Pedagogies of the Imagination : Mythopoetic Curriculum in Educational Practice

This book is about the practice of Imaginal Knowing in education. Imaginal knowing is not fantasy, but is linked to the way humans imagine the real world. Imaginal knowing moves the heart, holds the imagination, finds the fit between self-stories, public myths, and the content of cultural knowledge. It is deeply personal, yet open to the universe. The curriculum, as conceptualized here, is the medium through which imaginal knowing is evoked in both teachers and students.

Pattern Recognition ; Vol. 3663 ; 27th DAGM Symposium, Vienna, Austria, August 31 - September 2, 2005, Proceedings

It is both an honor and a pleasure to hold the 27th Annual Meeting of the German Association for Pattern Recognition, DAGM 2005, at the Vienna U- versity of Technology, Austria, organized by the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing (PRIP) Group. We received 122 contributions of which we were able to accept 29 as oral presentations and 31 as posters. Each paper received three reviews, upon which decisions were made based on correctness, presentation, technical depth, scienti?c signi?cance and originality. The selection as oral or poster presentation does not signify a quality grading but re?ects attractiveness to the audience which is also re?ected in the order of appearance of papers in these proceedings. The papers are printed in the same order as presented at the symposium and posters are integrated in the corresponding thematic session. In putting these proceedings together, many people played signi?cant roles which we would like to acknowledge. First of all our thanks go to the authors who contributed their work to the symposium. Second, we are grateful for the dedicated work of the 38 members of the Program Committee for their e?ort in evaluating the submitted papers and inprovidingthe necessarydecisionsupport information and the valuable feedback for the authors. Furthermore, the P- gram Committee awarded prizes for the best papers, and we want to sincerely thank the donors. We were honored to have the following three invited speakers at the conf- ence: – Jan P.

Pathologie hypophysaire et grossesse = Pituitary pathology and pregnancy

Pituitary diseases, tumor or non-tumor, are classically responsible for infertility. Thanks to the progress of medical and surgical treatments developed for the treatment of these pituitary diseases, pregnancies are more and more frequent in patients having in particular a secreting pituitary adenoma or an ante-pituitary insufficiency or a central diabetes insipidus. However, the consequences of pituitary disease and treatments for the mother or fetus are still discussed by endocrinologists, gynecologists, obstetricians and pediatricians. The aim of this unique work in French is an update of our knowledge on the subject, and more particularly on the hormonal and radiological diagnosis of a hypersecretion syndrome or a pituitary insufficiency during pregnancy, as well. as for the management of patients with tumor or non-tumor pituitary pathology, wishing or having pregnancy.

Partner Choice and Cooperation in Networks : Theory and Experimental Evidence

Cooperation is beneficial but may be hard to achieve in situations where the selfish interests of individuals conflict with their common goal, such as in sharing of goods, help, knowledge or information, in trade and pollution negotiations, and in exploitation of common resources. The standard models of such "social dilemmas" assume that the individuals are obliged to participate in the dilemma. These models fail to capture an important element of human interaction: that people are in general free to select their interaction partners. In this book a social dilemma with partner selection is introduced and studied with the methods of formal game theory, experimental economics and computer simulations. It allows exploration of simultaneous dynamics of the network structure and cooperative behavior on this structure. The results of this study show that partner choice strongly facilitates cooperation and leads to networks where free-riders are likely to be excluded.

Participation in Fisheries Governance

The chapters focus on three main themes: first, what value does stakeholder participation bring to fisheries governance? Its advocates claim that participation improves the quality of decision-making; resolves conflicts; and increases compliance with regulations. On the other hand, critics argue that participation is often unnecessary, ineffective, costly, time-consuming, and cosmetic. The second theme is the relationship between the participatory mode and the current switch from single species-based fisheries management to the ecosystem-based approach (EBA). In what way does widening the extent of public participation contribute to the EBA? Third is the vexed question of the relationship between fishers’ experiential knowledge and fisheries science: how far does fishers’ knowledge improve our understanding of the marine environment?

Partial Differential Equations in Action : From Modelling to Theory

This book is designed as an advanced undergraduate or a first-year graduate course for students from various disciplines like applied mathematics, physics, engineering. The main purpose is on the one hand to train the students to appreciate the interplay between theory and modelling in problems arising in the applied sciences; on the other hand to give them a solid theoretical background for numerical methods, such as finite elements. Accordingly, this textbook is divided into two parts. The first one has a rather elementary character with the goal of developing and studying basic problems from the macro-areas of diffusion, propagation and transport, waves and vibrations. Ideas and connections with concrete aspects are emphasized whenever possible, in order to provide intuition and feeling for the subject. For this part, a knowledge of advanced calculus and ordinary differential equations is required.

Partial Covers, Reducts and Decision Rules in Rough Sets : Theory and Applications

Devoted to theoretical and experimental study of partial reducts and partial decision rules on the basis of the study of partial covers. The use of partial (approximate) reducts and decision rules instead of exact ones allows us to obtain more compact description of knowledge contained in decision tables, and to design more precise classifiers. Algorithms for construction of partial reducts and partial decision rules, bounds on minimal complexity of partial reducts and decision rules, and algorithms for construction of the set of all partial reducts and the set of all irreducible partial decision rules are considered. The book includes a discussion on the results of numerous experiments with randomly generated and real-life decision tables. These results show that partial reducts and decision rules can be used in data mining and knowledge discovery both for knowledge representation and for prediction.
