Design Technology in Contemporary Architectural Practice

Offers rare insights about how these firms apply technology to purposefully disrupt and support their creative design processes in order to then explore how technology can be integrated on an organisational level. The resulting practice stories are loosely tied to four chapters that discuss how Design Technology corresponds to studio culture, collaboration and delivery protocols, business opportunities, knowledge sharing, staff empowerment, and more. Focused on cultural and organisational challenges and opportunities. This book benefits both the professional market (such as design firms reflecting on their technology use), as well as the academic context (with its critical reflection on the interface between design process and technology support). Stories from the following design firms are included: Coop Himmelb(l)au ; Foster + Partners ; Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) ; Zaha Hadid Architects ; Diller Scofidio + Renfo ; Heatherwick Studio ; Morphosis Architects ; SO-IL ; Woods Bagot ; Herzog & de Meuron ; LASSA

Design of Wireless Autonomous Datalogger ICs

The book starts with a comprehensive introduction on the most important design aspects and trade-offs for miniaturized low-power telemetric dataloggers. After the general introduction follows an in-depth case study of an autonomous CMOS datalogger IC for the registration of in vivo loads on oral implants. After tackling the design of the datalogger on the system level, the design of the different building blocks is elaborated in detail, with emphasis on low power

Design build with the scarcity and creativity studio

Scarcity and Creativity Studio has developed a teaching method which reaffirms a commitment to architecture as a service to society, questions the idea of the individual creator in favour of collaborative design, and challenges the traditional master-student relationship. This book documents the projects and, in so doing, explains the practices and pedagogic methods which the studio has developed in relation to architecture education in general and design build education in particular. Aimed at students, teachers, and professionals who are exploring the possibilities of design build, the 16 built projects are fully documented in text, drawings, and photos and can be used as both inspiration and references. Projects are based in Norway, Finland, Chile, Ecuador (Galápagos), Kenya, South Africa, China, Argentina, and Lebanon.

Dermatopathology

The book describes the principles of histopathologic patterns in selected acquired skin diseases, together with short clinical descriptions and case reports. The underlying, or possible underlying, mechanisms are elucidated, and controversial concepts are discussed. To facilitate the understanding of underlying mechanisms, the first chapters of the book comprise summaries of basic histology of lymphatics and blood vessels, relevant parts of general pathology, immunology, and molecular cell biology.

Dependence in Probability and Statistics

This book gives a detailed account of some recent developments in the field of probability and statistics for dependent data. The book covers a wide range of topics from Markov chain theory and weak dependence with an emphasis on some recent developments on dynamical systems, to strong dependence in times series and random fields. A special section is devoted to statistical estimation problems and specific applications. The book is written as a succession of papers by some specialists of the field, alternating general surveys, mostly at a level accessible to graduate students in probability and statistics, and more general research papers mainly suitable to researchers in the field. The first part of the book considers some recent developments on weak dependent time series, including some new results for Markov chains as well as some developments on new notions of weak dependence. This part also intends to fill a gap between the probability and statistical literature and the dynamical system literature. The second part presents some new results on strong dependence with a special emphasis on non-linear processes and random fields currently encountered in applications. Finally, in the last part, some general estimation problems are investigated, ranging from rate of convergence of maximum likelihood estimators to efficient estimation in parametric or non-parametric time series models, with an emphasis on applications with non-stationary data.

Dental Composite Materials for Direct Restorations

Covers both basic scientific and clinically relevant aspects of dental composite materials with a view to meeting the needs of researchers and practitioners. Following an introduction on their development, the composition of contemporary composites is analyzed. A chapter on polymerization explains the setting reactions and light sources available for light-cured composites. The quality of monomer-to-polymer conversion is a key factor for material properties. Polymerization shrinkage along with the associated stress remains among the most challenging issues regarding composite restorations. A new classification of dental composites is proposed to offer more clinically relevant ways of differentiating between commercially available materials.

Dental anatomy and morphology

Conveys the practical knowledge of dental anatomy and the art of sculpting it in wax. The ideal anatomy of each dental structure is described in detail and the waxing techniques are beautifully illustrated step by step for visual reference. The author demonstrates that for every morphologic feature there is an explanation in nature, assigning significance to every minute feature of dental morphology. Organized by tooth and arch, this book views morphology through a clinical lens and repeatedly draws connections between anatomical features and clinical concepts. The fundamental knowledge presented in this text is essential for improving waxing and sculpting techniques and will be useful for students and specialists alike.

Dendrimer Catalysis

catalytically active dendrimers have emerged as a class of molecular catalysts that has substantially enriched the field of homogeneous (and in part heterogeneous) catalysis. A general survey of transition metal dendrimer catalysts and the way they have developed is followed by in-depth discussions of dendritic transition metal catalysis based on non-covalent catalyst-support interaction and an overview of the rapidly growing field of stereoselective dendrimer catalysis. The development of dendrimer-encapsulated bimetallic nanoparticles has provided the interface with heterogeneous colloid catalysis. As cheaper and readily accessible alternatives to regular dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers are increasingly being used as catalyst platforms. These topics are complemented by a review of metallodendritic exoreptors for the redox recognition of oxo-anions and halides.

Demystifying Climate Models : A Users Guide to Earth System Models

This book demystifies the models we use to simulate present and future climates, allowing readers to better understand how to use climate model results. In order to predict the future trajectory of the Earth’s climate, climate-system simulation models are necessary. When and how do we trust climate model predictions? The book offers a framework for answering this question. It provides readers with a basic primer on climate and climate change, and offers non-technical explanations for how climate models are constructed, why they are uncertain, and what level of confidence we should place in them. It presents current results and the key uncertainties concerning them. Uncertainty is not a weakness but understanding uncertainty is a strength and a key part of using any model, including climate models.

Delusions in Context

This open access book offers an exploration of delusions--unusual beliefs that can significantly disrupt people's lives. Experts from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, including lived experience, clinical psychiatry, philosophy, clinical psychology, and cognitive neuroscience, discuss how delusions emerge, why it is so difficult to give them up, what their effects are, how they are managed, and what we can do to reduce the stigma associated with them. Taken as a whole, the book proposes that there is continuity between delusions and everyday beliefs. It is essential reading for researchers working on delusions and mental health more generally, and will also appeal to anybody who wants to gain a better understanding of what happens when the way we experience and interpret the world is different from that of the people around us.
