This new volume in the series Springer Handbooks of Computational Statistics gives an overview of modern data visualization methods, both in theory and practice. There are definitive chapters on modern graphical tools such as mosaic plots, parallel coordinate plots and linked views. Handbook of contact mechanics : Exact solutions of axisymmetric contact problems

This book contains a structured collection of complete solutions of all significant axially symmetric contact problems. It provides solutions for classical profiles such as the sphere, cone or flat cylindrical punch as well as a multitude of other technically relevant shapes, e.g. the truncated cone, the worn sphere, rough profiles, hollow cylinders, etc. Normal, tangential and torsional contacts with and without adhesion are examined. Elastically isotropic, transversally isotropic, viscoelastic and functionally graded media are addressed. The solutions of the contact problems cover the relationships between the macroscopic quantities of force and displacement, the contact configuration as well as the stress and displacement fields at the surface and in some cases within the half-space medium. The solutions are obtained by the simplest available method – usually involving the method of dimensionality reduction or approaches of reduction to the non-adhesive normal contact problem.

Hamiltonian Reduction by Stages

Hamiltonian Methods in the Theory of Solitons

This book argues that the key problems of software systems development (SSD) are socio-technical rather than purely technical in nature. Software systems are unique. They are the only human artefacts that are both intangible and determinant. This presents unprecedented problems for the development process both in determining what is required and how it is developed. Primarily this is a problem of communications between stakeholders and developers, and of communications within the development team. Current solutions are not only inadequate in expressing the technical problem, they also evade the communications problems almost entirely.

Teachers are in difficulty with regard to the space and emphasis to be given to set theory topics, in their preparation and in their work, because they have not been provided with adequate knowledge at the university. It is safe to say, on the basis of much experience, that the average mathematician, even the researcher, does not know what set theory is. Two prejudices stand in the way of a good knowledge of the theory: one, of a minimalist type, is its identification with an unspecified "set theory", an austere language that is too demanding if one wants to impose it prematurely; the other is of a maximalist type and consists in the supposed and effective link with the more subtle questions of the foundations of mathematics. But the theory has an important mathematical content, and with many implications of didactic interest.

Born from the university courses of Group Theory held by the author for several years, this book deals with the fundamental arguments of the theory: abelian, nilpotent and solvable groups, free groups, permutations, representations and cohomology. After the first notions, Hölder's program for the classification of finite groups is exposed. A long chapter is dedicated to the action of a group on a set and to the permutations, both under the algebraic and combinatorial aspects, with references to the theory of equations. Some questions of a logical nature are also considered, such as the decidability of the word problem for certain classes of groups. An essential aspect of the book is the presence of a great variety of exercises, about 400, mostly solved.

Growth, Trade and Economic Institutions

Endogenous growth is examined from the viewpoint of economic history, institutions and international trade. The main results are the following. The variance in institutional quality can be explained by historical differences in biogeographical potential for early agriculture. The expansion of output can lead to dis-agglomeration. The patterns of growth are sensitive to the technology parameters of the capital-good industry. With capital intensive industries, the balanced growth path can exhibit local indeterminacy. Economies integrate, if the productivity of R&D does not vary too much for them. Other aspects examined are the equilibrium of a dynamic multi-sector economy, the political economy of employment protection and the relationship between technological change and the demand for skill-intensive activities.

Group-based Cryptography

This book is about relations between three different areas of mathematics and theoretical computer science: combinatorial group theory, cryptography, and complexity theory. It is explored how non-commutative (infinite) groups, which are typically studied in combinatorial group theory, can be used in public key cryptography. It is also shown that there is a remarkable feedback from cryptography to combinatorial group theory because some of the problems motivated by cryptography appear to be new to group theory, and they open many interesting research avenues within group theory.

Group theory : Application to the physics of condensed matter

The beauty and strength of group theory resides in the transformation of many complex symmetry operations into a very simple linear algebra. This concise and class-tested book has been pedagogically tailored over 30 years MIT and 2 years at the University Federal of Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil. Group B Coxsackieviruses

This monograph reviews information published since 1997 on the group B coxsackieviruses (CVB), a large and important group of human enteroviruses. The CVB were discovered in the mid-20th century, during the search for other poliovirus types, and within a very few years of this discovery, the CVB had been implicated as causes of human myocarditis and pancreatitis. The study of the CVB is still inextricably linked with the fate of their well-known relatives, the polioviruses, for as poliovirus eradication proceeds around the world, the CVB emerge more prominently as the enteroviruses best suited for continuing studies in enteroviral molecular biology as well as understanding the mechanisms underlying enteroviral pathogenesis. This volume reviews and presents modern views on the spectrum of CVB biologies, from interaction of the virus with its receptor through replication, speciation, and induction of disease.
