Knowledge-Based Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems ; Vol. 4251 ; 10th International Conference, KES 2006, Bournemouth, UK, October 9-11 2006, Proceedings, Part I

Delegates and friends, we are very pleased to extend to you the sincerest of welcomes to this, the 10th International Conference on Knowledge Based and Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems at the Bournemouth International Centre in Bournemouth, UK, brought to you by KES International. This is a special KES conference, as it is the 10th in the series, and as such, it represents an occasion for celebration and an opportunity for reflection. The first KES conference was held in 1997 and was organised by the KES conference founder, Lakhmi Jain. In 1997, 1998 and 1999 the KES conferences were held in Adelaide, Australia. In 2000 the conference moved out of Australia to be held in Brighton, UK; in 2001 it was in Osaka, Japan; in 2002, Crema near Milan, Italy; in 2003, Oxford, UK; in 2004, Wellington, New Zealand; and in 2005, Melbourne, Australia. The next two conferences are planned to be in Italy and Croatia. Delegate numbers have grown from about 100 in 1997, to a regular figure in excess of 500. The conference attracts delegates from many different countries, in Europe, Australasia, the Pacific Rim, Asia and the Americas, and may truly be said to be ‘International’.

Knowledge Sharing in the Integrated Enterprise : Interoperability Strategies for the Enterprise Architect

The IFIP series publishes state-of-the-art results in the sciences and technologies of information and communication. The scope of the series includes: foundations of computer science; software theory and practice; education; computer applications in technology; communication systems; systems modeling and optimization; information systems; computers and society; computer systems technology; security and protection in information processing systems; artificial intelligence; and human-computer interaction. Proceedings and post-proceedings of referred international conferences in computer science and interdisciplinary fields are featured. These results often precede journal publication and represent the most current research. The principal aim of the IFIP series is to encourage education and the dissemination and exchange of information about all aspects of computing.

Knowledge Representation Techniques : A Rough Set Approach

The basis for the material in this book centers around a long term research project with autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle systems. One of the main research topics in the project is knowledge representation and reasoning. The focus of the research has been on the development of tractable combinations of approximate and nonmonotonic reasoning systems. The techniques developed are based on intuitions from rough set theory. Efforts have been made to take theory into practice by instantiating research results in the context of traditional relational database or deductive database systems.

Knowledge Representation and the Semantics of Natural Language

This book presents a method for the semantic representation of natural l- guage expressions (texts, sentences, phrases, etc. ) which can be used as a u- versal knowledge representation paradigm in the human sciences, like lingu- tics, cognitive psychology, or philosophy of language, as well as in com- tational linguistics and in arti?cial intelligence. It is also an attempt to close the gap between these disciplines, which to a large extent are still working separately.

The incursion of information and communication technologies (ICT) in health care entails evident bene?ts at the levels of security and efciency that improve not only the quality of life of the patients, but also the quality of the work of the health care professionals and the costs of national health care systems. Leaving research approaches aside, the analysis of ICT in health care shows an evo- tion from the initial interest in representing and storing health care data (i. e. , electronic health care records) to the current interest of having remote access to electronic health care systems, as for example HL7 initiatives or telemedicine. This sometimes imperceptible evolution can be interpreted as a new step of the progress path of health care informatics.

The papers are organized in topical sections on knowledge patterns and knowledge representation, matching ontologies and data integration, natural language, knowledge acquisition and annotations, search, query and interaction, as well as ontologies.

Knowledge Discovery in Databases : PKDD 2005 ; 9th European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases, Porto, Portugal, October 3-7, 2005, Proceedings

585 different paper submissions were received for both events, which maintains the high s- mission standard of last year. Of these, 335 were submitted to ECML only, 220 to PKDD only and 30 to both. Such a high volume of scientific work required a tremendous effort from Area Chairs, Program Committee members and some additional reviewers. On average, PC members had 10 papers to evaluate, and Area Chairs had 25 papers to decide upon. We managed to have 3 highly qua- ?ed independent reviews per paper (with very few exceptions)and one additional overall input from one of the Area Chairs. After the authors’ responses and the online discussions for many of the papers, we arrived at the final selection of 40 regular papers for ECML and 35 for PKDD. Besides these, 32 others were accepted as short papers for ECML and 35 for PKDD. This represents a joint acceptance rate of around 13% for regular papers and 25% overall. We thank all involved for all the e?ort with reviewing and selection of papers. Besides the core technical program, ECML and PKDD had 6 invited speakers, 10 workshops, 8 tutorials and a Knowledge Discovery Challenge.

Knowledge Discovery from XML Documents ; 1st International Workshop, KDXD 2006, Singapore, April 9, 2006, Proceedings

The KDXD 2006 (Knowledge Discovery from XML Documents) workshop is the ?rst international workshop running this year in conjunction with the 10th Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, PAKDD 2006. The workshop provided an important forum for the dissemination and exchange of new ideas and research related to XML data discovery and retrieval. The eXtensible Markup Language (XML) has become a standard language for data representation and exchange. With the continuous growth in XML data sources,the ability to manage collections of XML documents and discover knowledge from them for decision support becomes increasingly important. Due to the inherent ?exibility ofXML, in both structure and semantics, inferring important knowledge from XML data is faced with new challenges as well as bene?ts. The objective of the workshop was to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss all aspects of the emerging XML data management challenges.

Knowledge and Institutions

Bridges the disciplinary boundaries within the social sciences to explore the role of social institutions in shaping geographical contexts, and in creating new knowledge. It includes theorizations as well as original empirical case studies on the emergence, maintenance and change of institutions as well as on their constraining and enabling effects on innovation, entrepreneurship, art and cultural heritage, often at regional scales across Europe and North America. Rooted in the disciplines of management and organization studies, sociology, geography, political science, and economics the contributors all take comprehensive approaches to carve out the specific contextuality of institutions as well as their impact on societal outcomes. Not only does this book offer detailed insights into current debates in institutional theory, it also provides background for scholars, students, and professionals at the intersection between regional development, policy-making, and regulation.

Knowledge and Information Visualization : Searching for Synergies

The basic ideas underlying knowledge visualization and information vi- alization are outlined. In a short preview of the contributions of this volume, the idea behind each approach and its contribution to the goals of the book are outlined. 2 The Basic Concepts of the Book Three basic concepts are the focus of this book: "data", "information", and "kno- edge". There have been numerous attempts to define the terms "data", "information", and "knowledge", among them, the OTEC Homepage "Data, Information, Kno- edge, and Wisdom" (Bellinger, Castro, & Mills, see http://www.syste- thinking.org/dikw/dikw.htm): Data are raw. They are symbols or isolated and non-interpreted facts. Data rep- sent a fact or statement of event without any relation to other data. Data simply exists and has no significance beyond its existence (in and of itself). It can exist in any form, usable or not. It does not have meaning of itself.

Knot Theory and Its Applications

The book contains most of the fundamental classical facts about the theory, such as knot diagrams, braid representations, Seifert surfaces, tangles, and Alexander polynomials; also included are key newer developments and special topics such as chord diagrams and covering spaces.
