Advances in Meshfree Techniques
In recent years meshless/meshfree methods have gained a considerable attention in engineering and applied mathematics. The variety of problems that are now being addressed by these techniques continues to expand and the quality of the results obtained demonstrates the effectiveness of many of the methods currently available. The book presents a significant sample of the state of the art in the field with methods that have reached a certain level of maturity while also addressing many open issues.The book collects extended original contributions presented at the first ECCOMAS Conference on Meshless Methods held in 2005 in Lisbon. The list of contributors reveals a mix of highly distinguished authors as well as quite young but very active and promising researchers, thus giving the reader an interesting and updated view of different mesh reduction methods and its range of applications. The material presented is appropriate for researchers, engineers, physicists, applied mathematicians and graduate students interested in this active research area.

Advances in Material Forming ; Esaform 10 years on
This book groups the main advances in material forming, considering different p- cesses (conventional and non-conventional) focusing in polymers, composites and metals, that are analyzed from the state of the art, describing the most significant recent advances and identifying the present challenges from the experimental, modeling and numerical points of view. Chapters include a large list of references and have been wr- ten by recognized specialists. Special emphasis is devoted to the contributions of the European Scientific Association on Material Forming (ESAFORM) during the last 10 years (1998-2007) and in particular the ones coming from its annual international conference. The first chapter includes an excellent introduction to the Esaform association.

The automatic analysis of images and signals in medicine, biotechnology, and chemistry is a challenging and demanding field. Signal-producing procedures by microscopes, spectrometers, and other sensors have found their way into wide fields of medicine, biotechnology, economy, and environmental analysis. With this arises the problem of the automatic mass analysis of signal information. Signal-interpreting systems which generate automatically the desired target statements from the signals are therefore of compelling necessity. The continuation of mass analyses on the basis of classical procedures leads to investments of proportions that are not feasible. New procedures and system architectures are therefore required. Machine learning and cybernetics play an important role in many modern electronic, computer and communications systems. Automated processing of information by these systems requires intelligent analysis of various types of data and optimal decision making. In recent years, we have witnessed a rapid expansion of research and development activities in machine learning and cybernetics. To provide opportunities for researchers in these areas to share their ideas and foster collaborations, the International Conference on Machines and Cybernetics (ICMLC) has been held annually since 2002. The conference series has achieved a great success in attracting a large number of paper submissions and participants and enabling fruitful exchanges among academic and industrial researchers and postgraduate students. In 2005, the conference (ICMLC 2005) received 2461 full paper submissions and the Program Committee selected 1050 of them for presentation. It is especially encouraging that the conference is attracting more and more international attention.

It was with pleasure that we hosted PAKDD 2006 in Singapore again, since the inaugural PAKDD conference was held in Singapore in 1997. PAKDD 2006 continues its tradition of providing an international forum for researchers and industry practitioners to share their new ideas, original research results and practical development experiences from all aspects of KDD data mining, including data cleaning, data warehousing, data mining techniques, knowledge visualization, and data mining applications.

Knowledge discovery and data mining have become areas of growing significance because of the recent increasing demand for KDD techniques, including those used in machine learning, databases, statistics, knowledge acquisition, data visualization, and high performance computing. In view of this, and following the success of the five previous PAKDD conferences, the sixth Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD 2002) aimed to provide a forum for the sharing of original research results, innovative ideas, state-of-the-art developments, and implementation experiences in knowledge discovery and data mining among researchers in academic and industrial organizations. Much work went into preparing a program of high quality. We received 128 submissions.

The Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshops (PKAW) have a long tradition in providing a forum for researchers to exchange the latest ideas on the topic. Parti- pants come from all over the world but with a focus on the Pacific Rim region. PKAW is one of three international knowledge acquisition workshop series held in the Pacific-Rim, Canada and Europe over the last two decades. The previous Pacific Knowledge Acquisition Workshop, PKAW 2004, had a strong emphasis on inc- mental knowledge acquisition, machine learning, neural networks and data mining.

One of the superb characteristics of Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) is that it is an interdisciplinary ?eld in which researchers and practitioners from a number of areas are involved in a typical project. This also creates a challenge in which the success of a team depends on the participation of users and domain experts who need to interact with researchers and developers of any IDA system. All this is usually re?ected in successful projects and of course on the papers that were evaluated by this year’s program committee from which the ?nal program has been developed. In our call for papers, we solicited papers on (i) applications and tools, (ii) theory and general principles, and (iii) algorithms and techniques. We received a total of 184 papers, In the end 46 papers were accepted, which are all included in the proceedings and presented at the conference. This year’s papers re?ect the results of applied and theoretical researchfrom a number of disciplines all of which are related to the ?eld of Intelligent Data Analysis. To have the best combination of theoretical and applied research and also provide the best focus.
Advances in Integrated Soil Fertility Research in sub-Saharan Africa : Challenges and Opportunities
Food insecurity is a central concern and a fundamental challenge for human welfare and economic growth in Africa. Low agricultural production, results in low incomes, poor nutrition, vulnerability to risks and lack of empowerment. Land degradation and soil fertility depletion are considered the major threats to food security and natural resource conservation in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Investments in technology, policy and institutional reforms are needed to increase agricultural productivity to ensure food security and sustained national economies. Past research has generated numerous soil fertility management technologies which if adopted could propel the African continent out of the poverty trap. However, these technologies have had little, if any, impact due to low adoption by the smallholder farmers.
