Information infrastructures within European health care : Working with the installed base
This book consolidates experiences from across Europe on the design, development, implementation and evolution of inter-organisational information infrastructures for healthcare. It provides insights with practical relevance for those involved or interested in the planning and implementation of such infrastructures and includes 11 empirical cases on the introduction of core infrastructural arrangements in different national settings: six cases investigate the use of e-prescriptions and five the public platforms for patient-oriented eHealth services. Both are linked to different types of aims.

Information Geometry : Near Randomness and Near Independence
This volume will be useful to practising scientists and students working in the application of statistical models to real materials or to processes with perturbations of a Poisson process, a uniform process, or a state of independence for a bivariate process. We use information geometry to provide a common differential geometric framework for a wide range of illustrative applications including amino acid sequence spacings in protein chains, cryptology studies, clustering of communications and galaxies, cosmological voids, coupled spatial statistics in stochastic fibre networks and stochastic porous media, quantum chaology. This volume contains the papers presented at the International Workshop “Inf- mation Fusion and Geographical Information Systems” (IF&GIS’07) held in St. Petersburg, Russia, 2007. Research in the Geosciences field interprets the concept of Information Fusion as a synonym of an approach that permits research into all the problems and issues which program-makers and scientific researchers are faced with. Thus, topics that are to be covered during the workshop relate to issues such as harmonization, - tegration and information fusion. At the same time the spectrum of problems - der discussion exceeds the current bounds of developing GIS applications. This is a significant modern trend since GIS technology is more often used as an interface in support and decision making systems. As a result, it is difficult to consider Geoinformation Science without considering related scientific directions such as Ontology, Artificial Intelligent Systems and Situation Management.
Information extraction : Algorithms and prospects in a retrieval context
The book focuses on content recognition in text. It elaborates on the past and current most successful algorithms and their application in a variety of domains (e.g., news filtering, mining of biomedical text, intelligence gathering, competitive intelligence, legal information searching, and processing of informal text). An important part discusses current statistical and machine learning algorithms for information detection and classification and integrates their results in probabilistic retrieval models. The book also reveals a number of ideas towards an advanced understanding and synthesis of textual content.
Information criteria and statistical modeling
One of the main objectives of this book is to provide comprehensive explanations of the concepts and derivations of the AIC and related criteria, including Schwarz’s Bayesian information criterion (BIC), together with a wide range of practical examples of model selection and evaluation criteria. A secondary objective is to provide a theoretical basis for the analysis and extension of information criteria via a statistical functional approach. A generalized information criterion (GIC) and a bootstrap information criterion are presented, which provide unified tools for modeling and model evaluation for a diverse range of models, including various types of nonlinear models and model estimation procedures such as robust estimation, the maximum penalized likelihood method and a Bayesian approach.

In CoLIS 5 we took an interdisciplinary approach to the issue of context to help us understand and the theoretical approaches to modelling and understanding context, incorporate contextual reasoning within technology, and develop a shared framework for promoting the exploration of context.

Information and self-organization : A macroscopic approach to complex systems
This book presents the concepts needed to deal with self-organizing complex systems from a unifying point of view that uses macroscopic data. The various meanings of the concept "information" are discussed and a general formulation of the maximum information (entropy) principle is used. With the aid of results from synergetics, adequate objective constraints for a large class of self-organizing systems are formulated and examples are given from physics, life and computer science. The relationship to chaos theory is examined and it is further shown that, based on possibly scarce and noisy data, unbiased guesses about processes of complex systems can be made and the underlying deterministic and random forces determined. This allows for probabilistic predictions of processes, with applications to numerous fields in science, technology, medicine and economics. The extensions of the third edition are essentially devoted to an introduction to the meaning of information in the quantum context. Indeed, quantum information science and technology is presently one of the most active fields of research at the interface of physics, technology and information sciences and has already established itself as one of the major future technologies for processing and communicating information on any scale.
Information and Management Systems for Product Customization
This book consists of three parts. In the first part, within the theoretical basics of mass customization are discussed, and within the theoretical context, the main problems that are encountered with the implementation of mass customization are outlined. Part two deals with the development of appropriate information systems for mass customization. Part three discusses the topic of product modularity. More specifically, this part develops a managerial approach or tool to assess and solve complexity issues induced by the variety of needs expressed by customers. Using the tools and the conceptual frameworks developed in INFORMATION AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS FOR PRODUCT CUSTOMIZATION, the main problems of mass customization can be resolved. The book is the result of a privately funded, multi-year research project on "Modeling Planning, and Assessment of Business Transformation Processes in the area of Mass Customization."
