This unique monograph introduces an important new area of control system research and presents some new methods for solving some typical problems in the field of sandwich nonlinear systems. Sandwiched nonsmooth nonlinearities such as dead-zone, hysteresis and backlash between dynamic blocks are presented, as well as continuous-time control designs. A framework for hybrid control is developed that is used to design control schemes for different cases of the control problem with required modifications. Friction compensation is addressed for systems with sandwiched friction along with sandwiched dynamics. An open problem of the control of sandwich nonlinear systems with actuator failures is introduced by a control design for an illustrative case.

Control Design Techniques in Power Electronics Devices

Collective Phenomena in Synchrotron Radiation Sources : Prediction, Diagnostics, Countermeasures

Magnetic Control of Tokamak Plasmas
The main topic of Magnetic Control of Tokamak Plasmas is the design of feedback control systems guaranteeing the stability of plasma equilibrium inside a tokamak and the regulation of the plasma position and shape during plasma pulses. Modelling and control details are presented, allowing the non-expert to understand the control problem. LCPC 2002 brought together over 60 researchers from academia and research institutions from many countries. The program of 26 papers was selected from 32 submissions. Each paper was reviewed by at least three Program Committee members and sometimes by additional reviewers. Prior to the workshop, revised versions of accepted papers were informally published on the workshop’s website and in a paper proceedings that was distributed at the meeting. This year, the workshopwas organizedinto sessions of papers on related topics, and each session consisted of two to three 30-minute presentations.Based on feedback from the workshop,the papers were revised and submitted for inclusion in the formal proceedings published in this volume. Two papers were presented at the workshop but later withdrawn from the ?nal proceedings by their authors. We were very lucky to have Bill Carlson from the Department of Defense give the LCPC 2002 keynote speech on “UPC: A C Language for Shared M- ory Parallel Programming.” Bill gave an excellent overview of the features and programming model of the UPC parallel programming language.
Kinetics of Water-Rock Interaction
Systems at the surface of the Earth are continually responding to energy inputs derived from solar radiation or from the radiogenic heat in the interior. These energy inputs drive plate movements and erosion, exposing metastable mineral phases at the Earth’s surface. In addition, these energy fluxes are harvested and transformed by living organisms. As long as these processes persist, chemical disequilibrium at the Earth’s surface will be perpetuated. Chemical disequilibrium is also driven by human activities related to production of food, extraction of water and energy resources, and burial of wastes. To understand how the surface of the Earth will change over time, we must understand the rates at which reactions occur and the chemical feedbacks that relate these reactions across extreme temporal and spatial scales. This book addresses fundamental and applied questions concerning the rates of water-rock interactions driven by tectonic, climatic, and anthropogenic forcings.

Contains the papers presented at the 10th Anniversary Workshop on Job Scheduling Strategies for Parallel Processing. The workshop was held in New York City, on June 13, 2004, at Columbia University, in conjunction with the SIGMETRICS 2004 conference. Although it is a workshop, the papers were conference-reviewed, with the full versions being read and evaluated by at least five and usually seven members of the Program Committee. We refer to it as a workshop because of the very fast turnaround time, the intimate nature of the actual presentations, and the ability of the authors to revise their papers after getting feedback from workshop attendees. On the other hand, it was actually a conference in that the papers were accepted solely on their merits as decided upon by the Program Committee.

Brain and Heart Dynamics
Despite the increasing awareness that neural mechanisms are the primary cause of cardiac disease and its progression, therapy continues to focus on end-organ protection and does not approach the neural core of the problem. Growing public health problems such as heart failure are still treated with autonomic drugs that are 30-40 years old and simply act on cardiac receptors. However, it has now been shown that the progression of ischemic heart disease to heart failure is mainly due to abnormal central responses to incipient cardiac disease, with neural activation the primary cause rather than the consequence of cardiac remodeling.
