Approaches to Metaphysics

Today, when systematic philosophy - and reason itself - are challenged both outside of and within philosophy, is it still possible to do metaphysics? This volume provides a broad perspective on contemporary approaches to the nature and the fundamental questions of metaphysics. Drawing on scholars from continental Europe, Asia, Canada, the United States, and Great Britain, and representing a variety of philosophical cultures and traditions, this volume surveys and extends work in metaphysics and its implications for broader philosophical concerns (e.g., in ethics and social philosophy, in mathematics and logic, and in epistemology). It also addresses such questions as the role of history and historicity in undertaking metaphysics, the nature of metaphysics, the priority of metaphysics over epistemology, and the challenges of empiricism and postmodernism.

Antimicrobial peptides and human disease

Microbes are in our midst soon after birth. Thankfully, the number of harmless (and often beneficial) microbes far outnumber those that would do us harm. Our ability to ward-off pathogens in our environment, including those that can colonize our exterior and/or interior surfaces, depends on the integrative action of the innate and adaptive immunity systems. This volume of CTMI, entitled Antimicrobial Peptides and Human Disease, is dedicated to the role of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in the innate host defense system of homo sapiens.

Anti-fragile ICT Systems

Introduces a novel approach to the design and operation of large ICT systems. It views the technical solutions and their stakeholders as complex adaptive systems and argues that traditional risk analyses cannot predict all future incidents with major impacts. To avoid unacceptable events, it is necessary to establish and operate anti-fragile ICT systems that limit the impact of all incidents, and which learn from small-impact incidents how to function increasingly well in changing environments. The book applies four design principles and one operational principle to achieve anti-fragility for different classes of incidents. It discusses how systems can achieve high availability, prevent malware epidemics, and detect anomalies. Analyses of Netflix’s media streaming solution, Norwegian telecom infrastructures, e-government platforms, and Numenta’s anomaly detection software show that cloud computing is essential to achieving anti-fragility for classes of events with negative impacts.

Anticipatory Behavior in Adaptive Learning Systems : From Brains to Individual and Social Behavior

Anticipatory behavior in adaptive learning systems is steadily gaining the - terest of scientists, although many researchers still do not explicitly consider the actual anticipatory capabilities of their systems. The introductory chapter of this volume therefore does not only provide an overview of the contributions included in this volume but also proposes a taxonomy of how anticipatory mechanisms can improve adaptive behavior and learning in cognitive systems. During the workshop it became clear that ant- ipations are involved in various cognitive processes that range from individual anticipatory mechanisms to social anticipatory behavior.

Antarctic ecosystems : Environmental contamination, climate change, and human impact

This volume provides an overview of climate change data, its effects on the structure and functioning of Antarctic ecosystems, and the occurrence and cycling of persistent contaminants. It discusses the unique physico-chemical characteristics of the Antarctic environment, ecophysiological adaptations of terrestrial and marine organisms, the transfer of contaminants in pelagic and neritic food chains and the possible consequences for animals at higher trophic levels.

Another side of drugs

Drug interactions remain an important consequence of pharmacologic intervention. It is clear that the pharmacologic response of a drug can be markedly influenced by concurrent administration of another therapeutic agent or food. These interactions may result in a decreased therapeutic effect or in an increase in the amount and extent of untoward reactions. Despite the well-described and real clinical consequences of certain drug interactions, this aspect of patient care often continues to be overlooked.

Android smart health monitoring system

Recent years have witnessed an increasing interest in the application of machine learning to clinical informatics and healthcare system never forgetting that the data also states that half of the world's population uses mobile devices. Despite of the existence of tons of applications, algorithms, and systems, the achievement of prescribing proper food that is suitable for patient health case based on face health status, height, weight, daily calories etc.., wasn’t achieved yet because of the lack of knowledge in food therapy process. Our system provides the service of food suggestion based on the input that is inserted by the user in sign-up form which are (height, weight, age, etc….).

Analytical scientists in pharmaceutical product development : Task management and practical knowledge

Explains task management concepts and outlines practical knowledge to help pharmaceutical analytical scientists become productive and enhance their career. •Presents broad topics such as product development process, regulatory requirement, task and project management, innovation mindset, molecular recognition, separation science, degradation chemistry, and statistics. •Provokes thinking through figures, tables, and case studies to help understand how the various functions integrate and how analytical development can work efficiently and effectively by applying science and creativity in their work. •Discusses how to efficiently develop a fit-for-purpose HPLC method without screening dozens of columns, gradients, or mobile phase combinations each time, since the extra effort may not provide enough of a benefit to justify the cost and time in a fast-paced product development environment.

Analysis of phylogenetics and evolution with R

This book integrates a wide variety of data analysis methods into a single and flexible interface: the R language. This open source language is available for a wide range of computer systems and has been adopted as a computational environment by many authors of statistical software. Adopting R as a main tool for phylogenetic analyses will ease the workflow in biologists' data analyses, ensure greater scientific repeatability, and enhance the exchange of ideas and methodological developments.

Analgesia

Analgesics are among the oldest drugs described, albeit not necessarily for medicinaluse. Forexample, theSumeriansisolatedopioids(probablyfortheir euphoric effects) in the third millennium b. c. and the use of willow bark (salicin) for fever was ?rst reported in the eighteenth century. Both types of drugs are still in use, but today they are supplemented by a wide array of substances ranging from antidepressants to ion channel blockers. Not all of theseareprescribedbyphysicians. Manycompoundsaresoldoverthecounter and thus available to the public for self-medication. As a result, analgesics are also the most misused class of drugs and are the culprit for a multitude of healthproblemsdueto untoward sideeffects. An Introduction to Navier-Stokes Equation and Oceanography

The Introduction to Navier-Stokes Equation and Oceanography corresponds to a graduate course in mathematics, taught at Carnegie Mellon University in the spring of 1999. Comments were added to the lecture notes distributed to the students, as well as short biographical information for all scientists mentioned in the text, the purpose being to show that the creation of scientific knowledge is an international enterprise, and who contributed to it, from where, and when. The goal of the course is to teach a critical point of view concerning the partial differential equations of continuum mechanics, and to show the need for developing new adapted mathematical tools.

An Introduction to Efficiency and Productivity Analysis

It is designed to be a "first port of call" for people wishing to study efficiency and productivity analysis. The book provides an accessible introduction to the four principal methods involved: econometric estimation of average response models; index numbers; data envelopment analysis (DEA); and stochastic firontier analysis (SFA). For each method, we provide a detailed introduction to the basic concepts, give some simple numerical examples, discuss some of the more important extensions to the basic methods, and provide references for further reading. In addition, we provide a number of detailed empirical applications using real-world data.
