Telecommunications Planning : Innovations in Pricing, Network Design and Management

Focuses on the latest methodological developments in three key areas---pricing of telecommunications services, network design, and resource allocation. These three elements are most relevant to current telecommunications planning. The first five chapters cover global deregulation of the telecommunications industry, effective pricing and revenue management, as well as an understanding of competitive pressures are key factors that will improve revenue in telecommunications companies. These chapters present some novel ideas related to pricing (including auction-based pricing of network bandwidth) and modeling competition in the industry. The next seven chapters outline what successful telecommunications companies of the future will need to do in order to minimize their costs and still meet customer expectations. In this context the optimal design/provisioning of telecommunication networks plays an important role. These chapters focus on network design for a wide range of technologies including SONET, SDH, WDM, and MPLS. They include the latest research developments related to the modeling and solving of network design problems. The final six chapters provide insightful solutions to several resource allocation problems. Day-to-day management/control of telecommunications networks is dependant upon the optimal allocation of resources.

System-Level Design Techniques for Energy-Efficient Embedded Systems addresses the development and validation of co-synthesis techniques that allow an effective design of embedded systems with low energy dissipation. The book provides an overview of a system-level co-design flow, illustrating through examples how system performance is influenced at various steps of the flow including allocation, mapping, and scheduling. The book places special emphasis upon system-level co-synthesis techniques for architectures that contain voltage scalable processors, which can dynamically trade off between computational performance and power consumption. Throughout the book, the introduced co-synthesis techniques, which target both single-mode systems and emerging multi-mode applications, are applied to numerous benchmarks and real-life examples including a realistic smart phone.

Systematic Design for Emergence in Cellular Nonlinear Networks : With Applications in Natural Computing and Signal Processing

Cellular nonlinear networks are naturally inspired computing architectures where complex dynamic behaviors may emerge as a result of the local or prescribed connectivity among simple cells. Functionally, much like in biology, each cell is defined by a few bits of information called a gene. This book proposes a systematic framework for measuring emergence and a systematic design method to locate computationally meaningful genes in a reasonable computing time. Programs and application examples are provided so that the reader may easily understand the new concepts and develop her own specific experiments. An accessible language recommends it to a large audience including specialists from various interdisciplinary fields who may benefit from a better understanding of emergence and its applications to their specific field.

Surgical Treatment of Hilar and Intrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma

Cholangiocarcinoma is the second most frequent primary neoplasm of the liver and its incidence is increasing in Western countries. These neoplasms arise from the biliary tract and can be categorized according to their anatomical location as intrahepatic and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas. Their prognosis is poor and most patients are unfortunately not suitable for curative resection at the time of diagnosis, due to advanced stage of tumor. Stress and immunity

Many people have experienced the connection between stress and getting sick. Colds, influenza, herpes and allergies seem worse when we are severely stressed at work or in the home. Others are never sick until they go on vacation (that is, after the stress is over), and then they spend the whole time fighting the virus. Because of intrinsic connections like these, many researchers are today exploring whether (and how) stress and illness are actually linked. One specific focus of this research is to study the effects of stress on the immune systems; after all, if stress affects immunity, that would be one way in which stress could contribute to illness. The function of the immune system is to protect us from organisms that cause disease, and from other materials that would be harmful to the body. Cells of the immune system (i.e., white blood cells) circulate throughout the body in the blood and are also located in various organs, including the bone marrow, thymus, lymph nodes and spleen. There are a number of different kinds of white blood cells, but the most important in this context are lymphocytes.

Street-Level Architecture: The Past, Present and Future of Interactive Frontages

Provides the tools to maintain and rebuild the interaction between architecture and public space. Despite the best intentions of designers and planners, interactive frontages have dwindled over the past century in Europe and North America. This book demonstrates why even our best intentions for interactive frontages are currently unable to turn a swelling tide of economic and technological evolution, land consolidation, introversion, stratification, and contagious decline. It uses these lessons to offer concrete locational, programming, design, and management strategies to maximize street-level interaction and trust between street-level architecture, its inhabitants, and the city. Demonstrates that designers, developers, planners, and managers ultimately have to create the right preconditions for inhabitants and passersby to bring frontages to life. These preconditions connect architecture to its urban, social, economical, and technological context.

Strategic Trading in Illiquid Markets

The Area of Research and the Object of Investigation In this thesis we will investigate trading strategies in illiquid markets from a market microstructure perspective. Market microstructure is the academic term for the branch of financial economics that investigates trading and the organization of security markets, Historically, exchanges evolved as a location, where those interested in buy­ ing or selling securities could meet physically to transact. Thus, traditionally security trading was organized on exchange floors, where so-called dealers arranged all trades and provided liquidity by quoting prices at which they were willing buy or sell. Consequently, the initial surge of the market mi­ crostructure literature focused predominantly on this type of market design, which is often referred to as quote-driven. Nowadays, the interest is shifting towards order-driven markets. Beginning with the Toronto Stock Exchange in the mid 1970s and increasing in fre­ quency and scope, this market structure has emerged as the preeminent form of security trading worldwide. In order-driven markets, exchanges arrange trades by matching public orders, often by employing automatic execution systems. Introduction A major difference between a quote-driven and an order-driven market arises from the transparency pre- and post-trade.

Strategic Closed-Loop Supply Chain Management

Closed loops depict supply chains for which Original Equipement Manufacturer reintegrate their returned products into their own production network. While the reverse logistics research has extensively addressed the technical aspects of product reintegration, very few insights are available on whether OEMs should commit themselves to a closed-loop. The structure of the monograph is aligned to the decision-making process of Original Equipment Manufacturers willing to investigate the potential of closed-loops. This decision-making process is structured around fundamental questions managers are expected to answer prior to running a circular supply chain: Does a closed-loop fit with the corporate objectives? Is it profitable to run a closed-loop? How should OEMs deal with free-riders’ competition? Which product/technology/location setup leads to a profit-maximizing supply chain? The planning framework is finally applied to two case studies from the tire and the computer industry.

Start-up business for bus tracking

U bus is a university bus tracking system designed to provide safe, efficient, and real-time transportation services for students. the application serves three main user types : students, drivers, and administrators. Each user has a dedicated interface to view and manage bus trips, track locations, and receive notifications. The system supports bilingual functionality (Arabic-English) and includes features such as emergency alerts (SOS), detailed bus information, and scheduling tools. The project was developed using agile methodology to accommodate changing user requirements and ensure continuous improvement.

Spectral Finite Element Method : Wave Propagation, Diagnostics and Control in Anisotropic and Inhomogeneous Structures

Discuss the different types of SFEM for regular and damaged 1-D and 2-D waveguides, various solution techniques, different methods of detecting the presence of damages and their locations, and different methods available to actively control the wave propagation responses. The theory is supported by tables, figures and graphs; all the numerical examples are designed to bring out the essential wave behavior in these complex structures.
