The contributed papers were selected from almost 200 full draft papers by the Program Committee members.

Experimental Aspects of Quantum Computing
Practical quantum computing still seems more than a decade away, and researchers have not even identified what the best physical implementation of a quantum bit will be. There is a real need in the scientific literature for a dialog on the topic of lessons learned and looming roadblocks. Enterprise interoperability : New challenges and approaches
Interoperability: the ability of a system or a product to work with other systems or products without special effort from the user is a key issue in manufacturing and industrial enterprise generally. It is fundamental to the production of goods and services quickly and at low cost at the same time as maintaining levels of quality and customisation. Interoperability is achieved if internal and external collaborators can interact on at least three levels: data, applications and business enterprise (through the architecture of an enterprise model and making allowance for the semantics of both partners). Not only a problem of software and IT technologies, it implies support for communication and transactions between different organisations that must be based on shared business references. Today, a new and important consideration must be taken into account – economic business evaluation and the definition of dissemination policy.

Embedded System Design
Embedded System Design starts with an introduction into the area and a survey of specification languages for embedded systems. A brief overview is provided of hardware devices used for embedded systems and also presents the essentials of software design for embedded systems. Real-time operating systems and real-time scheduling are covered briefly. Techniques for implementing embedded systems are also discussed, using hardware/software codesign. It closes with a survey on validation techniques. Embedded System Design can be used as a text book for courses on embedded systems and as a source which provides pointers to relevant material in the area for PhD students and teachers. The book assumes a basic knowledge of information processing hardware and software.

Engineering the Knowledge Society (EKS) - Event of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) This book is the result of a joint event of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) and the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) held during the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva, Switzerland, December 11 - 12, 2003. The organisation was in the hands of Mr. Raymond Morel of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW). Information Technology (or Information and Communication Technology) cannot be seen as a separate entity. Its application should support human development and this application has to be engineered. Education plays a central role in the engineering of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for human support.

Designing Organizations : 21st Century Approaches
The design of organizations has been an ongoing concern of management theory and practice over the past several decades. Over this time, there has been little change in the fundamental theory, principles and concepts of Organization Design (OD). Recently organizational life has changed dramatically with the advent of: new communication systems, adaptive mechanisms, information technology, knowledge management systems, innovation processes and more. This book systemically examines these developments and their impact on OD with contributions from leading scholars in the area. Peer-to-peer (P2P) paradigm lends itself to constructing large-scale complex, adaptive, - tonomous and heterogeneous database and information systems, endowed with clearly speci?ed and di?erential capabilities to negotiate, bargain, coordinate, and self-organize the information exchanges in large-scale networks. This vision will have a radical impact on the structure of complex organizations (business, scienti?c, or otherwise) and on the emergence and the formation of social c- munities, and on how the information is organized and processed. The P2P information paradigm naturally encompasses static and wireless connectivity, and static and mobile architectures. Wireless connectivity c- bined with the increasingly small and powerful mobile devices and sensors pose new challenges to as well as opportunities for the database community. Inf- mation becomes ubiquitous, highly distributed and accessible anywhere and at any time over highly dynamic, unstable networks with very severe constraints on the information management and processing capabilities.
