Molecular evolutionary models in drug discovery

Explores the application of evolutionary molecular models in drug discovery in which secondary metabolites play a fundamental role. Secondary metabolites are not produced in isolation, they are the result of the interaction of genes, metabolism and the environment. The book examines the role of secondary metabolites as leads in drug discovery and on the development of a rational bioprospecting model for new medicines based on the evolution of secondary metabolism. These evolutionary models are part of biological systems and are the most reliable expression of the functioning of living beings.

Modern Methods in the Calculus of Variations : L^p Spaces

This is the first of two books on methods and techniques in the calculus of variations. Contemporary arguments are used throughout the text to streamline and present in a unified way classical results, and to provide novel contributions at the forefront of the theory. This book addresses fundamental questions related to lower semicontinuity and relaxation of functionals within the unconstrained setting, mainly in L^p spaces. It prepares the ground for the second volume where the variational treatment of functionals involving fields and their derivatives will be undertaken within the framework of Sobolev spaces.

Modern Hematology : Biology and Clinical Management

The first chapters of this book contain a self-contained introduction to path integrals in Euclidean quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics. The resulting high-dimensional integrals can be estimated with the help of Monte Carlo simulations based on Markov processes. The most commonly used algorithms are presented in detail so as to prepare the reader for the use of high-performance computers as an “experimental” tool for this burgeoning field of theoretical physics. Several chapters are then devoted to an introduction to simple lattice field theories and a variety of spin systems with discrete and continuous spins, where the ubiquitous Ising model serves as an ideal guide for introducing the fascinating area of phase transitions. As an alternative to the lattice formulation of quantum field theories, variants of the flexible renormalization group methods are discussed in detail. Since, according to our present-day knowledge, all fundamental interactions in nature are described by gauge theories, the remaining chapters of the book deal with gauge theories without and with matter.

Modern avenues in metal-nucleic acid chemistry

Provides a timely overview of selected relevant developments in a field which previously had a pronounced focus on fundamental chemistry aspects such as coordination principles, structural chemistry, and consequences for biological processes and disease-related medicinal issues. More recently, also as a consequence of the advent of supramolecular chemistry, advancements in nanochemistry, and new bio-analytical methods, novel aspects of this field have emerged. MILS-25 gives a state-of-the-art account on the present state of research in this field, addressing, among others, porous materials, non-covalent interactions, stimuli-responsive bioconjugates, DNA-templated metal arrays and nanoclusters, genotyping, guanine quadruplexes, and riboswitches.

Models of the Atomic Nucleus

Models of the Atomic Nucleus is a largely non-technical introduction to nuclear theory – an attempt to explain the nucleus in a way that makes nuclear physics as comprehensible as chemistry or cell biology. Unlike many other scientific fields, the "popularization" of nuclear physics has not previously been successful because many fundamental issues remain controversial and a unified theory of nuclear structure has not yet been established. The theme developed in this book is that the many models of nuclear theory each provide a partial perspective on the nucleus and that the many models can in fact be integrated into a coherent whole and expressed in terms of a lattice of nucleons.

Modellistica Numerica per Problemi Differenziali = Numerical Modeling for Differential Problems

This text introduces the fundamental concepts for the numerical modeling of partial differential problems. We consider the classic linear elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic equations, but also other equations, such as those of diffusion and transport, of Navier-Stokes, and the conservation laws. Numerous physical examples underlying these equations are provided, their main mathematical properties are studied, then numerical resolution methods based on finite elements, finite differences, finite volumes and spectral methods are proposed and analyzed. In particular, the algorithmic and computer implementation aspects are discussed and some easy-to-use programs in C ++ language are provided. The text does not presuppose an advanced mathematical knowledge of partial differential equations: the strictly indispensable concepts in this regard are reported in the Appendix. The volume is therefore suitable for students of scientific degree courses (Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Information Sciences) and recommended for researchers from the academic and extra-academic world who want to approach this interesting branch of applied mathematics.

Modeling with Itô Stochastic Differential Equations

This modeling procedure is thoroughly explained and illustrated for randomly varying systems in population biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and finance. Introductory chapters present the fundamental concepts of random variables, stochastic processes, stochastic integration, and stochastic differential equations. These concepts are explained in a Hilbert space setting which unifies and simplifies the presentation. Computer programs, given throughout the text, are useful in solving representative stochastic problems. Analytical and computational exercises are provided in each chapter that complement the material in the text.

Modeling in Biopharmaceutics, Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics : Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Approaches

The state of the art in Biopharmaceutics, Pharmacokinetics, and Pharmacodynamics Modeling is presented in this book. It shows how advanced physical and mathematical methods can expand classical models in order to cover heterogeneous drug-biological processes and therapeutic effects in the body. The book is divided into four parts; the first deals with the fundamental principles of fractals, diffusion and nonlinear dynamics; the second with drug dissolution, release, and absorption; the third with empirical, compartmental, and stochastic pharmacokinetic models, and the fourth mainly with nonclassical aspects of pharmacodynamics. The classical models that have relevance and application to these sciences are also considered throughout. Many examples are used to illustrate the intrinsic complexity of drug administration related phenomena in the human, justifying the use of advanced modeling methods.

Modeling Foundations of Economic Property Rights Theory : An Axiomatic Analysis of Economic Agreements

The idea is to construct a kind of mathematical application in which any fundamental formal entity and/or operation has an empirical economic interpretation. This approach is seen as a way to cope with an extreme c- plexity of economic phenomena under consideration and requests for precise formulationofmodelswheremeaningfulanswersandsolutionsofproblemsare only those which are obtained rigorously. The proposed extensions in ma- ematical economics and property rights theory are to provide rich enough foundations to follow complexity of economic property rights in the exact way, and to identify where there is an appropriate method providing a- quate solution, and also to ?nd problems where in general there is no such methodology.

Model Based Inference in the Life Sciences : A Primer on Evidence

The abstract concept of "information" can be quantified and this has led to many important advances in the analysis of data in the empirical sciences. This text focuses on a science philosophy based on "multiple working hypotheses" and statistical models to represent them. The fundamental science question relates to the empirical evidence for hypotheses in this set—a formal strength of evidence. Kullback-Leibler information is the information lost when a model is used to approximate full reality. Hirotugu Akaike found a link between K-L information (a cornerstone of information theory) and the maximized log-likelihood (a cornerstone of mathematical statistics). This combination has become the basis for a new paradigm in model based inference. The text advocates formal inference from all the hypotheses/models in the a priori set—multimodel inference.

Mixed Finite Elements, Compatibility Conditions, and Applications : Lectures given at the C.I.M.E. Summer School held in Cetraro, Italy June 26–July 1, 2006

Since the early 70's, mixed finite elements have been the object of a wide and deep study by the mathematical and engineering communities. The fundamental role of this method for many application fields has been worldwide recognized and its use has been introduced in several commercial codes. An important feature of mixed finite elements is the interplay between theory and application. Discretization spaces for mixed schemes require suitable compatibilities, so that simple minded approximations generally do not work and the design of appropriate stabilizations gives rise to challenging mathematical problems.

Missions of universities : Past, present, future

provides an analysis of university missions over time and space. It starts out by presenting a governance framework focusing on the demands on universities set by regulators, market actors and scrutinizers. It examines organizational structures, population development, the fundamental tasks of universities, and internal governance structures. Next, offers a discussion of the idea and role of universities in society, exploring concepts such as autonomy and universality, and the university as a transformative institute. The next four chapters deal with the development of universities from medieval times, through the Renaissance, towards the research universities in the nineteenth century in Europe and the United States.
