Uncertainty in the Electric Power Industry : Methods and Models for Decision Support

Examines the uncertainties power companies are facing and develops models to describe them – including an innovative approach combining fundamental and finance models for price modeling. The optimization of generation and trading portfolios under uncertainty is discussed with particular focus on CHP and is linked to risk management. Here the concept of integral earnings at risk is developed to provide a theoretically sound combination of value at risk and profit at risk approaches, adapted to real market structures and market liquidity. Also methods for supporting long-term investment decisions are presented: technology assessment based on experience curves and operation simulation for fuel cells and a real options approach with endogenous electricity prices.

Ultraviolet and Soft X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers : Introduction to Physical Principles, Experimental Results, Technological Challenges

In the introduction accelerator-based light sources are considered and a comparison is made between free-electron lasers and conventional quantum lasers. The motion and radiation of relativistic electrons in undulator magnets is discussed. The principle of a low-gain free-electron laser is explained and the pendulum equations are introduced that characterize the electron dynamics in the field of a light wave. The differential equations of the high-gain FEL are derived from the Maxwell equations of electrodynamics. Analytical and numerical solutions of the FEL equations are presented and important FEL parameters are defined, such as gain length, FEL bandwidth and saturation power. A detailed numerical study of the all-important microbunching process is presented. The mechanism of Self Amplified Spontaneous Emission is described theoretically and illustrated with numerous experimental results. Three-dimensional effects such as betatron oscillations and optical diffraction are addressed and their impact on the FEL performance is analyzed.

Turbulent Particle-Laden Gas Flows

Results are given of experimental and theoretical studies of "gas-solid particles" turbulent two-phase flows. Special emphasis is placed on studies of the behavior of particles suspended in a turbulent gas flow and their feedback effect on the characteristics of flow of the carrier phase.

Turbulence in Fluids : Fourth Revised and Enlarged ed.

This is the 4th edition of a book originally published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. It is an exhaustive monograph on turbulence in fluids in its theoretical and applied aspects, with many advanced developments using mathematical spectral methods (two-point closures like the EDQNM theory), direct-numerical simulations, and large-eddy simulations.Topics dealt with include: an introduction to turbulence in fluid mechanics; basic fluid dynamics; transition to turbulence; shear-flow turbulence; Fourier analysis for homogeneous turbulence; isotropic turbulence; phenomenology and simulations; analytical theories and stochastic models; two-dimensional turbulence; geostrophic turbulence; absolute-equilibrium ensembles; the statistical predictability theory; large-eddy simulations; and a section that explores developments towards real-world turbulence.

Tunnelling and Tunnel Mechanics : A Rational Approach to Tunnelling

The book covers not only practical aspects but also the underlying theoretical approaches. It also covers the fundamentals of rock mechanics. It addresses not only students but also professionals who are interested to understand the underlying principles and methods and – possibly – to further develop them. Emphasis is given to the mechanical approach rather than to hardly tractable empirical statements. The text is concise and comprises a large list of citations. Publications of the English and German speaking scientific communities have been taken into account.

Tsunami and Nonlinear Waves

The need for tsunami research and analysis has grown dramatically following the devastating tsunami of December 2004, which affected Southern Asia. This book pursues a detailed theoretical and mathematical analysis of the fundamentals of tsunamis, especially the evolution and dynamics of tsunamis and other great waves. Of course, it includes specific measurement results from the 2004 tsunami, but the emphasis centres on the nature of the waves themselves and their links to nonlinear phenomena. Throughout, methods of nonlinear dynamics and integrable systems are employed to develop novel concep.

Trends and challenges in robotic applications

Research performed on robotic applications has significantly expanded in the last decade, and currently, robotic systems are being utilized for many purposes. To achieve this generalized application of robots, researchers have endeavoured to study a wide variety of methods and algorithms in order to properly employ robotic systems in many real-life scenarios. At present, many types of robotic platforms are being employed in various applications, e.g., dual-arm robots, parallel robots, mobile robots, humanoid robots, aerial robots, underwater robots, and micro/nano robots. Moreover, some theoretical tools are specially being used to obtain correct robot performance, e.g., machine learning, artificial intelligence, multi-agent systems, and control and planning theory. The purpose of this reprint is to exhibit the current state of robotic applications. In particular, in addition to introducing novel theories and methods, this reprint is particularly focused on the application of robotic systems in real-life situations.

Treatment of Osteoarthritic Change in the Hip : Joint Preservation or Joint Replacement?

This book covers the main themes of the congress. The starting point for the treatment of hip disease depends on how we can preserve the natural hip joint and on steps leading to regeneration of the diseased, injured, or destroyed joint. Preservation and regeneration treatments following traditional and theoretical methods do not need to use expensive materials, such as the artificial joints used in arthroplasty. On the other hand, preservation and regeneration tre- ments are difficult to perform and require a lengthy rehabilitation period.

Transmedial Narration : Narratives and Stories in Different Media

including our own. By reconstructing the theoretical framework of transmedial narration, this book enables the inclusion of all kinds of communicative media forms on their own terms. This book is divided into three parts. Part I presents established and newly developed concepts that are vital for formulating a nuanced theoretical model of transmedial narration. Part II investigates the specific transmedial media characteristics that are most central for realizing narratives in a plenitude of different media types. Finally, Part III contains brief studies in which the narrative potentials of painting, instrumental music, mathematical equations, and guided tours are illuminated with the aid of the theoretical framework developed throughout the book. Suitable for advanced students and scholars, this book provides tools to disentangle the narrative potential of any form of communication.
