract to the central nervous system play a crucial role in the physiological regulation of digestive functions, as well as in certain pathological conditions. A large majority of these sensations remain unconscious and give rise to reflex responses. Only those requiring a conscious response reach the level of awareness in a normal state (hunger, thirst, the urge to defecate). In pathological situations, the same is true for painful sensations of digestive origin. Functional bowel disorders are a frequent reason for consultation. Their pathophysiology is now based on a model integrating the various etiological factors around the brain-gut axis. These patients frequently present with visceral hypersensitivity, which manifests as an increased perception of digestive sensations, notably the onset of pain in response to stimuli that are not painful in normal subjects. Recognizing the role of visceral hypersensitivity has made it possible to explain the mechanism of action of medications used to treat functional bowel disorders and paves the way for the development of new molecules acting on digestive afferents. In this book, we will describe the anatomical and physiological basis for understanding the concept of visceral sensitivity and the role of digestive afferents in the pathophysiology of acute and chronic abdominal pain, particularly irritable bowel syndrome.
Leonhard Euler
Euler was not only by far the most productive mathematician in the history of mankind, but also one of the greatest scholars of all time. He attained, like only a few scholars, a degree of popularity and fame which may well be compared with that of Galilei, Newton, or Einstei .This book is based in part on unpublished sources and comes right out of the current research on Euler. It is entirely free of formulae as it has been written for a broad audience with interests in the history of culture and science.

Legitimacy Needs as Drivers of Business Exit
A diversified firm’s withdrawal from a business unit, i.e. business exit, is a significant phenomenon in management practice. Although divestitures are highly relevant in practice, the acquisition of business units attracts much more attention in strategic management research. Carolin Decker develops and empirically applies a framework in which business exits serve the purpose of re-establishing a firm’s previously harmed legitimacy. She suggests four types of legitimacy needs that are to be satisfied with the divestiture of a business unit and the simultaneous pursuit of strategic reorientation. The author tests the theoretical framework with secondary data on 213 business exits. Her findings support the idea that legitimacy needs drive the likelihood of fit-enhancing business exits in divesting firms.

Learning, philosophy, and African citizenship
This book discusses and addresses the compelling questions concerning the ideals of citizenship, the processes of learning to fulfill these ideals, and possibilities of education in fostering citizenship. Rather than advocating for one framework, the authors demonstrate the continuously contested nature of the concept of citizenship as theoretically discussed and practically experienced. The monograph combines, in an unconventional way, selected philosophical accounts and everyday experiences from certain locations in Tanzania and Uganda.

Lead-free Soldering
The push toward lead-free soldering in computers, cell phones and other electronic and electrical devices has taken on a greater urgency as laws have been passed or are pending in the United States, the European Union and Asia which ban lead-bearing solder. These new restrictions on hazardous substances are changing the way electronic devices are assembled, and specifically affect process engineering, manufacturing and quality assurance. Lead-Free Soldering offers in a single volume a broad collection of practical techniques for lead-free soldering design and manufacture, which up to now have been scattered in difficult-to-find scholarly sources. The book includes the latest information on proposed changes to lead-free standards, and up-to-date analysis of government and legislative activities and regulations in North America, Europe and Asia.

The various consequences on the anatomy and physiology of the female genitalia, as well as male, of children exposed in utero are reviewed. The impact on girls is greater than on boys: modification of the uterine cervix, reduction in the volume of the uterus with its consequences on fertility and the progress of pregnancies, risk of cancer of the vagina and the cervix. . The potential repercussions on the third generation are analyzed from experimental studies. Finally, the medico-legal implication is studied from the various trials that took place in the United States and from the first French trial that took place in Nanterre in November 2003. This work is the result of the collaboration of several experts recognized for their competence in this field. It will be of interest to all obstetrician gynecologists, urologists, but also public health physicians and midwives.
Le dépistage du cancer du sein : un enjeu de santé publique = Breast cancer screening: a public health issue
Fifteen years after the first experiments, the breast cancer screening program was rolled out in France in 2004. It is aimed at more than eight million women aged 50 to 74. Public health action on such a scale is exemplary in Europe and especially in France where the health system is not centralized. The new edition of this book takes stock of the current state of the program and its initial results. It updates technical and radiological aspects, assessment indicators, communication and forensic problems and finally the progress of foreign programs. The history of the French program is detailed from the 1990s until 2006, with the publication of the latest version of the specifications by the Directorate General of Health. The short and medium term objectives are re-specified: to increase the participation of women, to retain them and to further improve the quality of practices. The challenge is to combine the performance of screening and therapeutic management to finally achieve a clear reduction in mortality, which has remained stable for twenty years.
Le dépistage du cancer du col de lutérus = Cervical cancer screening
Each year, cervical cancer kills approximately 1,000 people in France, making it the fifth leading cause of cancer death and the eighth most common cancer among women. While eradicating cervical cancer is not possible, a national screening campaign should significantly reduce its incidence. This campaign should be based, in particular, on the systematic use of Pap smears. Conventional Pap smears have already reduced the number of invasive cancers by more than 50%. Improving them requires optimizing their sensitivity. This book details the natural history of cervical cancer, its incidence and mortality, and the various aspects of screening: general principles, the French screening program, the different types of Pap smears, the role and contribution of the HPV test, the management of abnormal Pap smears, the role of colposcopy, and the follow-up of treated women. It is intended for all those involved in this screening : specialist interns and gynecologists, pathologists and biologists, public health physicians, but also general practitioners whose role in screening is privileged since they are at the forefront of medical demand.
Le dépistage du cancer colorectal : État des lieux et perspectives = Colorectal cancer screening: Current status and perspectives
Prevention and screening are two major challenges for Public Health to reduce cancer mortality in our country. Screening for colorectal cancer is therefore quite exemplary. The number one cancer in both sexes in France, its incidence continues to increase due to the aging of the population. Its mortality remains high, in the order of fifty percent, despite the major therapeutic advances made in recent years. Preceded by a precancerous lesion - the adenomatous polyp, which can be removed by colonoscopy - colorectal cancer is also curable at the early stage. Finally, it can be the subject of a screening strategy, the impact of which has been demonstrated today on the reduction in mortality, when it is detected before any symptom by a simple test for blood in the stool followed by , in case of positivity, by a total colonoscopy. This book takes stock of the scientific rationale and the state of play of organized colorectal cancer screening in France. It is also an opportunity to discuss emerging techniques and strategies that can help improve the results of this screening if they prove their superiority over the current strategy. Intended primarily for doctors, this book is also intended for healthcare professionals and all those who, concerned about their health, have a proactive attitude in terms of screening and preventing this cancer.
Le choix bayésien: Principes et pratique
Covers the so-called Bayesian approach to statistical inference and in particular its decision-making aspects. The bases of this axiomatics (choice of the a priori, optimal decisions, tests and regions of confidence) are discussed in detail, as well as more recent openings of Bayesian analysis such as the choice of models, the use of numerical methods. Stochastic approximation (MCMC), the theory of noninformative laws (Berger-Bernardo axioms) and the relation to the classical theory of admissibility. Each chapter is completed by an extensive series of exercises of increasing difficulty and by bibliographical notes on the themes addressed. This book can be used in a Master's program in Applied Mathematics, Biometrics, Econometrics or any other program that uses quantitative information processing techniques. It only requires a basic course in probability theory and mathematical statistics as a preliminary.
