From computer literacy to informatics fundamentals ; International conference on informatics in secondary schools : Evolution and perspectives, ISSEP 2005, Klagenfurt, Austria, March 30-April 1, 2005, Proceedings
Duetothepenetrationofinformationtechnologyintosocietyatlargeandinto schools in particular, the relationship between informatics and education leading togeneralcomputerliteracyortotheuseofIT-basedapproachesinconventional subjects, e-learning in school, is an evident focus of many contributions. According to the broad scope of the conference its proceedings are split into two volumes. This volume, From Computer Literacy to Informatics Fundam- tals, covers papers reporting on national strategies of informatics instruction and their evolution in accordance with the penetration of information proce- ing equipment in our daily life. In one way or another, these strategies strive to accommodate the needs of basic skills in information and communication te- nology (ICT) with educational principles that can be conveyed by informatics instruction in a traditional sense. Hence, the papers on national strategies are complementedintwoways: ?rstly, bycontributionsthatstrivetoidentifyfun- mental issues, informatics can contribute to the general education process of the youth; and, secondly, by papers presenting approaches on how to link or even to combine instruction about such informatics fundamentals with the need to introduce pupils to the productive use of ICT.

Free Energy and Self-Interacting Particles
This book examines a system of parabolic-elliptic partial differential eq- tions proposed in mathematical biology, statistical mechanics, and chemical kinetics. In the context of biology, this system of equations describes the chemotactic feature of cellular slime molds and also the capillary formation of blood vessels in angiogenesis. There are several methods to derive this system. One is the biased random walk of the individual, and another is the reinforced random walk of one particle modelled on the cellular automaton. In the context of statistical mechanics or chemical kinetics, this system of equations describes the motion of a mean field of many particles, interacting under the gravitational inner force or the chemical reaction

Fragmentation of Rings and Shells : The Legacy of N.F. Mott
The present book surveys the theoretical analysis put forth by Mott with particular focus on his efforts to characterize the size and distribution of fragments resulting from a dynamic fragmentation event. Copies of the original internal reports of Mott and his co-workers are included. The book also pursues additional theoretical analysis with the intent of delving further into the physical ideas and unfinished analysis implicit in Mott`s original studies. The 8th International Symposium on fracture mechanics of ceramics was held in on the campus of the University of Houston, Houston, TX, USA, on February 25-28, 2003. With the natural maturing of the fields of structural ceramics, this symposium focused on nano-scale materials, composites, thin films and coatings as well as glass. The symposium also addressed new issues on fundamentals of fracture mechanics and contact mechanics, and a session on reliability and standardization.

Foundations and novel approaches in data mining
Data-mining has become a popular research topic in recent years for the treatment of the "data rich and information poor” syndrome. Currently, application oriented engineers are only concerned with their immediate problems, which results in an ad hoc method of problem solving. Researchers, on the other hand, lack an understanding of the practical issues of data-mining for realworld problems and often concentrate on issues that are of no significance to the practitioners. In this volume, we hope to remedy problems by (1) presenting a theoretical foundation of data-mining, and (2) providing important new directions for data-mining research. Form-oriented analysis : A new methodology to model form-based applications
Form-based applications range from simple web shops to complex enterprise resource planning systems. Draheim and Weber adapt well-established basic modeling techniques in a novel way to achieve a modeling framework optimized for this broad application domain. They introduce new modeling artifacts, such as page diagrams and form storyboards, and separate dialogue patterns to allow for reuse. In their implementation they have developed new constructs such as typed server pages, and tools for forward and reverse engineering of presentation layers. The methodology is explained using an online bookshop as a running example in which the user can experience the modeling concepts in action. The combination of theoretical achievements and hands-on practical advice and tools makes this book a reference work for both researchers in the areas of software architectures and submit-response style user interfaces, and professionals designing and developing such applications. FORTE (Formal Techniques for Networked and Distributed Systems) 2005 was sp- sored by Working Group 6.1, Technical Committee 6 (TC6) of the International Fed- ation for InformationProcessing (IFIP).The conferenceseries started in 1981underthe name PSTV (ProtocolSpeci?cation, Testing, and Veri?cation).In 1988,a second series under the name FORTE was started. Both series merged to FORTE/PSTV in 1996. The conference name was changed to FORTE in 2001. During its 24-year history, many important contributions have been reported in the conference series. The last ?ve me- ings of FORTE were held in Pisa (Italy), Cheju Island (Korea), Houston (USA), Berlin (Germany), and Madrid (Spain). The 25th FORTE was held from Sunday to Wednesday, October 2–5, 2005 on the beautiful campus of the National Taiwan University (NTU), Taipei, Taiwan, ROC.
