Accountability for International Humanitarian Law Violations : The Case of Rwanda and East Timor

The main objective of this book is to make available to an informed audience a le gal and policy oriented study on accountability for serious human rights and inter national humanitarian law violations. It is an attempt to share the lessons learnt in accountability for atrocity crimes as conducted by the International Criminal Tri bunal for Rwanda (ICTR), and the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). The former established subsequent to egregious atrocities that took place in 1994, and the latter following the massive outburst of violence in 1999. The book is based on two cases: Rwanda and East Timor. It is expected that it will serve as reference literature to both the legal community and policy makers on accountability for heinous international crimes.

A Space of Their Own : The Archaeology of Nineteenth Century Lunatic Asylums in Britain, South Australia and Tasmania

The history of lunatic asylums – what do we really know about them? Films and television programs have portrayed them as places of horror where the patients are restrained and left to listen to the cries of their fellow inmates in despair. But what was the world of nineteenth century lunatic asylums really like? Are these images true? This book will explore this world using the techniques of historical archaeology and history.

A Risk-Benefit Perspective on Early Customer Integration

Customer integration in the early innovation phase has been considered the method of choice in theory and practice. Growing experience with the concept has shown unexpected side effects that may even outweigh its recognized advantages. Therefore, management needs to be able to assess in advance whether the involvement of customers will add overall value to each particular innovation project. To support but not to replace the final managerial decision, a mathematical formula is developed. It can be applied to all kinds of process structures, takes into account the risks and benefits contingent on a company's situation as well as risk-reducing and benefit-increasing measures and translates them into numerical values. The resulting figure indicates the prospective value of customer integration in a specific project.

A Primal Perspective on the Philosophy of Religion

This book challenges this widespread assumption and demonstrates how primal religions have something significant to offer on virtually every theme discussed in the philosophy of religion. Through this book the primal religous tradition stakes its claim for a place at the table.Despite the absence of written texts, primal religions have an implicit philosophy. This study shows how materials of primal religious experience can be incorporated in the categories of modern philosophy of religion. The book contends that the primal perspective can widen and deepen the horizons of philosophy of religion and enhance the philosophical appreciation of religion as a universal phenomenon.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Capability in Age and Ageing

This book provides insight on how to interpret capability in ageing – one’s individual ability to perform actions in order to reach goals one has reason to value – from a multidisciplinary approach. the book describes this demographic trends as well as the large global challenges and important societal implications this will have such as a worldwide increase in the number of persons affected with dementia, and in the ratio of retired persons to those still in the labor market. Through contributions from many different research areas, it discussed how capability depends on interactions between the individual (e.g. health, genetics, personality, intellectual capacity), environment (e.g. family, friends, home, work place), and society (e.g. political decisions, ageism, historical period).

A Modern Perspective on Type Theory : From its Origins until Today

The first part of the book is historical, yet at the same time, places historical systems (like Russell's RTT) in the modern setting. The second part deals with modern type theory as it developed since the 1940s, and with the role of propositions as types (or proofs as terms), but at the same time, places another historical system (the proof checker Automath) in the modern setting. The third part uses this bridging in the first two parts between historical and modern systems to propose new systems that bring more advantages together. This book has much to offer to mathematicians, logicians and to computer scientists in general. It will have considerable influence for many years to come.' - Henk Barendregt

A History of Interior Design ; 5th Ed

Interior design describes the process by which an interior space is made into an effective setting for whatever range of human activities are to take place there. Much like the history of art, the history of interior design encompasses numerous styles, movements, and the influence of international, political, and social developments. A basic understanding of this history is important to students taking survey courses, professional designers looking to the past for inspiration, and for those interested in antiques, furniture design, and the general evolution of the spaces where we work and live

A Geometric Approach to Differential Forms

The modern subject of differential forms subsumes classical vector calculus. This text presents differential forms from a geometric perspective accessible at the undergraduate level. The book begins with basic concepts such as partial differentiation and multiple integration and gently develops the entire machinery of differential forms. Each new concept is presented with a natural picture that students can easily grasp. Algebraic properties then follow. This facilitates the development of differential forms without assuming a background in linear algebra. Throughout the text, emphasis is placed on applications in 3 dimensions, but all definitions are given so as to be easily generalized to higher dimensions. A centerpiece of the text is the generalized Stokes' theorem. Although this theorem implies all of the classical integral theorems of vector calculus, it is far easier for students to both comprehend and remember.

A Course in Credibility Theory and its Applications

It covers the subject of Credibility Theory extensively and includes most aspects of this topic from the simplest case to the most general dynamic model. The first four chapters contain plenty of material The book therefore treats explicitly the tasks which the actuary encounters in his daily work such as estimation of loss ratios, claim frequencies and claim sizes. The models are worked out in detail (including the estimation of structural parameters) so that they can immediately be applied in practice. Most exercises are based on real insurance data and real situations from practice and many of them have the characteristics of a case study. The extension to practical problems arising from the general area of finance is often quite straightforward. This book deserves a place on the bookshelf of every actuary and mathematician who works, teaches or does research in the area of insurance and finance.for a first course on Credibility.

A beginner's guide to urban design and development : the ABC of quality, sustainable design

Provides invaluable guidance to all those with an interest in placemaking and the built environment, from those with no experience to those who have worked for many years in industry, illustrating key principles that will secure higher quality, more sustainable design in accessible, jargon-free language. Explains the design process in a straightforward way, exploring the different roles and highlighting the opportunities and limitations different agencies have to influence design over the various stages of the process. Examples from the UK and worldwide look at how the system operates and how best practice can make a real difference on the ground. Case studies examine situations where quality or sustainability fell short – and how this could have been avoided. This book also showcases a variety of evaluation tools, explaining how they operate, and giving guidance on how to create project-specific tools to drive schemes forward. With community empowerment at its core, the book explains technical language and shares bountiful knowledge to broaden place democracy and make influencing design accessible to many, not just a few.

3D design reconstruction

This report will talk about a way to design and rebuild a cheap, true-to-the-truth 3D system using reverse engineering. The system provides the service of reconstructing objects into 3D models by placing the object in a predetermined place facing a set of sensors and cameras at a certain distance and at precise angles, using the angle of rotation for each image and combining the points of triangulation we can build a form of 3D modeling types. These models can be used in digital animation or printed with 3D printers for a wide variety of applications.
