Smart cement : Development, testing, modeling and real-time monitoring
Over three billion metric tons of cement are produced annually worldwide, making concrete the most extensively used construction material. Self-sensing, or smart, cement allows real-time monitoring of performance through the entire service life of a concrete structure, for the detection of changing stresses, contamination, excessive temperature, gas leaks and pre-seismic activity. This is achieved by adding a very small proportion of conductive or semi-conductive fibers, such as carbon fibers to the bulk cement, making it piezoresistive, and enabling changes in the concrete’s electrical resistivity in response to shear stress and strain to be monitored.

Shape Analysis and Structuring
Several techniques have been developed in the literature for processing different aspects of the geometry of shapes, for representing and manipulating a shape at different levels of detail, and for describing a shape at a structural level as a concise, part-based, or iconic model. Such techniques are used in many different contexts, such as industrial design, biomedical applications, entertainment, environmental monitoring, or cultural heritage. This book covers a variety of topics related to preserving and enhancing shape information at a geometric level, and to effectively capturing the structure of a shape by identifying relevant shape components and their mutual relationships.

This book has outlined the fundamentals, analytical concepts, modelling and design issues, technical details and practical applications of different types of sensors, electromagnetic, capacitive, ultrasonic, vision, Terahertz, displacement, fibre-optic and so on. The book addresses the identification, modeling, selection, operation and integration of a wide variety of sensors, demonstrates the concepts of different sensors technology through simulation, design and real implementations, discusses the design and fabrication of high performance modern sensors technology, presents a selection of cutting-edge applications.
Sensor Networks and Configuration : Fundamentals, Standards, Platforms, and Applications
Advances in networking influence many kinds of monitoring and control systems in the most dramatic way. Sensor network and configuration falls under the category of modern networking systems. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has emerged and caters to the need for real-world applications. Methodology and design of WSN represents a broad research topic with applications in many sectors such as industry, home, computing, agriculture, environment, and so on, based on the adoption of fundamental principles and the state-of-the-art technology. WSN has been preferred choice for the design and development of next generation monitoring and control systems. This book incorporates a selection of research and development papers. Its scope is on history and background, underlying design methodology, application domains and recent developments. The readers will be able to understand the underlying technology, philosophy, concepts, ideas, and principles, with regard to broader areas of sensor network. Aspects of sensor network in terms of basics, standardization, design process, practice, techniques, platforms, and experimental results have been presented in proper order.
Sensing Issues in Civil Structural Health Monitoring
Civil infrastructure systems are generally the most expensive assets in any country, and these systems are deteriorating at an alarming rate. In addition, these systems have a long service life in comparison to most other commercial products. active research in the design of new highway bridges is focused on a number of specialty areas, including the replacement of steel reinforcing bars in concrete deck slabs by randomly distributed low-modulus fibers, and the replacement of steel prestressing cables for concrete components by tendons comprising super-strong fibers. Research is also being conducted on using FRPs to repair and strengthen existing structures.
Self-healing construction materials : Fundamentals, monitoring and large scale applications
Provides a thorough overview of all techniques for producing self-healing construction materials. Construction materials (cement-based, bituminous, metals, and alloys) are prone to cracking, which with the progress of time can lead to compromising of the structural integrity of critical infrastructure. Self-healing materials form a new class of materials that have inbuilt engineered properties to counteract damage and repair it before it becomes critical. The methods for monitoring, modeling, and assessing self-healing are also reviewed. The final section of the book discusses the future outlook and potential extension of self-healing concepts to other materials (e.g., heritage structures and soils).
Selected Topics in Dynamics and Control of Chemical and Biological Processes
In view of the rapid changes in requirements, it has became necessary to place at the reader's disposal a book dealing with basic and advanced concepts and techniques for the monitoring and control of chemical and biochemical processes, as well as with the aspects of the implementation of these different robust techniques. To make the ideas covered in this book accessible to a larger audience, the authors attempted to present a balanced view of the theoretical and practical issues of control systems. Different cases are presented to illustrate the controller and observer design procedures and their dynamic effects in the closed-loop. The book consists of peer-reviewed contributions and aims the integration of recent research by a group of colleagues working on theory and practice of the process control. In order to embrace as chemical as control engineering themes, authors have proposed different kind of processes and distinct control scopes. This book is an effort to incorporate and link both theory-practice and chemical-control engineering.
Security in ad-hoc and sensor networks ; 1st European Workshop, ESAS 2004, Heidelberg, Germany, August 6, 2004, Revised Selected Papers
Ad hoc and sensor networks are making their way from research to real-world deployments. Body and personal-area networks, intelligent homes, environmental monitoring or inter-vehicle communications: there is almost nothing left that is not going to be smart and networked. While a great amount of research has been devoted to the pure networking aspects, ad hoc and sensor networks will not be successfully deployed if security, dependability, and privacy issues are not addressed adequately.
Scalable Infrastructure for Distributed Sensor Networks
The book tackles the problems that must be addressed before sensors are deployed for surveillance, tracking, and other monitoring applications and the solutions described are scalable for large and dense sensor networks. Included in a comprehensive treatment of the topic are: techniques for deterministic sensor deployment for applications such as smart buildings and aircraft structural monitoring; techniques for ad hoc deployment for sensors.
Sampling Methods, Remote Sensing and GIS Multiresource Forest Inventory
The book presents the state-of-the-art of forest resources assessments and monitoring and provides links to practical applications of forest and natural resource assessment programs. It gives an overview of current forest inventory systems and discusses forest mensuration, sampling techniques, remote sensing applications, geographic and forest information systems, and multi-resource forest inventory. In addition to the assessment of the productive functions of forests, particular attention is given to the quantification of non-wood goods and services and the relationship of forests to other landscape elements. All methodology is presented in the framework of sustainable management of the multiple functions that forests provide to the natural environment and to society.
Sampling for Natural Resource Monitoring
The book presents the statistical knowledge and methodology of sampling and data analysis useful for spatial inventory and monitoring of natural resources. The authors omitted all theory not essential for applications or for basic understanding. This presentation is broader than standard statistical texts, as the authors pay much attention to how statistical methodology can be employed and embedded in real-life spatial inventory and monitoring projects. Thus they discuss in detail how efficient sampling schemes and monitoring systems can be designed in view of the aims and constraints of the project.
